Great job Dr Chris! My only question Is, why didn't you guys remove the barnacles? They will multiply and that makes the turtle sick. 🐢 Thank you for doing what you do.

I’m guessing because they would’ve had to take the turtles back to a wildlife rehab centre & kept the turtles there for an undetermined amount of days while they healed. From what I’ve read: While an excessive amount of barnacles aren’t good for a turtle a few isn’t so bad; they helps with camouflage after all. However, a human removing them without proper monitoring can cause loads of wounds & infection due to the sensitivity of their shells. Which is why the procedure needs to be done in the safety of a wildlife rehab centre & not done by the oceanside. In the USA the Endangered Species Act actually prevents people from removing barnacles from a turtle who don’t have a license to do so. These turtles only had a few barnacles and appeared healthy so that’s probably another reason why they had no qualms with releasing the turtles back into the ocean without removing the barnacles. Dr. Chris has been helping animals since he was a kid. He is the one with the initials (DVM). after his name. I’m sure he knows this. Perhaps it’s on the editing “floor” since that wasn’t the purpose of the outing.

I am surprised you don’t remove the barnacles at the same time. I know that was not the purpose of catching them but would it not have been beneficial to the turtle.

That’s a big debate with some people. From what I’ve read: While an excessive amount of barnacles aren’t good for a turtle a few isn’t so bad; it helps with camouflage after all. In the USA the Endangered Species Act actually prevents people from removing barnacles from a turtle who don’t have a license to do so. Best, & safest, thing is to contact a wildlife rehab centre. Then the turtle’s health can be properly monitored from beginning of the procedure until it’s fully healed and ready to be released back into the ocean. 🙂

This is amazing. I'm from Wisconsin in the US. Our families have Def been changing our ways for several yrs to be more aware of wildlife. Turtles are gorgeous. Love seeing more awareness about how to help. Way to go Chris. Such a great hero.

I love turtles. I have all my life. I'm so grateful for the efforts to save them, study them, care for them. I'm so pleased with z our hero, Dr. Chris, has had a hand in this effort. My state Florida has been of significant service in this effort. I have given money to support these efforts throughout the years however I do wish that I could be right up close and personal helping to save our world's wonderful turtles and their environment.

I don't live anywhere near the oceans, but I absolutely love turtles. All breeds of turtles are beautiful and amazing. 💕🤗🐢 But I noticed that the barnacles were left on their shells. I guess it wasn't necessary to clean them off. I would have loved to have been there to participate in that event. 🐢🐢💕💕

I currently live in the coastal SE of the US. Because of the hazards turtles face when laying eggs, and when hatching, there are laws about beach access and outdoor lighting - which can confuse hatchlings looking for the moon - at certain times of the year. There are also groups of trained volunteers who eork with scientists to check the nests when eggs are laid and moniitor the hatching to ensure they all wind up in the ocean. Everyone else is banned from interfering with the turtles, eggs, and hatchlings. Breaking that particular law will land you in jail with a huge fine.

When these wonderful people catch turtles. Do they take off the barnacles off them? Do they do more then there research on them and whats happening in the enviorment? Do they take care of some health things that turtles run into? thanks for the help on these turtles. kathleen

Just watched the episode of where Dr. Chris helps a man with a Bull mastiff who moved to China and people have not seen a breed like him and a scared of the dog who naturally affectionate by putting a pandas costume on the dog. He does have an imagination when it comes to helping some animals.
