Screw subtlety, the French go full-on poetic and sinister. God, I love it.

I distinctly remember in French class in high school we all got to choose a Disney song, find it's French counterpart, and present it in class. One of my classmates chose this.

OMG, the guy did 3:46-3:58 in ONE BREATH. As a singer, I'll tell you that takes a LOT of practice and skill.

That kind of making me laugh because Frollo's french voice actor is the same as Scar's. So it is easy to simply imagine Scar instead XD

And I thought Frollo couldn’t be more twisted and terrifying.

"Be mine or my passion will send you to Hell!" Wow...

Guard 1: **sigh** Who's he singing about this time? Guard 2: That gypsy chick Esmeralda. He's more lustful than last time, he's even talking to the fire Guard 1: Well this is going to be hard to tell him Guard 2: What? Guard 1: The gypsy's escaped the cathedral Guard 2: Oh great... Guard 1: Do you wanna tell him? Guard 2: No bloody way! I'm not talking to him while he's in this state! Guard 1: Fine.. Guard 1 **go's inside the room, after a few seconds he comes back out again** Guard 2: We burning down Paris again? Guard 1: Yep Guard 2: So bloody predictable ¬_¬

"Judge Frollo, the..." "Get out of here! I'm singing!"

It sounds even more evil in this version!

“Is it my fault?” Asking for pity instead of declaring innocence, ooooh

This is really skilled translation work. It hits the Catholic guilt and nuance of the thing perfectly, which many/most of the translations miss, while still fitting the melody almost 100%. Top marks.

In french version the man who gave his voice at frollo is the same man who gave voice to Scar in the lion king and Gandhalf in the Lord of the ring/the hobbit.

I like this Frollo more than the English Frollo. Whereas English Frollo is oblivious to his own evil, this version knows that he's wrong, but will blame everyone but himself first. Also, he thinks that murder will free him from Esmerelda's "temptations". He went from a maniac to a self-congratulatory murderous lunatic, and I love it.

I don't speak any French, at all, but wow, the lyrics are way more powerful than the English version. It's so cool listening to Hellfire in Frollo's native language :D but his English voice sounds more powerful.

the cool thing is that how the history is in Paris, the french is perfect in context..!!!

As someone who's been studying French for four years, being able to understand this makes it so worth it.

The French version is so much better than the English... I think it's because we had to translate it, so we put additional effort on it, and maybe it's also because of a cultural French relationship we have with poetry. And this is the case for almost all Disney's songs.

Here's the literal translation from a french speaker: "Beata Maria, I claim that my soul is pure, of my virtue I have the right to be proud. Beata maria, my heart has much more rightness, then a common, vulgar crowd of misery draggers. But why, Maria, when she dances, the insolent, her eyes of fire set me aflame and haunt me. What burn, what torture, the flames of her mane devour my body of obscene wilting. Infernal, bacchanal. Hell blackens my flesh, of the sin, of desire, the sky must punish me. Is it my fault? Why this blame? It's this gipsy witch by who my heart inflames! Is it my fault? If our father. Made men less powerful then lucifer? (Second part is pretty spot on)

The french version is most powerfull than the english one.

In this version Frollo sounds more old... It's pretty interesting to hear.

"Lord Frollo, are you seeing things in the fireplace again?"

"Make her offer herself to me, or she will burn!" That sounds more like Frollo.

His diction and emotion are amazing. It's very internalized, he doesn't overdramatize his lines, but so powerful!

This makes me unbelievably more uncomfortable than the English version tbh Like, wow! Those lyrics! Loved every second of it

Hunchback has one of the best soundtracks of the Disney animations. And the French version definitely makes it sound darker than the English. The lyrics are perfect!

I love this version so much... the French is so poetic and I love it! I feel like Frollo not sounding as evil and mean makes it better.

This is interesting since it's the setting language, but I really don't feel many other singers could beat how villainous and powerful Tony Jay made this song. It's been incredibly hard to find a version that outshines him in that crucial aspect.

I love Jean Piat! He is good as Frollo but amazing as Gandalf!

For me, the whole "which is best" argument comes down to that final shout of a single word: The amount of emotion packed into that one word can sometimes make one version infinitely superior to another. For me, it's a tie between this one and the Russian one.

It was really bold of disney to have Frollo sing this song.. in a few words he confess that he wants to sleep with her by making her ,his. This song is a masterpiece and Frollo is one of the best charecters .he was tortured by his passion and was driven to madness in the end

I like this, but with the English version I can hear/sense more of his twisted and dark, yet fiery psyche expressed

This voice is calm even during the high notes. Makes it all the more creepier.

As other said, Frollo is really the archdeacon in the book and he's not at first that evil (in the opposite of Phoebus who is really a jerk). He's a learned man and takes care of his young brother Jehan. He takes Quasimodo under his tutelage when the women in Notre-Dame took him for a demon. He taught him to read and write (something not everybody was able to do in that time).

Fun fact, I attempted this song as part of an assignment for my second beginner French class in college. I do not recommend it. I almost lost my voice.

À bien y écouter, la version française s'est plus attachée à la forme littérale, moins de libertés sont prises vis à vis de la structure d'origine. Le débat Québec vs. France est sans fin, chacun préfèrera la version de son pays car elle répond d'avantage aux schémas de sa propre culture.
