“Walls of Jericho” is Helloween ‘s debut album and this shit is pure madness. Not a dull moment, the entire album is a massacre and it’s far heavier than each of the America’s big 4 of the thrash metal. Hansen’s vocals are piercing the air, his guitar duo with Michael Weikath is as iconic as Smith/Murray and Tipton/KKDowning, Marcus’s jazzy bass lines become more intricate with every next listen and the secret weapon - Ingo fucking Schwichtenberg’s drums ( RIP) ! My god, these drums … Helloween have always, I mean always, had amazing drummers. Ingo was a beast, Uli Kusch was an academic, and the current drummer Daniel Löeble is a combination of both. Honestly we all reacted like this 02:57 upon our first contact with this beast of a song and an album. The album’s closing track “How many tears” is as intense as the opener and you should definitely check out the live version with the 3 singers from “United Alive”(2018)

Their song "Starlight" from their debut E.P. has an intro with the London Bridge tune, but the lyrics are "happy happy helloween". They were bsically doing a callback to that here. Very few were probably hearing Helloween in the states when this album was out, they didn't get exposure here until they had a couple music videos in '87 and '88, and the "Headbanger's ball Tour" in 1989 with Anthrax and Exodus.

Saw them live 2 weeks ago in Bamberg/Germany and it was an absolute blast. All 3 singers so far, Hansen (well, also on guitar), Kiske, Deris, together on stage and sharing the songs. They played a whole section of "Walls of Jericho" songs and Kai Hansen did all of them. That guy is an absolute legend in german heavy metal. "How many tears" is another of my favorites from this album.

, it’s an iconic song by an iconic band, amazing choice. Some speed metal bands from the us are Agent Steel and Savage Grace, if you’re into this things, you should check them out, but “Walls of Jericho” is more than just a speed metal, it has everything which the metal scene has provided until the point of release - Halfordian vocals, amazing guitars, crazy rhythm section, and it’s impossible to put this sound under a single label. You have Heavy Metal, some traces of punk, thrash metal, and it combines the melody of Maiden, the razor guitars of Judas Priest, some of the darkness of Venom ( the culmination of the solo in “Phantoms of death” is as brutal as Venom’s “Bloodlust”) and a low key goofiness, actually, which distinguished Helloween from the rest in the 80’s scene that were taking themselves a bit seriously… Thank you so much for this reaction, if you’re really into it, prepare for amazing stuff around Helloween’s discography

in 1985 I had this record when it came out, it's really a killer. I was 17 at the time and I was in the middle of my metal phase. This album marked my youth in an incredible way as Lovebites marks my present. In fact, you can feel the influence of this album on some of Lovebites' compositions. When you listen to this track, you can see that the drumming is turned towards cymbal playing. Haruna from Lovebites has this same style of playing, normally helloween is his mentor band. You listen to helloween you hear Lovebites for those who know. The vocal melody of the chorus, during the chorus is played on the guitar at the same time, it is also the trademark of Lovebites on some tracks.

I love this song as I do this entire album. Yes theres lots of bands that played thrash and speed in the 80s but Helloween had a way of combining them all together perfectly and really shaped the Power Metal genre to come. Helloween's saying was "Remember, Halloween comes once a year, but you can have Helloween anytime..."

Overkill, Metal Church and Anthrax had similar vibes in their first albums. Speed metal developed into thrash metal in the US. In Europe it evolved to power metal. But fast pace metal songs can be found in great bands like Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and even Van Halen... like in Light up the sky.

I didn't hear almost any music, got asked from a classmate if i can make him a tape of his keeper album in 1987...Helloween was the first band i heard live. Kiske, is for me, one of the best singer in metal. Left Helloween with Kiske, didn't like Derris but found them again after the United tour and have to confess, i hope they keep "United" Helloween.

I think you should give Deris another chance. He’s an awesome singer and a songwriter. Many people seem to be having a hard time forgiving go him for not being Kiske but you know what reality is ? Helloween exist and are still on the map thanks to Deris. As much as I love Kiske, do you know what’s he’s best at ? Singing other people’s songs. That’s right. And he knows it. Amazing performer, but not successful creatively. As opposed to Andi, who, again, saved this band and Kiske himself had said it many times in recent interviews, but he’s also very hard working, very prolific and very talented songwriter. Look at the back of every album since 1994 and you’ll be amazed by how much this guy contributed to the band. For at least two decades he took mostly shot from the rigid fans and he replied with … love. Genuine love. Never bitches once. Not even once. He smiled, kept doing his thing, and finally people started to see how much of a treasure he is. Stop being upset at Deris for being himself already. At this point we have an amazing duo and both singers interact unexpectedly smoothly together, and blend together like In and Yang. Brutal songs - Andi. Beautiful songs - Kiske. And they have a broad zone where they overlap and this is the most beautiful and fruitful part They are the two best singers on the European scene. But differ greatly from on another. Let’s quit comparing them

That’s a fact. Chris Jericho himself is a bass player in the Canadian heavy metal band Fozzy. He had chosen this pseudonym because “Walls of Jericho “ is his favorite album indeed . His finishing submission move was called “Walls of Jericho” if I recall correctly.
