The RX audio quality from my FT-890/AT is unrivaled. Paired with the DSP-59+, the 890 holds up fairly well against modern transceivers.

Yes, for some reason, the DSP-59+ doesn’t appear for sale very often. People must be holding onto theirs. My brother found a mint condition FT-890/AT and later obtained a DSP-59+ on eBay. It was only there for a short time and he grabbed it. Just keep checking the used market and maybe another will pop up. They do appear once in a while. Congratulations on getting the FT-890/AT. It has a wide-range tuner built in, something you don’t get in radios anymore. I used mine as a mobile after it was my base station for years. The tuner allowed me to work 10, 12, 15, 17, and 20 meters with one 10 meter ham stick. I’m considering putting it back into not my truck. My new radio’s tuner can only touch up my ham sticks for the one band they are made for. Enjoy one of the most fun transceivers that was ever made. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio I bought the FT-890 for all the reasons you mention. I did a lot of comparisons and just waited until this model became available as my fist HF rig on a budget. Older technology has some advantages. We cannot assume that newer technology is always best. The DSP and SDR era has made it possible for manufacturers to make less expensive radios while increasing their profit margin. They depend on our ignorance to make it possible. And enough of us are uninformed enough to fall for it, so I’m afraid the trend will continue. It is my opinion that Yaesu has struck the best balance between old and new, but their approach is still not perfect. It just represents the best available today, especially at an affordable price. Their hybrid approach has proven to be a good compromise. I just wish they would go back to analog noise blanker and Auto-notch. 73, de N4HNH

I have a hard time emotionally selling my Icom 735, which I bought new at the Dayton Hamfest in 1992. Seems worth more than the $300 - 350 they typically sell for used. It is nearly mint condition after all these years. Production of the 735 went back to the late 1980's. They were considered mobile size and is identical in size to the Icom 7300. I sure you remember the Icom 735? Rated 4.8 out of 5 on eham with 124 reviews. N8LVR

There are quite a few differences in features between the 725 and the 735, although they are the same time period. Neither of them have 6 meters. On a different note, I must say you do a great job on your videos. Still thinking about the FT DX10. Already have 2 Icom 706mk2g's (first one bought used in 2006) and an Icom 7300. I believe I read several places that the Icom 706mk2g is the most purchased radio up to that point in time. Excellent radio. Some say the sales of 7300 are greater, which is probably true.

Bonjour, Interesting comparative approach. I look forward to the test between this device and the FTdx-10. If you are hearing distortion in your FTdx10, you probably have DNF enabled. DNF is known to cause distortion. Again, some features were better executed in analog circuits. Noise Blanker is another. 73, de N4HNH

Congratulations! Welcome! The FT-890/AT is one of the greatest. Connect the line-in of the DSP-59+ to the external speaker connection on the radio. Then connect an external speaker to the DSP-59+ speaker connection. If you want to send the output of the DSP-59+ to a powered speaker, use the line-out connection instead. Be sure to connect the PTT of the DSP-59+ to the radio as well. The DSP-59+ needs to know when the radio transmits. 73, de N4HNH

Thanks so much for posting this video! I've got older rigs (Kenwood TS-530S & 599D "Twins") and though they both have 500Hz CW filters, I've wondered if a Timewave DSP (or similar) would make an difference! I have an 891 that I originally wanted to use mobile but might become a POTA rig...if I don't haul the '530S with an external inverter, out into the parks. Dragging a 27lb.
