Listen, I'm European so I have no say if "Eskimo" is a derogatory term or not. But if the name is creating all these problems for you and you think you'll be better off changing it, then go for it.

Some people may never get it. They’ll say you’re censoring yourself or giving in to cancel culture and being “soft”. Truth is, most people grow in life and realize some of the things they’ve said in the past that used to be acceptable actually weren’t, and they learn from it and make a change. I’m definitely guilty of using some pretty derogatory language when I was younger. But you learn, you grow, and make the appropriate change. You guys are doing what you feel is appropriate, and nobody else should be able to tell you otherwise. As for the term “Eskimo”, from an American perspective, that’s the term we’ve heard since we were kids. I never once thought you guys were being derogatory when I first discovered you. It wasn’t until the last decade or so that the term started getting talked about in the mainstream, even though from what I understand, groups of Inuit peoples have had an issue with it for a while. All that to say that it‘s somewhat of a new topic for a lot of Americans as well. Same thing that happened with the term Indian years ago, even tough a ton of people still use it instead of “Native American”. Bottom line, you guys do what you feel is best for your career, your personal growth, and yourselves, and I’ll still be here to support you along the way. 🤘 Also, glad to hear Nico handled Nicovid-19 well. 💪

I read "Escalation Callboy" and liked it at once. Pretty fitting as well. I can understand why you're doing this and I highly respect this decision. It shows that you guys are reflected enough to see: Ok, now that we are international more famous we are getting confronted with bad co notations of our name we never intended. This is something we never learned in school. Is is literally often written in books. At least in the 90's. Btw. Car Company's do have this trouble always. The new car name is offending in other parts of the world. So they get a new name in that region or even worldwide.

@@oldschoolgamer-w4u You should not forget, that they make music as their job and people change with the years. They may think about that because they want to reach more people and media (especially the ESC), but it is ok that way, because it is their own decision! They may change to be more popular and successful, but after years of hard work, they totally deserve it! For me it is ok, because they only change the name and may remove songs, but they do not change at all, they only reflect about themselves, about acceptance, etc.

@@oldschoolgamer-w4u this is such a reactionary hot take. It's wild man calm down, slow down and think about it. They made the name over a decade ago without the context of what the word meant. We as fans always knew their intentions were pure but now they are more aware of the context internationally so they are considering a change. That is literally all that is. You're take is as if people got upset they called someone dumb, no the word is literally an offensive word to a group of people. I mean you can choose to continue to want to deliberately offend people, that is certainly a choice someone can make, but people don't particular like dealing with that.

I am a fairly recent convert to your music, and as you say, it brings people together as most of the styles you intergrate into your sound are not styles I would normally listen to, yet here I am. I think you guys hit the nail on the head when you say Eskimo is not considered an insult in Europe. Hell, I grew up believing that is what they were called rather than Inuit or Yupik, and as far as I can tell, outside of themselves, the only countries it is deemed offensive is Canada and USA as you say. To me, what Canada and USA think does not matter, it is what the Inuit and Yupik people think is what matters. If they find it offensive then it is offensive, that is all that matters. I think the way you guys are handling it is absolutely the right way. Accepting that even though to us Europeans it is not meant as offensive, it may very well be so speaking to people with more knowledge of this rather than "Fred on the internet", is the intelligent way to gain true insight. And as we all know, you guys will make the correct decision whether to keep the name or not. Anyone who shouts "woke" or whatever the latest popular word is, needs to realise that as fans, unless we are affected by the word it is not our place to comment of how derogatory it is or is not. If you have to change your name, so be it, that will not stop us being fans of your music and sense of humour.

As soon as I heard Pump It, I knew you guys were the greatest band on the planet. I fully understand the difficult choices you are currently considering. There is one song that I really love but I won’t share it with anyone else because it will likely be offensive to others. I don’t know what the solution for that is, but I will keep listening to it because it is a great song. For the band name…… I live in Canada and reconciliation with the First Nations is, right now, a high priority and is in the news every day. As an example, our provincial museum is closing and removing most of the exhibits to be replaced with exhibits that better fit with reconciliation. I have been enjoying that museum for over 40 years and as of this month it is all gone, never to be seen again. I am also able to see that from Germany (and Europe) that the name is not a big deal. I quite like the name and wish that it didn’t cause people to be upset. Like you, I grew up with the titles of Indian and Eskimo and I never understood them to be offensive in any way. I have come to understand that the First Nations are allowed to promote their identity and protect their culture. If they don’t like those names, we should respect that. Having said that, I will still be a fan no matter what you decide to do with your name or your songs. I have a dumb idea for you to politely ignore. I have no doubt that you could come to Canada and do a tour but at the same time work with our national tv broadcaster and meet with First Nations musicians in a quest to understand the situation and to find a new name. Anyway, thanks for sharing the situation with us. I am excited to hear the new material.

Hey Guys! I am an Indigenous musician from Canada and I have to say your music is always something to look forward to. I must admit that there was some apprehensiveness at first when I first found your band, given the name. Eskimo itself is a derogatory term within Canada, just as it is saying the word "Indian". These terms have been used as seeing Indigenous people as heathens, or less than others, to put it lightly. These are terms that were used by those who "colonized" the country. Colonize, I mean by stealing lands and various forms of systematic genocide. The residential school systems were just one of the many heinous tools used to have this done, as well as the 60's scoop and so on, and so on. Also, the term Eskimo Callboy, may not ring well with many groups within North America such as MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women), where thousands of women (varying ages) have gone missing by means of abduction or trafficking. I am sure you have already done a bit or research on these issues. And I do understand that Europe tends to not have much info on these subjects. I am well aware of a festival in Germany that celebrates "Indian Traditions" and even had an "Indian TV Hero, Mantiou"... played by a white guy.. lol Which I find funny for many reasons. But it also shows the lack of education and thus the understanding of why it is wrong.. It is quite a cycle to break. Especially for something to have been engrained for so long. I am glad that you are taking the time to reflect on the matter, as not many others would even take the time to do that. I will say though that a name change, would certainly open up your fan base. But also understand the hesitancy as well.

This is absolute nonsense. I don't think there is a nation that deals more reflectively with its and other pasts than Germany. I myself was in America for years and also in Canada for a year and what is taught there in terms of history is absurd. Some of you across the pond still think that Hitler is still alive. Oo The word Eskimo is no more offensive than the word Jew. And the Jews don't complain about being called Jews either, because they are just that, Jews! And they are proud, of what they can be! That would be like banning "Canadians" from 2024, just calling Canadians, just because a handful of people feel something needs to change.

@@bujac9740 I don't think it's absolute nonsense, you're only addressing a small fracture of the message above and what might be interpreted the way you think it is. Even comparing the words Eskimo to Jew is rather far fetched - but I think you know that and I fell for your trap :-) I just wanted to point out that it's not very polite to address the very eloquently and thorough response above with the words "this is absolute nonsense" by saying that of course Germans reflect their own history very well, which was not the point of the message above. I'd rather say that Germans don't reflect American and especially Indigenous history of the people who live/lived there very well.
@winstonb5320
@winstonb5320 2 года назад
@@bujac9740 Something you should research, since you want to bring up those atrocities. Have a look into how Hitler was inspired to do some of things he did. You will be quite surprised. It takes a little digging and not a simple google search. I also would like to note that I never said Germany is not reflective. A matter of fact, they are quite reflective of what has happened before and look down upon those kinds of ideologies resurfacing. If anything, North America needs to take note on that. And as for the word Eskimo... You should do some research on that as well... it is a demeaning term.. hence why the more respectful term is Inuit, pretty different. I can safely say that of the 200 various indigenous communities within Canada alone, each one is unique in their culture and history. They do not simply fly under one identifying flag. That would be like you generalizing everyone who speaks German to be German... Austrians speak a very similar language, but very much different from each other. But to go even simpler.. imagine someone coming to your home. Never leaving.. they slowly start inviting their friends. They never leave.. their family.. and so on. And they tell you that your name is this from now on because like the sound of it... How would you feel? Not to mention the name to be something with a meaning that is degrading.. Now imagine you and your family being called that. And then your ancestors are only seen as that.. See where I am getting at? In all, I think it is great the band is reflective. Not many are willing to do that.

@Jafredi3105
@Jafredi3105 2 года назад
@florianstock376
@florianstock376 2 года назад

I'm from the US and don't know one person who finds the word Eskimo to be an insult. We grew up with it the same way you did. Gets so old hearing them cry and complain constantly -- I say ignore them and keep the name

Languages as a whole, and the meaning of specific words, evolve over time. Even some words that can be slightly inappropriate depending on the context can become completely inappropriate some years or decades later. The fact that you are willing to evolve along with these connotations is proof in and of itself that you never meant any harm, and I completely respect you for that. I'm honestly a little late to the party when it comes to discovering your music - I randomly came across a reaction video to Pump It and I was like "whoa, who are these guys?" and I've gone back and checked out all your music since then and become a fan. And I can tell from videos such as this one that you're people who not only truly care about their fan base, but also are willing to adjust in order to make even more people feel welcome. It's very clear that your music is meant to spread joy, and it's then completely understandable that you don't want to leave a bad taste with such things as some of your older songs and perhaps even your current name. The fact that you're even taking it as seriously as this, posting these updates and really looking into it thoroughly, once again shows that you're not out to hurt anyone and want to be as respectful as possible while still maintaining a certain edgy humor. I'm probably what some would call a very liberal person - anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-discrimination of any kind - but I can still tell the difference between when something is just a bit of humor and when people are genuinely stereotypical, and everything I've seen so far of your videos and music etc. tells me that you're not trying to be genuinely stereotypical. Also, I'm a musician myself and have had a band in the past where I wrote a lot of lyrics, and I understand the feeling of looking back and no longer thinking that some lyrical choices were the best and could potentially be misunderstood. The fact that you're acknowledging this as well shows that aforementioned adaptability and will to evolve. So for what this guy's opinion is worth, I'll continue to be a fan and support you guys.

So lebt meine zweitliebste Band in meiner Lieblingsband weiter. As an American, I will say the name initially gave me a big hesitation before I heard any of your work. That said, after getting to know the band a little through the music, lyrics, videos, behind the scenes, etc., I don't associate that word with the negative anymore. To me, it really does end up a case of reclaiming the word for something else in a positive way. HOWEVER, I'm not a native person, or a person that is offended by that word personally, so my opinion is a bit moot there. I really sympathize for you guys because this is a tricky spot for sure. Regardless, huge huge HUGE kudos to you for even bringing up this topic at all.
