Sinking into the duff is always an issue with these chairs. I 3d printed some new feet for mine and have also used the tennis ball mod in the past with success on my Chair One. Considering the upgrade to the Zero for trips when every oz matters. My Chair One has been bombproof after a few seasons of heavy use. Very robust kit. Thanks for the review!
Great video! I just bought one of these and I love it! I cut a piece of Tyvek a little wider and longer than the length and width of the legs to solve the sinking problem. At a cost of about 3 oz, it is worth it to me.
Have one of these and love it. Weigh 225 and so far so good. You do need a hard surface so the legs don't go into the ground. Also fits really well under a tarp. Nice review, Al
I just happened across this again today. I watched it about 2 days after you published it. I think this is so classic and absolutely hilarious ... perhaps one of your BEST works ... cuz it surprised even you!! Loved watching it today and got another good laugh! Never forgot the lesson. When I use mine, I put the legs on one of the window visor reflectics pads ... it spreads out the weight from each leg, so they never sink into the ground! It's called "fail forward" ...🤣🤣🤣. Hope 2020 has started well for you!
Love how you made the most out of that blooper moment. Great unplanned lesson for those considering chair like this. I have the same problem with looser ground surfaces with the little ground chair I made.
Well, looks like your video is a few years old. Are you still using the Helinox Chair Zero? We're looking into purchasing it and have a question no one has clearly answered yet. When sitting in the chair with our legs out it feels sturdy. But, when we bring our legs in, knees bent, it seems the weight shifts to the back legs and it feels as if the chair has all the weight on the rear legs to the point it rocks back a little. Would you say the rear legs could handle the weight, or a majority of it?
We love our Helinox chairs but we haven't been able to take them backpacking yet because we never seem to have enough room in our packs after we've got all our other essential food and gear loaded in. So we tend to use them for day hikes and festivals, etc. But we agree, having that little extra piece of comfort while camping is super nice.
I know they make a "hammock" that attaches to the bottom of those 4 legs, for use on softer ground. I usually have my zseat with me, and will set my chair on that when the ground is super soft. Works really well.
I've been thinking about getting one of these for the same reason you did....this vid came at the perfect time. Thanks for the first look Adam. Will it fit down into the arc haul side pocket ok?
Great review! I like that you appreciated your wife that she got you the chair ;-) I also like that you were able to compare with a Nalgene bottle just to get the idea of the diameter and size.
I think with a 19-20oz backpack you can afford to carry the weight of the chair👍 Been thinking about picking up a lightweight chair or stool for when I take my tent rather then the Hammock. I hate not having a good place to sit! Haha when you sat in it I thought you broke it lol! Good review my friend 👍
Thanks buddy! I will be sitting in luxury... stones and logs are fine but this chair is super comfy! Thought I snapped the legs at first too! Sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach... all I could do is laugh!
Someone else had a review, he always brought 4 tennis balls to stick on the bottom of the feet, if you have room it's a good idea, worked great on any terrain
That is a great idea!!! Gotta say though... after the one time in mud, I've been pretty lucky with this chair... sure it will sink a bit in soft dirt over time but not a big deal... all in all, its so nice to have that back support after a long days hike!!!
Funny... was just talking to my buddy on my last trip... we stealthed camped and had to find a log for him to sit on while making a fire pit... he is almost convinced to buy one... when the wind shifted, I just picked up the chair and moved it away from the smoke.. he couldn't do that sitting on the log... it was a 20' tree! 😂 Still loving this chair!!!
Yep, the sand cover is the ticket at 10 bucks & 5 ounces. Cut two poles 4 foot long, lean against a tree, put chair in the middle and now you have handrails to get in and out.
Hi Restless! I just discovered your channel via Frozen. I’m debating whether or not to take this chair on my AT thru hike. I’m 52, and I’d prefer not to sit on the ground all of the time. Is this worth the added weight? Thanks so much, digging your videos.
Hey Lula!!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!! That's a great question! On an AT through hike, I would definitely NOT bring a chair!!! I truly believe that on a through hike like that, ounces and pounds really impact how successful a person will be completing a hike of that magnitude... the 1 pound this chair weighs could be equivalent to 2 days of food you could be carrying instead, or water for that fact... a chair is great to bring on an overnight or even a weekend trip... but on the AT, you will be better suited to carry a lightweight sit pad instead... remember, there are plenty of shelters available to sit down and relax where you can lean up against a wall, or sit on picnic bench and so on... I just believe after watching many people attempting the AT, many send items home to conserve weight and I truly believe a chair would be something you just end up sending back after a week...🤣! I hope that help's!!! That is awesome that you have the opportunity to accomplish such a journey!!! So jealous!!!!
Thanks Whiskeyfox!!! Its the Sony A6000 with their Sony Wireless Microphone accessory! Because the A6000 does not have a mic input, you have to buy their hot shoe attachments! The A6300 has the mic input though!
OMG. I am about to pull the trigger on a A6500, and then I saw your footage and I was like, whoa - that looks amazing, I better check to see what he has before I do anything...
Dude... the A6500 is BAD ASS.... BUT!!!!! If I had to do it again, go with the A6300 and save your dough and buy the Sigma 16mm F1.4 lense!!!! Check it out on my latest videos... the Ohio Group Hike showcases that lense.... it AMAZING!!!!! Also, if you don't plan on doing much 4K uploading (which takes forever!!!) Just go with the A6000... but, the ability to shoot in 120 fps is sick on the A6300!!!
What picture profile do you use? it really looks very good. I'm liking the IBIS stabilization on the A6500, along with the overheating switch and bigger grip.
I use both Nuetral and Vivid.... depending on what I'm shooting... as far as overheating issues... all the Sony's are prone to that... To solve both over heating and bigger grip... I installed the Smallrig Cage mount with wood grip! I have pictures on my Instagram.... none the less... whichever Sony you choose, you will not be disappointed!!!! But make sure you check out that 16mm Sigma lense... it fricken AMAZING!!!!!
Not sure why I haven’t gotten around to watching this video. Glad you kept the blooper in there but that’s your style. And what was with the little motion you were doing at 7:59? Looking like you were trying to tuck your hair behind your ears lol!
@@dukesilvergold no, I'm talking about the new Flexlite Air, not the regular flexlite. I have both and can assure you they weigh the same exactly. I've done just that.
Put TENNIS BALLS with a small hole in them over each foot to stop them sinking. In fact you can buy small kids tennis balls on eBay - fairly light weight. You can also get a Helinox ground sheet which holds the corners and stops the chair sinking into sand.
Awesome hacks Chesteruk!!! I'm happy to report that since the making of this video, I've used this chair on every trip and so far, It' s never sank in the ground!!! But yes, that ground sheet or tennis balls would definitely fix that from happening again!!! Thanks for watching!!!
RESTLESS OUTDOORS I took mine cycle touring. It sank into soft ground and I didn’t realise when I pulled it out I’d lost one of the plastic feet off the chair. Got some spares coming from China. That’s how I came across the tennis ball thing which I now use. Thanks for the reply.
Nice one brother! Lol I know all too well about the bog sink. I'm looking at the upper end of double your weight! Thank goodness I've taken to biking and hiking to change that, but for now....that chair is out of range for me. We'll see what the future brings. Lol Be well bro Craig
@Forestwalker111 , check out the "Chair One" model. 320lb capacity, but probably could take 350/360 if you don't plop yourself down hard. There's always margins figured into the weight ratings. The Chair One has a 1.9lb pack weight.
That's too bad!!! I tend to slouch when I sit and kick my feet out...so I'm never really sitting upright anyways... hey its good to know this chair may not be comfortable to everyone!!!! Thanks for the feedback!!! It helps the community!!!
Was looking at these and liked this review alot..im getting an REI gift card so I think I'll get one...i like camping and hiking the same ..some folks are one sided..there both super fun..thanks man
Thank you Brett!!! I have taken this chair on all my hikes (you can always see it in the backgrounds at our camps!!!!) I thouroghly enjoy it after a long hike and is definitely worth carrying the extra 1 pound!!!! Merry Christmas!!!!
Setup @ 3:19 I've been disappointed by trying to find chairs with as good a quality build as the helinox (amzn.to/2tW4Y6I) until I found Moon Lence (amzn.to/2KPJfnj). For a trade in of a couple ounces you get something just as durable. Either way, I love both chairs, I just wish the Helinox was a bit cheaper.
I hear you! Although someone recently had a sale on the Helinox Chair Zero... was $89.99!!! Thought it was Backcountry.com... but that was a few weeks ago! Sounds like the Moon Lence is another good option too!
If you played a drinking game where you took a shot every time "uuh" was said, you would have consumed enough alcohol to kill 73% of Manhattan. I took the time to count and got 136 times. Averaged out, there is an "uhh" every 3.86 seconds. Good review though.
Uhh...hey Tyler...uhh...I uhh really appreciate uhh you taking uhh the time to uhhhhhhh count how uhh many "uhh's" were uhhhhh in the uhh video. Uhhhh, I uhhh am flatt...uhhh...tered that uhhh you would uhhhhh take the uhhh time out of uhhhhhhhhh your uhhhhh day to uhhhh count! Do uhhhh me uhhhh favor uhhh and watch uhh all uhhh of my uhhh videos uhhh and uhhh report uhhhhhh back uhh to uhh me and uhhh let uhh me know uhhhh how uhhh many uhh "uhh's" I uhhh actually uhhh say! I uhhh would uhhh be uhhh inter-uhhh-est-uhhhhhhhhh-ed in uhhhh what uhhh that uhhhh number would uhhhh be!
