- Ep.253: I'm a working mom of 12 years who is concerned because of my husband. Every day is like walking on thin ice. It's because my husband yells surprise all the time! I thought we were going for a bike ride, but I ended up riding 389km in 2 days to get home! I'm an academy instructor in the 30's. Our director is a troublemaker! He rejects students he doesn't like. How is the academy supposed to stay in business? I'm a housewife in the 30's with two sons. My husband was reliable when we dated. But he completely changed after getting married. He always gets mad. He gets mad over a fried egg and even gets mad at our 6-year-old son. He's getting to be more and more like a boy. What will I do about him?

Poor Ted. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable it was for him specially when the interpreter said she is here because of YOU and there’s a clear language barrier and they are discussing him. I had a flash back of kids taunting me in middle school when I spoke zero English.

That's Erine/Erin/Euaerin/E.U.E.rine/Euerine/Lee Hyemin. You can call her whatever you want haha, her real name is Lee Hyemin, she used to be a model before debut and is the tallest in the group at 175.5 cm, she's the main rapper, visual and lead dancer. She used to be one of the lead vocalists/vocalists.

I know right! although his approach is unorthodox, I can't help but see the logic in it. I mean, why waste your time and resources on kids who don't even want to be there. and if he has the instinct to tell that from the consultation it's his prerogative to deny them entry. I can imagine it's hell on the finances though. but then again, this is an unpopular opinion I guess
@monglaura
@monglaura 8 лет назад
Hannah Mckay Especially knowing in Korea how much students study and are forced to study by their parents. I mean I can understand from the point of view of how the country is why the parents would try their best to get their kids to study, but at the same time in my mind this is not the best approach especially when the child is just not good at studying. Doesn't mean their dumb, but they just are not good at textbook studies and because their worth in life is judged purely on academics at the time, I can see how this director's approach is actually kind of... you know logical. To me it is like the saying "If you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree, it will live all it's life believing it is stupid" or something along those lines. Plus, if someone doesn't want to learn something, they will never be able to. To truly learn something and be successful at it you can't just be pushed at it, you really have to want it. Well, my opinion at least. In summary - you go director-nim!!
@carrotmint
@carrotmint 8 лет назад
I totally agree with the director as well, although business wise, not too sure how the finances can manage. Teaching is education, not providing a service. I can relate that the director just want to accept those who want to learn and improve themselves. There are students with a "don't care about shit" attitude that can bring bad influence on the others. The learning atmosphere is important.

+Adelaide Ziki they're reacting normally as anyone would react to a strange foreigner suddenly staying at your house
@Adel-wm3rh
@Adel-wm3rh 8 лет назад
demalih I know that's anyone would be freaked out having a random stranger staying at their house especially without getting told. However when the lady was describing the guy saying "black guy with dreadlocks" they all grasped & it seems like they have negative perceptions of black people. It's not only about the show itself but even many people know that Skorean people are racist, it has the largest rate of people being bullied for their race/colour of skin and racism. Also I know this because I know many people that left Korea because they couldn't cope, they said the country itself is not ready to be international. However not everyone is racist some people are nice. I am just saying they are not used to diversity yet like other countries.
@demalih
@demalih 8 лет назад
Adelaide Ziki we would've probably received the same "freaked out" reaction if she mentioned caucasian with lots of tattoo... I think it's more because the dreadlocks/tattoo are not very common in Korean culture and perceived as rebellious

I don't see the racism in the first concern? The lady said that it wasn't that she didn't like Ted; it was that her husband was making decisions without discussing it with her. As for the excessive reactions by the audience and hosts, isn't it because reaction culture is huge in Korean entertainment? The husband in the second concern...just...just...*sigh*

About Ted: I think you handled the situation nicely. I'm not really mad at the wife as it is the husband who made this mess. But I do think the husband has a great elation ship with the Ted, so that's a plus.... BUT I ant help but think, would all of the people ( wife and counsellors) in the crowd be acting this way if he was white/ non black? The way they told him to imitate "Nuna" was in a very stereotypical voice . Even the way the wife describes him was bias. Really " black man with reggae hair sticking up?" His hair doesn't look messy, it's well kept.

The wife from the first concern had a right to be upset. Her husband makes decisions without consulting her. She could have done without talking about his dreads negatively, but that's not such a big deal. I was really disappointed with the hosts. Not every black person speaks like a "gansta rapper," guys.
@diamcole
@diamcole 8 лет назад
Alright, unpopular opinion here but I can understand why the first wife would be uncomfortable with Ted living with them. The biggest issue is that her husband didn't discuss his plans with her. The perceptions Koreans have about black people are unfortunate but that's the way it is. You can't really expect much acceptance of them when their exposure is severely limited. Issues like this aren't native to South Korea, you're going to find them everywhere you go. Obviously I don't think that her fear of him as a foreigner is justified but unfortunately, she feels that way and had he talked with her about it prior to bringing Ted home, he would have known that. Your husband bringing a random man home to live with your family for an extended period of time would make most women feel uncomfortable. She doesn't know anything about him. Ted seems like a really nice guy and he was a good sport about all of this, hopefully this experience won't cause anyone to look at him in a negative way.
@requiemforamerica8432
@requiemforamerica8432 8 лет назад
+Diamond It's really not about racism in this case. No wife would want her husband to bring anyone home to stay them without consultation. The fact that he is a foreigner makes things worse mainly bc communication is severely limited.

yep, someone stranger come into house immediately, not some foreigner :-) you know, every outsider who suddenly live in our house, sure it's kind of tough for adapt(how much it is, it's depends). For example, parent in-law maybe? :-D But if you communicate with them well before, it'll become much easier right? :-)

The first concern was a bit iffy for me at first, but as the situation went on I looked at it from both sides to get a better understanding of it. Ted yes is a foreigner & African American man, however I didn't get the feeling it was race related from the wife's perspective. I think it more had to do with the fact she felt very betrayed by the husband because he was doing a lot of random things behind her back that didn't really start with Ted, but because he brought him to their home to live for 3 months I can sympathize with her that...yeah it was quite rude of him to do that without even discussing with his wife about moving him in for a while because they needed extra funds etc. Ted seemed really super nervous & awkward and I truly felt sorry for him mainly because he had got sucked into a problem that never really started with him, the problems were between the wife & husband because he was always doing things behind her back so she was constantly feeling betrayed. Now with Ted I think the only downfall to the situation was he could not properly speak to the wife himself in Korean because he did not know to speak it much, but I personally feel if Ted knew how to communicate with the wife in Korean about the reason he was there and how long, then she probably wouldn't felt so insecure and would've been a little more comfortable being in her home with him, but because Ted knew next to no Korean I think was the main issue for her, but as I said the overall concern she had was her husband not being honest about things he was doing and always surprising her all the time, that was the main issue she didn't like. So Ted was not the real issue, just a casualty of a much bigger problem. The fact that their sons clearly liked Ted however I think brought a more sense of comfort for the mother, where she doesn't need to see him as some sort of a threat to her kids. I wish that family the best, and I hope Ted starts learning Korean soon as that is very important being a resident of the country plus it will bring him closer to the family. He seems like too good of a guy to be caught up in things beyond his control.

@happiness17273747576777
@happiness17273747576777 8 лет назад
I think most of you are overthinking the issue regarding Ted. Bring it back to your current situation - if a family member brought a stranger home without informing anyone, regardless of race, would you be comfortable? Things are only made more uncomfortable for the 1st concern's lady because their cultures and native language are different. It really has nothing to do with race or racism, but more of how the husband needs to discuss things with the family before going through with it. She's already mentioned she likes Ted at the end. By making everything seem like color plays a part, isn't that even more racist?
@titemartiniquaise
@titemartiniquaise 8 лет назад
(This is my personal feeling) I don't think it's a color problem like "He is black, he is the problem" It's a little more subtle, like I didn't like the part when they asked him to say Nuna weirdly when they already heard that he doesn't have this kind of voice. I didn't like that they have to emphasize his hair, it really makes me uncomfortable. I really felt bad when he said "I'm not going to hurt the children", it means that he thought himself that people around him saw him like a danger, which is really sad because I'm sure that Koreans didn't meant it (at least after he had spoken). Even YoungJa were worried about him thinking he is the problem (I love her more and more) when they said that the family was okay, why not her, she said "first he is a foreigner and a man so it's uncomfortable " I don't know... I feel bad. maybe that I'm overreacting for this one. but to me it means that because that I'm a foreigner you wouldn't put your confidence in me as fast as if I was Korean. Honestly, it hurts 😅 voilà, that was my review, I hope I've answered some of your questions ^.^

Kanon Cardinal It *is* somewhat rude, but I think in Korea it is considered a friendly banter, an ice breaker. Of course it's also potentially dangerous as you can see there are many concerns in Hello Counselor where there are people who cares too much of what others think, they felt hurt by those kind of banter.
@wesday3652

For the 2nd concern, i really understood how that husband felt. He did things right, yet people kept suspecting him for things that he didn't. If you were to put yourself in his shoes you would also find that you would end up doing the things that he did. The wife's tone is so damn annoying and she does it all the time, no wonder he kept leaving. But to be honest, if you were to lay everything wrong they both did, it was equal.
@InLKdream

for the concern with Ted, you do have to wonder if she would react the same if it was a white stranger that the husband had brought home, i don't know why but i felt that after 2/3 months she would get used to it (everyone at home is okay except her) but because he's black, she can't get over it, really the concern should have just stated her husband brought a random stranger home but it was the fact that it was worded to paint a stereotype in the minds of listeners, "black, stranger, dreadlocks etc)...i felt so bad for ted having to explain that he wouldn't hurt the kids, so unnecessary

+Ohnoyoucannotcolourmybook(Ծ^Ծ) They just have never experiencing the case when they'll thank God that the stranger vanished with money instead of their kids. I actually surprised that she still not leaving home with her kids. Occupation actually plays more important role than race. In this case, he's a teacher so she don't go as far as bringing their kids and stay at her parent's house. Black-Teacher vs White-Unemployed. I personally think that the mother would leave home if the stranger is white-unemployed more than black-teacher.

How is Ted's hair 'reggae'? I don't see dreadlocks (which even some white people have e.g. Newton Faulkner) but just long cornrows. She didn't say she was uncomfortable cuz he was black or annoying .. She said its cuz he's a foreigner & a man . Imagine living with a random foreigner that you can't even communicate with for 3 months out of the blue one day . That would be really uncomfortable and annoying .

For the student who dont bring pencil in their hand at class, maybe they just dont have it anymore. Like me. My friends always borrowed mine and never gave it back. At first I really love to had a pencil case but then I just bought a piece of pencil/pen and safe it on my bag. One day, me and my teamworks had to face a teacher for consultation of our task. And I didnt find my pencil at my bag. So I just sat there and listening and asking a question but never wrote it down. And finally my teacher notice what happen with me and got angry. "Why dont you write?" So I couldnt lie, "I dont have a pen" (actually I was too hectic with the task and didnt prepare or check in my bag). And then she said, "so you will remember all of this? How smart" I was so embarrassed and then ask my friend if they have another pen/pencil and borrow it (i know they were like me.. Idk why I am telling this after I heard the prolog of the 3rd case.

As a teacher I really don't like the owner of the institute. He thinks himself a good teacher but he is a worst teacher ever. He just wants to teach students who obey his order. A real good teacher never select students and never gives up students.

I haven't watched the first concern yet but after reading a few comment I..idk some people don't really seem shocked that the husband brought a stranger to live with his family. Maybe it's just me since I grew up with overly protective parents but seriously if it was me I would definetely feel umconfortable even if he is a good guy because he's a stranger

I feel bad for Ted, he seems like a nice guy. The wife to me seems closed minded about foreigners that she can't even get to know Ted as a person. She should give him a chance before ostracizing him. Even though I can understand why at first she felt that way, but it's been 3 months. She is making it difficult for her own self, but putting the blame on Ted.

But besides the Ted part in the concern, I understand the wife's frustration with the husband. Relationships involve more than one person, so it cannot be just one person's job to make the decisions.

It's really surprising how people r still so narrow minded in the world we live in now. The crowd gasped at the fact that it wasn't just a foreigner but a BLACK foreigner and that was basically bad news to them. I understand that it must have been surprising when he came with someone saying he is living with them but it would have been a whole different story if it was a white man or any other race than black. There was really no need for her to describe Ted as a man with reggae hair sticking up as if she was implying that he didn't look well kept. No one in the family had a problem with him except for her so they could try and fix the husbands problem but they could maybe and try and fix her problem if that's possible.

I feel like the wife and Ted were put in uncomfortable situations. Of course you should tell your spouse the details before bringing someone into your house and for Ted, he never asked for this, he does not want to make anybody feel bad. He seems like a nice guy and I wish the husband would have communicated with his wife better.

The last concern was very interesting to me because I grew in a strict education environment. But I got my teaching degree in a western country. I've seen both side of teaching approaches. We always can't determine which is the 'right' way. But I can say that Asians can be too harsh but western kids are often too coddled.

I don't think this concern has anything to do with his skin color tbh. Everyone's overreacting a bit, just because a black person is involved. It's the fact that the husband didn't tell his wife ahead of time, and having someone stay with you for 3 months, EVEN if it were a friend, can be very burdensome. They have 2 children, and I highly doubt their place is really big enough.

Based on the comments about Ted, I can see you guys are more concerned in policing those who are uncomfortable watching that part and feeling it was discriminating/racist rather than actually trying to understand why they feel uncomfortable. Everyone knows and acknowledges anyone could be cautious of a stranger but they are literally saying keywords that have been used to describe Ted along with tone and body language made them feel he was targeted unfairly when he meant no harm at all. Just because she says she cares for him or likes him at the end does not mean she is not racist or have very discriminating/racist views. That's called silent racism since being a bold racist is not socially "acceptable" in most modern instances. No one would bring up race if it wasn't actually a known fucking problem in the world where we are judged unfairly because of our race. Just because it doesn't happen to you or you don't feel uncomfortable with the issues, or you don't like talking about factual racial issues doesn't give you the right to dismiss neither devalue those who do feel this is about race. That is very rude of y'all.
@titemartiniquaise
@titemartiniquaise 8 лет назад
When I read the comments about Ted and racism, I feel like nobody is trying to understand the other. Kind of sad. First, I want to say something, you can be a very nice person and having some racist issues. My friend do it sometimes and I tell them right away so they can change. Myself sometimes, I think wrong. Maybe you would say "oh she didn't mean it" or "she didn't know". It's nice of you, but trying to ignore that I just said something racist won't help me to change. And to others, who don't know me Ok, so now let's face it and say it comfortably, so we can change it from now on. THERE WERE RACISM HERE! Asking him to say "Nuna" this way was rude. Pointing the fact that his hair are different to make the problem of the husband bigger is...very awkward. And it's not a big deal, nobody is sent to prison here, since it's a trait that we can all CORRECT.

OMG so many people in the comments are bringing in racism and saying how evil and mean the wife is in the first concern..... I watched the whole thing and I didn't feel that at all?? She's such a nice and good person?? I wouldn't have let Ted stay for this long TBH.. A few weeks maybe but did you hear the husband? He's staying for a year.... Why would I want a complete stranger living in my house and he's a foreigner they can't communicate. Ted is a good person ofc, but It doesn't seem like Ted understands how uncomfortable the wife would feel. Like If I were Ted I would feel so bad and uncomfortable living with a family ?? I could completely understand the wife's feelings and plus her husband made things 100x worse... She's a really good wife for letting him stay TBH it has nothing to do with race.....

I agree that this isn't necessarily racist behaviour. And that the concern was mainly about how the husband chose to handle situations. But I totally understand why people are bringing "racism" up. And it's because they way the reacted to him was not so friendly and polite. The hosts were being a bit mean especially about his differences. You're just as bad as actual racists for denying being able to see where these people are coming from, who are complaining about racism, even if it isn't racism.

the third guy has the right mentality, he's not money hungry. that's the problem academies that focus on profit and don't care about the students. he's a bit harsh but he's coming from the right place. not saying he's a good director, but he definitely can become a good, maybe even the best director. he should try to embrace the bad students and try to teach them like it was mentioned by dongyeop. he should give them 3 chance to get their shit together before kicking them out

Personally, I don't agree with the academy's director's way of dealing with things and I don't exactly see the "affection" of his. IMO, he's too quick to judge the students and wouldn't it be more meaningful if he & the teachers could change the "supposedly delinquents students" around in a positive way? That's changing their lives and inspiring/ preparing them to be better people, one of the most important goal in education. Being selective is fine to a certain extent, but I think he's overdoing it :/
@carrotmint
@carrotmint 8 лет назад
That's being over-optimistic. U must understand that a person's character is build up over the years and does not change suddenly because of one person. I think the director is right to accept those that he thought can be improved than to accept all. Students do influence each other, and bad influence spread quickly.

Actually the director is quite right...for the student's career they should be strict....academy is not a place to hangout with friends or having chilling attitude.........the instructor just wants to run the academy with more students i.e. With more money.....But director genuinely wants to help the students for their future career....Thats y he is so strict...
