Even Neville from N-drive productions, who’s taken over Backwoods miniatures, Parkeside Dundas, yourselves, gaugemaster, etc asked me.. how on earth did you manage to fix the little Heljan Manning-Wardles? I thought Heljan re-called all the chassis. Can’t get parts. Ahh..those tiny flycranks, tiny pins.. make your own! It’s an art! And turn the flanges down on a lathe, about 5 thou. Re-quarter them.. ream out the rods with a jeweller’s reamer..and they work like a dream..😳😜👍🚂🚂Llandaft.
Now THAT'S a waddle; to me though, i think it's a good thing, it gives it a lot more personality in my opinion-- even if it didn't happen in real life. (Great overview by the way.)
Hi will these locomotives take a standard curve from the peco starter pack ? ,my curve is 4 standard curves put together but they just won't take the curve, am I doing something wrong.

The Heljan issue is this.. I’m looking at Lew and Taw. If those can’t fit round a 3’ rad, then Lyn certainly can’t. Backwoods miniatures boi. They had to have their front and rear bogies altered. All the chassis were re-called. The other issue is the flanges were too deep. Failed on Peco points. The contact left the track. Until Peco sorts out the points, it will never work. I’d love to try one. Maybe, as in the real thing, the 2-4-2 chassis might work, a-la-Desmond and 0-4-0 hunslets, but unless the pony and trailing truck can swing free, to cope. And are wheighted down, not sideways, unless it’s a mill-pond.. I suspect de-railments. 009 is not flat. Think Landrover on a muddy field.

The issue is 009 represents roughly 2ft narrow gauge and the Tralee and Dingle is 3ft. TT gauge track is fairly close to 3ft in 4mm scale though so models wouldn't be to hard to make with the right skills.
I actually spoke to one of the volunteers at the L&B when they announced they would build two new Manning Wardles and he mentioned that they has recently gotten some info that suggests Lew was snapped. However, this was in passing and he didn't elaborate any further.
The couplings supplied by Peco. Toy trains. Rubbish. The way to overcome this, without ruining the look of the locomotive and attacking the cow-catchers, with xeuron track cutters is to fit Greenwich couplings. Wide enough loop to cope with the bogie swing. Send them to me, instead of re-call. The other problem is: the front bogie needs to be able to cope with a gradient. Hills? Narrow gauge? Therefore not a flat baseboard. The cow-catcher shorts the rails. File it down a bit. Tilt it up slightly. And the screw on the front is: 1.5 mil by 6 mil long. To achieve the gradient, it needs to be able to tilt forwards to aft, rather than lift the entire body. Too tight. Not just causing de-railments, but.. unless it’s a millpond railway, the front and back bogies lift all 6 driving wheels clear of the track. No electrical contact.
Mine won't negotiate PECO points. Seeing as it was "developed in conjunction with PECO" this is totally unacceptable. Nice looking model that runs perfectly on straight track, but stop dead when it reaches points. Expensive ornament. I'll never buy another Heljan loco.
These locos have poor pulling power up gradients, Heljan customer services are also poor, had issues with the middle 3 pickups, so returned the loco to Heljan, they do not do repairs, they replace them, however they didn’t have my model in stock and had to select another, the another arrived and two detail parts were missing, 2 months later and I’m still waiting for a steam valve, pathetic.
