You should repeat the first before executing it. For example: he give order" Starboard5 and you reply: starboard5 sir then execute the order and report.

No it stay where you point it it will not turn back to midship..he just done that so that he can manage to turn the steering wheel immediately when ever there's a command.. Specially in making the ship steady
need to practice manual steering on open sea ,turn the steering wheel like driving a car, I think the vessel is in ballast condition,helsman is already tired due to right part of steering wheel is occupied by left hand
