Helmet is one of the most underrated, unheard of, and underscored bands that I can think of. Most people don't know about them, but their CDs are completely awesome from beginning to end. I play them all the time in my car, still to this day with out any desire to skip a single track. Helmet never got all the credit they deserve.
There was this unique sound coming up in the early 90’s, bands like Helmet, Quicksand, Biohazard, and Life Of Agony that had roots in both Metal and Hardcore. There was so much crossover happening with Metal, Hardcore, Punk and Stoner Rock in the late 80’s and early 90’s that it seems very confusing.
Aftertase left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. I want to like it but Betty and Meantime are so much better with that noise rock/Post hardcore sound. Recommend some tracks to me and maybe ill change my mind
Although I couldn't care less about how anyone found this song, I find it crazy that so many only know it from a video game! Was no one around with this song was on MTV? I remember seeing this video when I was like ten and being blown away! Am I that damn old? Please tell me someone else knows this song from somewhere other that GTA San Andreas (awesome game BTW)!!!
Bat Nuklier Oh god how I miss Headbanger's Ball! MTV made a huge mistake by dropping their niche music shows like HBB and Yo! MTV Raps (yes I liked that show too). Hell they made a mistake dropping music altogether but that was their first.
I remember the days when this was played on ZROCK radio station. Megadeth, Pantera, Tripping Daisy, AIC, Primus, Prong ETC ETC. Dude were just getting old face it!
Lol I played San Andreas about 6 months ago and I've been on a big Helmet amd Depeche Mode kick ever since. Meantime is one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
lol I share Slayer with my neighbors. He tries to tell me what to do "on my own property" So I blast heavy metal and whatever else I can throw in the mix just to make him feel uncomfortable which in return makes me feel comfortable.
I totally disagree. Looking at a dude onstage who looks like he mowed my lawn is pretty boring, vs acts that are VISUALLY FUN TOO, from Gwar to The Osmond Brothers to Jimmy Page in his dragon suits! IF YOU ARE GETTING UP ON A STAGE...you are asking us to LOOK AT YOU. Okay, well what are you VISUALLY DOING that's worth me looking? It's RUDE to get onstage dressed boring.
Beavis & Butthead 2020. I really believe they could take our country in a new direction...At the very least, the debates would be awesome. "Mr Biden, how do you respond to the claim that you are an ass munch?" "Well. I must say that munching ass is important and no one should be deprived of the right to munch ass. Do I have the ass munch vote yet?"...Ok... "And Mr Trump, how would you respond to the fact that...Oh hell, we should be so lucky as to to Mr. Butthead in office right now."
+Mistifyed They performed at Knotfest this year... it was pretty badass. I remember coming across this band in the early 90's and like you, anytime I hear them, "nostalgia."
@@samuelwetz8378 if I remember correctly, I think Primus and Helmet were signed to the same label at the time, so it probably the same warehouse from the Mr Krinkle video
If this gets you pumped up, you should listen to the original. You know, the one from Pantera. This band stole the riff note for note lmao. Bunch of losers

I was a sophomore in high school when this dropped. It was such a big deal to anyone who listened to rock, punk, or metal. I still jam to this album and Betty to this day.
I remember first hearing this song on Headbanger's Ball. I went out to my local Tower Records and got Meantime straightaway. Ah, Headbanger's Ball. That, and Alternative Nation, those were my jams.
Helmet are like Celtic Frost. They're one of those off-the-radar heavy bands that influenced everybody, but your average person doesn't know them by name.
Helmet lead me to so many great bands. I really lament that MTV turned into a garbage dumpster of reality TV trash. 120 minutes, headbangers ball, mtvraps, the daily countdown, they really did expose a lot of kids to incredible music before they turned into a shitbowl of visu as long poison.

Yeah dude! I went to a st Andrews informal when I was 18,so I'm guessing 91...all the beer you could drink and the main act was a seriously still way cool mental as anything at a time when all members were living the dream and as an act way beyond the norm...I fully remember reg taking the piss out of the front of stage bouncer types and everyone on stage just fully enjoying the performance that by that point in their lives as a band compared to the eighties, the members had outside interests...but as a band on that night at that particular annual event-absolutely 100% enjoying themslves!
There's a bridge near the first turn after the first vagos get kicked of, go on the bridge and hop on the train when it comes, kill the vagos and u got a win without cheating
@@ianhall6614 even his most simple fills, are really interesting. there is something about how he can hit his snare, kick and cymbals within. something about his strikes.
@@jackcravford8744 To me it always sounded like he was trying to break his snares, the hits are so powerful. I have yet to find another drummer that forces me to listen like Stanier can
+Kuraiyo yeah, you are right, their songs are good but you ever seen Slipknot? the first thing you say when you see them for the first time is that they are psychopathic killers..
I think a gimmick is great for live stuff but it's not necessary. Likes of Slipknot, Tool, Rammstein etc put on a great show that goes well with their music where bands like Gojira or Korn etc. put on less of a visual performance but they're extremely tight live you can just stand there in awe in between head banging.
Actually the 90's (and late 80's) were all about image. That's why Helmet and this video were so revolutionary when it came out back in '92. I remember watching it on mtv back in high school and it blew me away. peace out!
Just a quick note for the younger fans of this band: It's really kind of crazy for the older people like me who grew up in this era to hear this song again. Youngsters may not know but when it came out Helmet had generated SO much buzz! MTV and other various music-centered magazines like Rolling Stone and Spin had anointed them as the band to change music and talked about them like they were the 2nd coming of Jesus. This band was like a cornered rabid animal with expectations from their record label and the music scene in general that was practically unbelievable. The bar was set so high they could never live up to the hype. I specifically remember someone saying, "Helmet is the next big thing, the next Nirvana". Note 4/1/2023 - I just want to stress that the comparisons I make between Helmet and Nirvana is mostly to do with record company sales projections and not which band is subjectively "better" than the other. Helmet and Nirvana are/were VERY different bands sonically. Nirvana could never have been as percussively heavy and occasionally brutal as helmet, and helmet was never going to write lyrics as silky-clever as Cobain.
Yeah I remember them being pushed to the forefront and being sold as the next big thing. As you say they were never going to live up to the hype. Loved this song though.
They did not make fun of Helmet. The quote was "If you saw these guys on the street, you wouldn't even know they're cool." Talking about the short hair.
This was my shit in 1992. I listened to the cassette on constant repeat for weeks when it came out. I was 16 at the time and semi-homeless, crashing at various houses of skater friends of mine whose parents would tolerate me. There was this skater kid, everyone called him Jumbo, he was a legit midget. Not a dwarf like you see in movies, but a miniature person- normal proportions but just tiny. At 16 he was the size of a 9/10 year old kid and as far as I know, he never grew any bigger. A bunch of us fuckups and homeless/runaway punks and skaters would crash at his place, where he lived with his dad who was schizophrenic or something. He was on medication and usually cool, but every other week or so he would go off his meds, flip out and kick everyone out of the house with no notice and we would all have to scramble to find somewhere else to sleep for awhile. The house was a sparsely furnished mess. Jumbo's room had a mattress on the floor and nothing else. We all slept on the floor except for Jumbo, who got the mattress of course. The walls were covered in graffiti and had a bunch of holes punched through them. It would seem pretty rough to most people but it was paradise for us. So anyways, Helmet's album Meantime came out that summer in 1992 when I was staying off and on at Jumbo's and I listened to the cassette so much while staying there that anytime I hear any of the songs from that album they immediately transport me back to that time and place.
Top 5 of my all time fave songs ever, never fades, never loses pace, even so still relevant till this day. Hits hard, speaks the truth, leaves it's damage if you listen to the lyrics and take heed.
Great example of how a baritone can sing effectively in rock/metal in his natural range without screaming or growling! Killer vocals large in part to his excellent melody writing.
If I hear a band that sounds Really good and has the groove and then the Vox comes in Screaming and that's it, I'm so over it. There's a time and place for screaming. Helmet was good, really good.
@@soheibkidouche4745 not only nu-metal, but also noise, sludge, hardcore, post hardcore, i can go endlessly. Norma Jean stated this band and Page (they have one song together) as one of the main influences. Daniel Davison (top notch drummer) stated John as his main influence.

Helmet is like you took all the at-that-time-relevant rock/metal genres and extracted the best things out of each and put those in a melting pot Never heard anything like them and I’m absolutely hooked for how excellently they blended a sort of industrial suite with grunge-ish post hardcore sound. And it’s not their attire that draws attention
This may sound silly, but what I like most about this song is the kick drum sound. After hearing a lot of awful metalcore in the 2000's with clicky triggered drums, it's refreshing to go back and hear a kick sound like it's supposed to--a microphone delivering the real OOMPH.
The fact that they're doing their own thing at a time when it was near mandatory to wear flannel and have long hair says a lot. They look like everyday Joes but wow can they play.
Beavis: Hey Butthead.. I think about to have a seizure ! Butthead: Cool ! Beavis: AGGHH..AHHHH...AGHHHHAAAAHAAAAAAAAA ! Buthead: Uhh huh huh hu huh huh ... That was cool !
