Helicopter Power Line Work

The title and narration pretty much says it all. We were driving across the desert and spotted some helicopter activity near some power lines. We found a road that took us right to the action. (BTW, This is the kind of thing you can see when you shut off the TV/video game/Internet and get out a little.)
I found this work fascinating and I think that if I were alone I would have captured hours of footage. But I think this taste from two angles is more than enough.
Anyone know what those line guys make? I sure hope it's a lot!
I do know the name of the company performing this work, but have decided not to release it. Why? Well although I'm sure they were following all safety precautions and their pilots were properly trained for the work -- you don't get a job like this by being a fly-by-night operator -- there's always ONE viewer who finds something to complain about and I'm not going to help them cause trouble for these folks. Can't you just sit back, watch, and be amazed at the things we can do?
Comments? Leave them below. I hope you enjoyed this; I'll try to release other new content soon.

Must be a pretty powerful helicopter to carry the weight of all of those brass balls! Nice video, thanks for posting.

I watched a Skycrane move tower sections into the hills here in Oregon once. Nothing but admiration for the pilots and crews.

Maria thanks for sharing. Great video. Looks like the company I worked for back in 2010-2011 until the contract was finished. I was a fuel tech and did get some flight time doing inspections as I'm also a helicopter CFI. I won't say the name as no need to. Great company with an excellent safety record though. The glass insulators are being replaced with ceramic insulators. Glass just breaks when shot with a gun but ceramic splinters and still allows for insulating. The flying done with the lineman on the end of the long line is called short-hauling or dope-on-a-rope. I know many 20,000+ hour pilots that refuse to fly the short-haul as it's too much of a liability (many states and power companies do not allow it) also they do not want the death of any lineman they "punched off" released off the line because of an emergency on their conscious. As far as pay goes, the line-man make $110,000-$350,000 depending on a lot of factors. The pilots make $95,000-$150,000 on a rotating schedule 2-3 weeks on shift 1-2 weeks off shift. Thanks again Maria

I'd say that pay scale would be about what it takes to find the people not only willing, but have the required skill, and temperament to do that job and get everyone home alive at the end of the day.

Amazing, whatever they are paying for the helicopter, it is worth it. The amount of time they are saving the workers is more than worth it.

Pretty kewl stuff. I remember years ago watching a guy sitting on a platform on the side of a helicopter doing service on some high power line. He wasn’t being dropped off like these guys, the helicopter would just hover as he did his work from the platform. I think it was mostly inspection work he was doing. Still some incredible flying that I have seen in that video and this one. Hope you are doing well!

Cheers for that Maria. Our local electricity network is now using helicopters to carry out infrared inspection of pylons so it will be interesting to see if they use them to do the repairs too in the summer.

Man, I would love to do that job. Being a cargo/slingload/longline guy, this type of work is very fulfilling and requires serious concentration. That "dope on a rope" stuff is pretty scary, though!

Yes that kind of flying requires the outmost in concentration but I have confidence you could do that with a little practice. I have seen it where the helicopter hovers right along side the power line and the guy does his work.

Thanks for sharing another good one. You're a great pilot and it's nice to see that you share pride watching others do your type of work. Were you able to see if they had a second person as spotter or was that the pilot hovering eyes down?

Seems the Hughes variant of helicopters is used most often with power line work. Any particular reason or opinion why?

Trustin' the turbine...the 2 guys on the long line better hope the engine doesn't shell out and the pilot has to punch them off as he autos... :-0 I have never seen men at the end of a long line; bet THEIR insurance is frightful.
