Helicopter Pilot Jobs Tree Sawing In The MD Helicopters MD 500. From Kenny Keller Creator Of Helicopter Online Ground School and Author of the Amazon Best Seller Helicopter Check Ride. Hello I'm Kenny Keller, the creator of Helicopter Online Ground School and author of the book, Helicopter Check Ride. I had the privilege to go see one of my former students that started out with me over ten years ago, as a new kid right out of high school. Now he's a helicopter tree saw pilot. I spent two days watching him and his partner work the operation, the helicopter tree sawing and it was absolutely amazing. These guys work awesome together as a team. They work a crazy schedule, twenty-eight days, twenty-eight days off. They work really hard while they are away from their families and then they get a break and get to go home for twenty-eight days.
This is an absolute amazing helicopter pilot job. I've been in and around helicopters for twenty years and I was completely and entirely amazed by this operation. The tree saw hangs below the helicopter from a aluminium tube. The tube basically just is a carry mount for the saw. The saw itself has a gas motor that drives the saws with a belt.
The pilot operates the saw from inside the helicopter. He can start the unit, get the blade spinning and get them up to RPM. He can also turn the saw in relation to the helicopter depending on how he's cutting.
The skill to fly this helicopter and manage the saw and stay safe and clear of the power lines, keep track of everything going on on the ground and make sure that you're not going to cause any damage to persons or property on the ground, it's just simply an amazing feat.

Jed does Helicopter Tree Sawing of all things. Trimming Trees along power transmission lines. I never even heard of that until he told me that was what he was doing. I have been impressed ever since. That’s a cool Helicopter Pilot Job! So I look down on the post, I see where I told him how proud I was of him. Then I read his reply to me. He says he is more proud of me for being his teacher! I don’t know how many people can really relate to how this made me feel. I sat back in my chair and just looked at the photo. I am thinking about everything I just posted here and then some. I am thinking about everything that I do.I am thinking about all the hardships, all the sacrifice I have made, the Helicopter Accident that I survived by absolute luck, I am thinking about everything! Helicopter Pilot Jobs. For me, sitting here, knowing that I get even partial credit taking Jed from day one, to the point that he is in in his life now. Is truly one of the most overwhelming feeling I have ever had. I am so very very very proud of Jed. This is only the tip of the iceberg of what I am feeling. I can not remember sitting down and completely writing from the gut without ever even looking back at the screen or trying to figure out what I am going to say next! Jed has an Amazing Helicopter Pilot Job!

Can you imagine the meeting with the insurance company? We are going to rig up a bunch of saw blades, power them with a gas motor, put them on the end of a long flexabile pipe and hang that from a helicopter. We want to use it around high voltage lines.

About 5 years ago, I was out for a walk, and was watching a heli fly back and forth across a mountain range on the other side of town. He appeared to be flying around with a log hanging from his whirlybird. I could not imagine what in the hell he was doing. Now I realize that it wasn't a log at all.. He was trimming the trees along the high tension lines up there! You learn something new every day!

Im not a pilot, but i used to dream of getting a UH-1H, and take a saw mill into one of those cheap land locked properties, that are sold by the old growth timber industry for Pennies on the dollar, without the necessary right of way in. As a kid this was my way of cheating the system, at the highest cost possible I guess. But hey maybe the Huey would be a write off, lol

It isn't close enough for any induced current from the power lines to have any effect. And there isn't any RF (Radio Frequency) in play with this activity. The power lines are not transmission antennas. It's only 60 Hz AC in the wires (or in some cases just DC). Have you seen how they wash or inspect those power lines from a helicopter? Those videos are cool also. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9YmFHAFYwmY.html

One of my favorite helicopters ever! The Hughes 500, formerly, then, McDonald Douglas aviation company took over, and is now the M.D.-500!👍🇺🇸 With it's "rigid rotor-head", and high rotor rpms!, This is the "flying sports car", of small helicopters! A great performer, since the military version of it in 60's. The Allison C-18, and later C-20b turbine engine s were small enough to fit in a car! Made between, 250-450 shaft horsepower, depending on the year-generation and model. Very reliable!!

I agree, this makes no sense to me. It's an accident looking for places to happen and mechanically, there are hundreds of maintenance points that need attention hourly. Can't they bury the wires or put them in a 'pipeline', something closer to the ground that would halve this maintenance ordeal? They still have to clean up all the twigs, this is about forest fires and property liability. This is why a 'decentralized' grid is so important. Main transmission lines (this is a small one) should be limited by distributed power generation from renewables. Get rid of the power lines, let the forests grow naturally.

KellyAnn please believe me when I say this is much safer than sending people on foot up the sides of these mountains with all their gear to trim these trees, they would then be littered with death and injury, it's necessary, there would be power black-outs every time the wind got up. We should be thankful there's people willing and able to do this.

Dear investor...I going to start a business flying an unstable vehicle with a set of dangling high speed carbon tipped rotating saw blades on the end of a long metal bar near some high voltage power lines in restricted airspace and swing it through some inaccessible trees on the top of a mountain. We will only have one pilot because the skill level is so high that no-one can train for the job. Oh, and I can't get insurance because it so unique that there is no amortization table available for risk assesment. .... GO FOR IT ... someone has to be first.

roy hoco especially on high-tension lines when the phase is stacked vertically like it is one on top of the other. each line set it's a 3-phase at 60 hertz each one is a third off of the other one as far as the standing wave is concerned so touching the one next to the other one they are at the same phase you're just going to complete the circuit with no problem. but if you touch two on the same side together Bang! you'll short 240 kilovolts. as each of the three phases are stacked one on top of the other with the parallel to each on each side

Whatever they are paid, it's simply not enough. When I think of all the people that it takes to keep our lights on and all of our machine machining and all that had to happen to keep the tricity-juice flowing through tron-pipes, well helicoopter pilots were not one of the jobs on my list. Then, a couple years ago I watched several YT videos where helicopters were used to bring workers up to the towers supporting high-tension lines (i.e. the big stuff). Just like these chainsaw pilots, it required pilots of extraordinary proficiency. Hats off to the people who do these jobs well. Can you imagine telling someone who inquires about what you do for a living, "I pilot a giant flying chain saw in close proximity to very high voltage power lines and the towers that support them. So what fo you do?" "Me? Oh nothing important."

I had a few hundred hours in a D model back in the mid 80's and your video brought back some great memories, some long lining, but no tree sawing! I remember on my check ride being disappointed with the school bus performance after hearing so much about the "Porsche" of helicopters. It turns out, after the flight I went to tighten the frictions and they were already tight, I never backed them off before the flight. No wonder it flew like our FH1100! Great Video.

That was a real joy to watch for several reasons. One of which, this video provides an explanation for an observation I made while geocaching near power lines. I didn't think it would be cost effective to prune branches of trees 70+ feet off the ground. My presumption is likely accurate. Using this special saw suspended from a helicopter is brilliant! I immediately tossed out a "like". Color me an immediate subscriber too.
