We believe that the country’s historic battle lands should be restored as near as possible to their Civil War-era condition, so we can tell the full story of what transpired there and why they matter. If you agree, please support our newest restoration efforts at Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Seven Pines with your best gift now. bit.ly/4aQ6GbT
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

My great-great grandfather,Dennis Leary,fought at Gettysburg. He was a member of the third MD. Regiment of the Union Army of the Potomac. He survived the battle of Gettysburg,but he didn't survive the war. May GOD R.I.P. the valiant heroes of the Union and Confederate Armies during those horrible four years. And may the LORD have mercy on the destroyed families that lost fathers,sons,brothers,uncles and friends. Too tragic.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain "viewshed" when I talk to people about preserving our American history, and return historical sites to their wartime appearance/landscape. Reading interpretative signage is a good thing...but it is better when you are "looking at" what the soldiers and civilians were looking at. Interacting with a preserved site takes on a new level of significance, when you are standing where they stood, with the land around you appearing as it did then.

That's an excellent idea. Preserving history by accurately depicting it helps people remember better and share that experience with others, who hopefully will also visit the site.

What if a structure was built in 1880 or even 1910? To me, that would be a building worth saving even if it’s not part of the official Gettysburg battle. The old wood, windows, antique doors and metal craft-a shame to see it demolished.
@jackel99
@jackel99 2 месяца назад
First, the money involved may be more than the structure is worth. Secondly, to move it to another location may be cost-prohibitive. I love old houses too, it all comes down, unfortunately, to money.

The goal of the Trust is preserve and return battlefield land to what appeared like during the battle. There is always going to be a tradeoff in doing this, but, if you have been to the battlefield and understand where those young men fought, bled and died, I think you will agree it is worth it.

Is there a way to tell when/if donations are used only for specific projects or do all donations go to a "general fund" and are used as needed?

If you really want to restore the Gettysburg Battlefield , how about a rebuild of the Wentz Farm house ! And I hope you would tell the true story of Wentz's and 5 natives of Gettysburg that fought for south at Gettysburg !

In the early 60's my grandmother bought each of her grandchildren, myself and my cousins, a one square foot piece of the Gettysburg battlefield. Each of us got a deed for the one square foot plot of the battlefield which was transferred to the Gettysburg Military Park restoration. It was fun when we visited Gettysburg when mny kids were younger tell them that I used to "own" a piece of the battlefield which my grandmother transferred to the Gettysburg foundation to help preserve the battlefield. This really sparked their interest in learning more. Is there any chance you would be doing another similar project in the future? I'd like to do something similar for my kids (now grown).

This is the American Dream. Rebuilding what was once great out of the dust. Reviving a period of a struggle for freedom, equality, and justice, during this time of social havoc and government tyranny. No matter what is going on around them they will continue to build their dream, their vision for this great distraught country.

It would be neat to see the Battlefield Trust talk about ways it can support communities where they are active. I feel uneasy with the idea of tearing down homes which people occupy and putting in fields. At least, I'd like to see some commentary about what is happening to the residents and tenants. One thing I would consider is that a key part of the Gettysburg story is the local community and the people who lived there at the time of the battle. The current residents carry that legacy forward to today. Would the battlefield trust consider replacing the housing they are tearing down with new construction which better fits into the aesthetic landscape?
@jackel99
@jackel99 2 месяца назад
Why would the trust "replace a house"? The trust is trying to get the land back to what it looked like in July, 1863. Either the house is moved or torn down.
@EricJMillan
@EricJMillan 2 месяца назад
Because people need a place to live... Having a home, especially one which blends into the landscape, would be no less compatible than the monuments which cover the battlefield.
@jackel99
@jackel99 2 месяца назад
@@EricJMillan I agree with you. What about the law, which side is it on? I wouldn't think a trust could just tell you to move, so has it offered you compensation? Or, are you holding out for 10 times the value of your home? Remember, a man's home is his castle.

For the enthusiast, student, or buff it helps rebuilding the battlefields back to the 1800s. It helps bring the battles to life and with how big Gettysburg it helps big time. The men wanted us to remember what they did there and why not bring it back to how it was? I agree with this and glad it's going on. Thank you for preservation and preserving the memories that these men had there. ❤😊

This is important work. Preserving land is crucial but returning it as much as possible to its appearance at the time of the battle is also important. While at Vicksburg for the 150th I heard so many people after reading the monuments or battle descriptions say “how did they even see each other through all these trees and brush?” Because it wasn’t there or was removed at the time of the siege but it’s become so overgrown now the perspective is lost. To remove the buildings and brush is a lot of work both in research and getting done. It’s good that this is being done. I would only add or recommend that metal detectors or archeological work be a part of the equation before the machines tear up the land to save some additional history!

I am still disappointed with these guys. Back when all the Confederate statues were under attack, defaced, and destroyed, I contacted them and urged them to add their voices to those who wanted to oppose the vandals. I did so a number of times. They never responded to me and I never saw any evidence of efforts from them to protect that history. (Maybe they did so but I am unaware of it.) I was a long time member (since they were known as the (ACPWS) and was an invited speaker at one of their annual meetings. I support what they are doing, but still very saddened at what looks like a lack of spine at a moment when true courage was needed to stand up for the statues and our history. Maybe I will get over it in time, but in this case when they were needed I heard crickets from them. I have not been a member since.

I understand your diapoitment. I'm not even american yet VERY upset with some "contemporary trends" in the US. How I see: Sometimes, it's better to accept losing a finger than trying to save it and most definitely losing the hand. It's a complex environment and a delicate issue involving sponsorships, politics, public image, general support, etc., etc.

Sure tear down the house… but of course we don’t want to talk about the ten thousand pound elephant in the room… the fact that there is a serious lack of affordable housing in Gettysburg. Just ask seniors or low income residents if they care about battlefield restoration when they struggle to find an affordable place to live in the area.
