I live a twenty minute car drive from filey and knew Butlins very well and helped to remove the fruit machines when it was winding down .I did manage to buy an office desk for £8 when they started to sell things of and I still use it every day so sad went it all ended Happy days

A fascinating documentary, and very much a period piece. That style of doco was ruthlessly parodied by Victoria Wood with Duncan Preston as the journalist. The early adverts from the 50s are hilarious, with their cut-glass accents. The two slightly fey young men discussing whether to go to St Tropez or Skegness found its way into a Julian & Sandy sketch.

I spent many happy holidays at Butlins, when very young with my parents. Then when older, with friends that I made there. Then with my own family for several years running at Warners, Puckpool IoW. The children were entertained by the Green Coats and they made friends and wandered to camp to their hearts content. Now, the poor children often go on holiday with their parents to faraway places, or even close to home, but rarely get the opportunity to socialise with other children.

I had a holiday in Minehead with my family in 1966 when I was 12. The chalets were very basic and had rough stone walls and there was a cubbyhole with a curtain for the wardrobe. We used to get woken up by a radio jingle every morning at 7.00. There was an open cable car that went over all the chalets and the swimming pools had glass walls so if you were in a café underneath you saw all the swimmers' legs go by. I don't remember much about the meals other than long tables and bread and butter but I had a great time spending all day on my own going around all the amusements.

Happy times! I was 9 in 1966 and was at Minehead. I loved it, especially the freedom to explore and spend hours at the funfair and pools, with the occasional check in with mum & dad!! I remember the smell of the dining room and loved the soup! The plate holders the waiters carried to the tables, always bread and butter and a pot of tea!! I have photos of the open, wooden slatted chair lift - a bit scary!! I remember feeling sorry for friends who spent their holidays at a hotel or guest house - how boring!!

The family rooms were very spartan in the 1960's and almost like an Army Barracks but people were in fact much fitter and harder than the wimps of today !

Amazing to see how to see how life's changed over the years. Interesting to see how people have lived and gone but the world keeps turning. Love Butlins but it's changed along over the decades. Although the fair ride looked better in the past. Without Butlins there would be no British holiday. I go 5-6 times a year lovely to see how it was bk in the day

'So what were the Redcoat duties?' Roy Hudd '... dancing with the ugly birds ..' Jeez, double take moment, did he just actually say that on tv? Times sure have changed.
@speakertreatz
@speakertreatz 3 года назад
There's a more recent documentary, from 2011 called The Butlins Story and one of the Redcoats, when explaining his job, says the same thing. So they haven't changed that much. I think he says 'less attractive girls' or something slightly more PC but the job was the same: dance with the ugly birds.
