Still the best start zone of any WoW expansion. The sheer size and "awe" you felt when looking upon this expansive, blasted wasteland forged from decades of war and slaughter. A huge, imposing road of bones and skulls lead to a citadel forged with hate, and the sky resembled nothing else you have seen. Upon stepping outside your factions base camp you'd see a battle-line drawn by the Horde and Alliance in the distance, scattered across it would be numerous skirmishes between players of both sides, and we all had to watch out for a huge mechanical monster wandering the wastes, heralded by it's now iconic BRAUUUUOOOO. Every starting zone afterwards felt like it was deliberately separating the playerbase from each other.
+DeKorkadeBarnen You didn't play back in the day did you ? Flying mount was only accessible at lvl 70, and many people didn't even have the classic epic ground mount. And every body was OK with that ...
My roommate and I just talking about, what the hell is it about Outlands that makes me so nostalgic. Your description, and this music, that's what. Gods, what a place, what a game.
5:48 This was the ambient music that was playing as I would just stop, look around, take in all of the sights, that huge planet in the sky...This place had some killer atmosphere and world-building.
The shitty thing about these games is that the wonder fades and eventually every part of the game is experienced by others, analyzed, broken down, posted about on RU-vid, podcasted about, and turned into a blob of facts and stats. It will always be that way. The only way to avoid it is for the game creators to try to consistently create new mystery, which is extremely difficult.
Agreed. The rise of WoW channels on RU-vid has really crushed the wonder from the game, _especially_ when they talk about their first impressions and ultimately drive the hype train too far. It's inevitable. Fortunately, you can stop watching. Stop reading. Just play the game brand-new. You'll experience wonder.
Nothing compares to stepping through the dark portal, its so immersing its like actually being there, cant take in the epicness of stepping into a broken wasteland populated by huge demons and beasts, so epic..
I don't play WoW anymore, but one of my fondest memories was stepping through The Dark Portal and hearing this music, looking on in awe at the demons and allies fighting it out, then looking towards the ruin world and it's sky. I was apart of somthing bigger than myself and it felt great.
I miss how blizzard actually tried to encourage world pvp by making everyone quest near the opposite factions base. The aesthetic and feel of the zone is FREAKING PERFECT. Shame that other than that the questing wasn't amazing...
The questing was... all right. Fine. Some memorable stuff, especially at the beginning (Like shutting down the Legion portals? Bombing all those elite skull-level mobs the Abyssal Shelf? Amazing!), but after that, I couldn't wait to move on to Zangarmarsh. Now *that* was a fun zone!
I hate PvP and i avoid doing it as much as possible (why i choose PvE server) PvP is not the reason i picked up this game. It might as well not exist to me, i choose to play to experience the story and see what is coming next. Not to get harassed by griefer who think PvP is wasting people time by repeatedly corpse/graveyard camping.
Man entering outland for the first time and to be greeted to this other worldly atmosphere and music is still fresh after all these years. it was such a shift in comparison to what we have experienced before...exciting yet scary. It was a shame the other expansions didn't give off the same vibes as this expansion did!
Just when you thought the journey through WoW couldn't get any better, and then this amazing new world with a jaw dropping background and a legion of demons attacking at your first step, it was a whole new experience that I'll never forget.
The two most epic times for me where; -Stepping through the Dark Portal into Outland for the first time -Taking the boat through the Howling Fjord in to Northrend for the first time.. Damnit Blizz, why can't you capture that same wonder and awe we felt any more? We don't need any pointless, over-the-top cinematics, we just need an amazing site to capture our imaginations from the off.
I love how this starts off with wonder, and awe...you're stepping through a portal to something never before seen, something of.... terrifying horror. When main theme of hellfire kicks off at 00:30 and you're greeted by an army of demons barely 100 yards from the portal you just walked through, it was an unforgettable experience. I remember, all these years later, my jaw dropping and thinking to myself "what the f do I do now?" Huge groups of confused and scared players trying to figure out if they were supposed to make a break for it past the demons or search for something closer. What a great opening experience.
Oh, the memories. Two steps into Outland, this music starts in the background while both Alliance and Horde soldiers are desperatly tryng to keep the Burning Legion demons from pushing through and getting into Azeroth, while their friggin tall-as-a-mountain commander (i think it was a pit lord?) looks on at the carnage... Welcome to Outland, YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!
Favorite zone in wow. Sadly I didn't get to experience it during og tbc because I was still a baby, but stepping through the dark portal into such an alien wasteland during classic is still a feeling I'll never forget.
The memories of entering Hellfire Peninsula during the opening. Seeing the waves of allies going to the left and hordies to the right with this music in the background.
Entering Outland was great! I remember walking through the path towards the Dark Portal, anticipating what would lie on the other side, only to find this mystical, mysterious music. The zone was like nothing I had ever seen before, and I fell in love with it right then and there. The visuals and scenery in particular were breathtaking. Outland was by far my favorite journey through WoW, and as I approach 58 on my new warrior, the anticipation to once again enter Hellfire is going through me.
When my guild finally downed Illidan I think I may have had a legit nergasm. You don't get just jaw dropping, "holy shit dude" moments like you did in TBC anymore. Stepping through that portal gave an amazing feeling, it's hard to describe
Listening to WoW songs from vanilla to wotlk makes me drop tears. I have such good memories with the friends I made online and all the time we used to spend playing together, supporting each other, being a team, defending each other from gankers, always going together to dungeons or raids. Definitly best times of my gaming history.
Its really awesome how the music from here was partly inspired by "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd (also the innkeeper of Thrallmar, of course)
The first time I ever entered Outland, a bit after the start of WotLK, someone was agrgroing Kazzak a lot. So I quested with Kazzak yelling his lines. I really felt like I was fighting an IMMEDIATE danger in the quests, an IMMEDIATE problem, and that Kazzak was proof of that. It was awesome.
Might be a bit strange, but facing impossible to defeat demons literally out of the gate was amazing. Not only were they reinforcing that no, you can't just beat the legion and demonic forces are serious business, but connected me with when I've started the game. Some of you might remember, but the Open Beta event for the original release ended with the devs spawning a large amount of elite demons and players having a world's end party. At that time I was exploring the "evade" mechanic as I was shooting at an infernal from the water. Of course I made sure to defeat some later in the Scar where Mannoroth perished, but facing a pit lord and his army brought that impossible odds feeling back.
They made us WoW Classic servers, but we'll never have an authentic Burning Crusade experience ever again. Remember being told that the dark portal is once again open. Having those goosebumps before crossing it, only to find this huge oversized and completely torn apart war zone. I'll never forget that.
If you listen closely you can apparently hear a few bars from Pink Floyd's 'Shine on you crazy diamond'. Also, the horde in keeper here is named 'Floyd Pinkus'.
My most awe-inspiring moment in all of WoW, and likely all of gaming, was when I first crossed the dark portal on my Orc Warrior into hellfire peninsula. Seeing Skull-level Demons running straight at me as the first thing when I loaded in scared me shitless and let me know that this was the real-deal from here on out. The redness, the skybox, the atmosphere and the music. A bit into leveling, and I see a "fel reaver" in the distance. I think to myself, "oh, its just a visual mob like those demons at the portal meant to scare me!". 5 minutes later, as Im smacking bleeding hollow orcs in the face, collecting wood and iron scraps, fel reaver stomps on my head and promptly kills me. Damn near shit my 12 year old self.
Players are not getting bored! They failed to recreate the Legendary experience of WoW by making the game into a main stream stale experience where Players get whatever they ask for instead of getting a game that took 6-12 months to just gear up their character. NOW THAT WAS AN EPIC experience. Tell me if I am wrong. There was something to look forward to.
I must say, Outland truly felt ''Alien''. It's another world, the world our ancestors went to in order to fight unimaginable horrors and secure peace for Azeroth. Crossing the gate is experiencing what they felt as they made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of their peoples : men, dwarves and elves. Plagued by the Burning Legion, ruled by Illidan, ravaged by enraged elements, derelict like a floating carcass...Outland truly is a sight and an experience to behold.
On Frostmane server on launch day back in 2007, the big questions were what level the fel reavers were, what they drop, and what it would take to destroy one.
What's great about this is all the little subtleties that add so much to the overall atmosphere and mood. One of my favorites is what's almost like a low rolling mumble or whimper after the twang at 1:28; a Titan's lament. He weeps in the far distance, helpless, crying that some god may hear his plea and restore his broken world. But there is no answer. His moans serve as a chilling backdrop to the warrior that's just stepped through the portal. The Titans have failed. Our gods are dead. But, no matter. We will succeed where they have failed. Bring on the Legion. We shall not falter.
Nagrand and Zangar...also masterpieces! The times where the creators of this game knows how to sacrifice in the altar of making the game. They created something that we listen now....
after reading some of the comments here its pretty evident that this music track is nostalgic for all of us. i remember how crowded HH was and all of the traffic of people arriving and leaving for questing. i spent the first few minutes tracking down people i knew nearby and saying hey.
Getting stepped on by the Fel Reaver !!! 😩 I didn't realize their was two, until I was level 70. And had a flying mount. I remember kiting him to Shatt w ice lance on my blood elf Mage 😂 those guards in Shatt don't play lmao
beautiful ambient track. the moment i stepped through that gate was one of the best moments of gaming in my life. no game's captured that awesome feeling since.
I remember my first journey to Outlands. I was 58, I was wondering around Plaguelands. Someome from my guild told me go to Outlands. I wanted to complete my quests in Plaguelands but... but... when I walked through a portal, when I saw Outlands... when I heard this music... when I think about WoW this is one of the pictures I;ve got in my head.
When I looked up into the sky it blew my mind. I had this epic music playing and looking up into space I saw close planets. Its just unreal the amount of detail that went into this zone.
Exactly the same here. When I have seen the great portal in Blasted Lands, I was like "Wow, that's epic". Then I stepped through it and I was nearly blown away by what I've seen. The beautiful sky with those speheres and the Twisting Nether and below me, the Alliance and Horde fighting with a raiding mass of elite demons. And just then I saw the portal behind me...much bigger and much more epic than that in Azeroth. Rest in peace, epic World of Warcraft :(
thank you! I thought I was alone that feel that way, every person I know HAVE to play as soon as they can to any game they want to play, be it demo, beta, whatever things are so much more enjoyable after you wait for it, after you CRAVE for it than having it right away
God damn memories .. Don't think anyone who played for the first time in Hellfire avoided dying from Fel Reaver. It was funny as I had just landed in hellfire and someone from guild said "Just watch out for Fel Reaver". I was killing the creeps for first quest and heard a loud noise and died and later on saw that giant walking over my corpse. Replied in guild "WTF was that" and the guy said "Hahaha .. welcome to Hellfire".
At 2:25, is when I actually start liking it. I honestly don't know why, but TBC is probably my favorite expansion. There's just something amazing about it, and I just can't quite put my finger on it.
i'm first to admit i'm not an oldschool gamer by any means cause i started playing wow during wrath actually started february of 2010, but i'm the type of gamer who got totally sucked into the feeling of vanilla and the burning crusade. by the time my druid finally made it to outland my first thought was a giant caverns of time lol i was new. then once i got the feel for flying, advancing alchemy, discovering flasks, the feel of the sky etc etc i never EVER wanted to leave outland. wrath = bore
i still feel the same feeling i got the first time passing through the dark portal! the outlands is outsanding! theres this something about it that made me go wow and still does lol! i honestly didnt get the excitement feeling from starting wotlk as i did from bc ! i miss the old days! i dont regret spending all my time bk then on this xpac! good memories!
Loved this zone! Even in WotLK lots of 80s on my server chilled out here between Wintergrasp matches and it was here I learned the ways of mid air ganking! The joys of slow fall and some PoM! :P
The big mechanical thing is called a Fel Reaver which was made by the Burning Legion. So yes, it is both mechanical and demonic. Calm down and enjoy the music :)
i remember the first time i went through the portal, it was something amazing, the first thing i noticed was the sky, then i saw the demons just pouring towards the portal while horde/alliance defending, then looking back, portal at least twice as big as it was when i entered it. So much epicness
The brilliance of Hellfire Peninsula's, and in fact, the much of Outland's music (especially Nagrand, Hellfire Peninsula and Terokkar Forest) comes partially from the fact that they are based on Gustav Holst's Planets Suite (Gustav Holst - The Planets). And not just Outland: almost every foreign-planet sci-fi or fantasy movie/game music at least partially resembles one or more of the movements.
Preach. For me it was sailing Thousand Needles for the first time and hearing the Tauren theme in the background. That, and flying through the Dark Portal for the first time. Oh, and entering the Grizzly Hills and hearing THAT music. Epic. Epic. Epic.
my most epic feeling was when i just started playing wow as a human and after a level or 2 i went to Stormwind. The entrance, the music, the people, the auction house. It was magic. Too bad i got addicted and it became like a job.
"Magic that leaked through the Dark Portal warped the Blasted Lands, leaving an infertile desert landscape." Taken from Wowwiki. The Dark Portal ruined both sides turning the areas into a red wasteland. That is why they look similar.
i have a love for outland because the first time i played wow i rmr me and my wow friend questing in zangar together, and we both left and took a break for a while, he didnt ever come back which in a way is quite sad because i got to know the guy and it was a lot of fun questing first time on wow with my undead mage.
The start of the music reminds me of the first time i went through the portal, on every char when i reach 58 and go through the portal i still get the same feeling of epicness. Outland is for the fucking win
First Expansion: Best Expansion. Stepping into this zone and hearing this music was incredible. Replacing Raid gear with green quest rewards was an interesting turn though ;p....and who could forget the FEL REAVER!
Exactly! I remember it being hard to get rid of some purples and what not, but the stats on those new green items, and how much faster it made killing npc's go, made it all worth it.
Man I love the track that starts at 0:18. Reminds me of my first step into Outlands with 3 of my mates. We all re-rolled Horde before the expansion so that by the time we hit 60, the rush of 60's had passed and we had a much easier task of questing. =D
