As a Licensed Vet Tech that worked critical care/ emergency at a university vet school for 15 years, I can absolutely say that The Kitten Lady knows her stuff! If you are a rescuer or just want more info on kitten health, she's the one to listen to! 👍 Thank you so much for putting these videos out for the public, you truly are a rescue kitten advocate. I will continue to tell everyone I know (laypeople and professional) about your videos. Love from Michigan! 💜🐱💜

My 2 year old cat recently had pneumonia. I thought she was going to die. I got her on antibiotics, gave her lysine every day, and set up a show cage with a vaporizer which ran continuously. There was room for her to move closer or away from it, and I left a flap open for her to get in and out. She spent most of a week in there. She would come out for awhile and then go back in whenever she had trouble breathing. She essentially managed her own respiratory care, which I thought was kinda cool.

Love this and hope she is doing much better. I had a similar situation with a terminally ill cat. I basically became her personal 24/7 hospice nurse the last 3 months of her life. She went from never having to take anything or any health issues to 3 medications twice a day and a list of other things/supplements to keep up with. I SWEAR she knew what and why I did all I did. She was a champ through it all and never fought me through any of it. They know when they are good hands :)

Seriously do what she says; my family cat Wynston died of pneumonia when I was about 10 and it destroyed us. He managed to sneak outside between my mom's legs the day a huge snow storm hit. We looked for him for two weeks before we found him snowed in our shed. He would sneeze and his whole body would react, having nasal discharge and everything. We took him to the vet the same day and he got multiple shots and an IV. It helped but he never stopped sneezing. Eventually a year later his symptoms came back, we took him to the vet and it didn't help that time... We lost him about a week later. Now that I rescue and foster kittens, it's one thing I look for and do everything I can to prevent. It's horrible

I got pneumonia around three months old after having surgery. I don't remember having it, but being that young and vulnerable definitely put me in a dangerous situation. Good thing I was already in the hospital. Of course, having the surgery made me more prone to getting the disease, but I really needed the surgery to survive.

We found a kitten a few days old. Its mother abandoned it. She moved her nest about 10ft away and wouldn't go near the kitten. So we brought him inside. We cleaned him and took him to the vet. He was estimated to be a few weeks old. We had to bottle feed him every few hours every day for a few weeks. He started developing quick and was extremely energetic, intelligent and playful. This past Sunday we noticed at night he didnt want to do much but sleep, the next morning he was back to his normal self. Later that night same thing all he wanted to do was sleep in the later evening hours. During the day he was eating and playing. He had 0 symptoms of a cold or anything else. On the next morning we took him to the vet because he did not want to move. The vet said he had pneumonia and a collapsed lung. He died a few hours later. The vet said he never saw pneumonia set in so quickly and believed there was a health issue at birth. Possibly 1 lung never developed. It made me wonder if the mom knew something was wrong and that's why she left him. I try to find peace in knowing I gave home 3 more months of life.

I rescued a kitten once with pneumonia. Our vet gave us some medicine and the poor baby was so bad we were told he needed to stay in the hospital for oxygen treatments but that wouldve been too expensive for my family. So our vet told us where to get an oxygen tank and gave us a prescription for it as well as the medicine he needed. We had a little baby mask for him and a tub that was hooked up to the oxygen tank and ofc was never completely closed in. We followed the vets directions and our little cobalt got much better and healthier. I'm not sure how he got pneumonia, he was a small stray with terrible conjunctivitis and respiratory problems as well as a few other problems when we found him. We nursed him back to health in no time though!

Stray cats with ANY severe illness, including pneumonia, usually hide and try to "sleep it off". You won't be able to find them. If you TNR, the vet visit will check for all kinds of issues, including illness. Otherwise, you generally will NOT be able to provide medical care for stray cats.

My current foster was given to me at 6 days old, with fluid in her lungs. It only took me a few minutes of holding her to recognize that bubbling sound when she breathed. I went straight from the animal charity to my vet and my worst fear was confirmed: fluid in her lungs. The prognosis was honestly pretty bleak, but she was immediately put on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia, which was my main concern. After that I spent essentially the next 5 days with her almost 24/7 and kept a very close eye on her for even the tiniest of changes. After day 5, I took her back to my vet and her lungs were given the all clear. My vet was almost as surprised as I was. Her appetite never once waned through all of this, she's one of the toughest little spuds I've ever fostered and I love her to bits. She's almost ready to go to her new home at 11 weeks and should be leaving here in a week or so. I will miss her so much but I am so happy she made it and is thriving. Pneumonia is so dangerous, especially in little kittens. Prevent it if at all possible. Thank you for the video, Hannah! There are some things here I really didn't know and it's good to know them going forward. :) Jumbo Slice is an adorable little guy, as well. So plucky!

Bonus points for managing respiratory illness and allergies- 1.change your home air filter to the highest grade you can afford. It will improve the health of everyone who lives there. 2. Reduce your heavy dust making activities- your clothes dryer can make alot of dust and create mold if it isn't hooked up to a vent properly. (This can cause illness as well as make it worse) have someone knowledgeable check your home appliances to make sure they are venting and draining properly. Consider air drying laundry during severe respiratory recovery. 3. Buy a quality air filter for the room the little one is in 4. Use a vaccum with a high quality hepa filter or use a new vacuum bag each time. Clean the floors and furniture often 5. Make everything super comfy with easy access to multiple litter boxes, water bowls/fountains, beds, pet steps to get up and down, and floor level toys. This saves their energy for healing while having a quality of life. These are just supportive suggestions that can also be useful/adapted for humans with respiratory and allergy needs

This is all such wonderful information. This will undoubtedly save a life! I wish I had known about Kitten Lady when I rescued my first kitten four years ago. The very first kitten I rescued was so, so sick- he was a seven week old ginger boy named Pocket. He had a horrific upper respiratory. And when I picked him up from the rescue, they handed me human pill bottles, the label had been peeled mostly off, but I could still read the first name. It was the woman who ran the rescues name. She told me it was a “critical care food additive” that had been prescribed by their vet of preference -a name they wouldn’t give me- and all I had to do was “squirt a syringe full over his hard food” but as it turns out, they had been stretching medications, adding them all together and making an antibiotic soup to save on veterinary care. I took him to my vet immediately. I was prescribed Vetropolycin for his eyes, and I was sent to a specialist pharmacy about an hour from where I live, which had to hand mix a medication that had been cultured specially for him. I ordered a nebulizer, but while I waited for that to come, I would take him in the bathroom, turn the shower on the hottest it could possibly get, let the steam fill the room and I would pat his chest to loosen the gunk. The vet was so appalled at the “critical care mix” and his current condition that she actually turned the rescue into the local authorities. My mom ended up adopting that sweet little baby and we renamed him Mowgli. He just turned four last month and he is the most spoiled little thing you could ever meet in your entire life. He still has underlying eye issues from that initial infection- they “run” and he gets awful eye boogies (as we lovingly call them) so he gets “groomed” which is his favorite thing, and he still lays in the bathroom when someone is getting a shower. He is kept on a very specific limited ingredient diet because we also noticed his eyes get worse when we’re less strict with his diet. It if you keep at it, there is hope- these little ones will make it. ❤️ I’m just so glad there are people like Hannah (and all of you!) in the world.

I just took on a two-week-old kitten on Tuesday. She and her brother had upper respiratory infection. They were being treated with Clavamox. She was doing so well then she started labored breathing Saturday night and not eating and by the time we could get her to an emergency vet, they determined that her situation was grave and she was euthanized. It was a kindness, in my opinion. I had pneumonia several years ago and I tell you, if euthanasia had been offered at the time to me, I would have gladly agreed to it. Pneumonia is bad bad bad.

Thank you for this video. We adopted a kitten that ended up having pneumonia (she was too feral to be handled so the rescue had no idea how sick she was). We adopted her and gave her nebulizer treatments and antibiotics. She’s relatively healthy now, but we’re always concerned when she sneezes. Unfortunately, now our pet insurance carrier refuses to cover anything that may be related to her previous infection (anything and everything they can get away with). Luckily we can cover her medical expenses, but I fear that other pet owners may opt to let future infections to go untreated in hopes of URIs falling off their pet’s list of pre-existing conditions. It’s also become a deterrent for friends who are looking to adopt when something like a URI or pneumonia may be in the cat’s recent medical history. :( Sick kittens deserve forever homes too.

The other three were symptom free. One day after listening to the lungs of the uri kitten I picked up her "healthy" sister just for comparison. Imagine my shock when the healthy kittens lungs sounded like a fire place bellows or a severe asthmatic! I rushed the whole litter to the vet. The three non symptomatic kitten had pneumonia in a bad way with no obvious symptoms. It took months of treatment, complicated by the fact that no one but me could touch them. They were the reason I learned to give sub q fluids, do injectable meds, administer vaccines and more. Amazingly they survived and eventually turned into loving cats that found forever homes. It was pure luck that I listened to the kittens lungs that day. From that point on, I routinely listen to every kittens lungs. And that habit helped me pick up on a kitten in the future. Shelter volunteers knew I had experience listening to lungs so when a kitten up for adoption was breathing hard on a very very hot day, they got me and we were thankfully able to pick up on his sudden lung collapse in time to rush him back to our vets to stabilize him.

You can also modify a human nebulizer tube you get from a normal pharmacy for a cat or kitten by blocking off one side of the mouthpiece and purrito your cat with the open end of the tube 1 to 2 inches away from their face. I know hannah uses an incubator which allows for the mist to fill the environment but one you get from your doctor as a human can work great if you hold your cat in a blanket. My siamese had really bad asthma which isn't uncommon for them and we both used the same lower dose albuterol but his dose was diluted with saline according to his vet instructions. The simply saline nasal rinse bottles squirted into the nebulizer bottle were the easiest way to dilute the albuterol. Btw, if your cat coughs like they might have a fur ball but nothing comes out or you hear a repeated huffing sound from them (usually with their neck straighted out) please take your cat to the ER! It could be a sign of an asthma or allergy attack. Hannah, could you also please cover asthma, allergies and other respiratory issues since awareness of what symptoms look like much less how to respond isn't well known. Respiratory illness does take a bit of effort but it is all worth it. My cat and i had an even closer bond since my helping save his life was paying him back for saving mine. I miss my sweet boy everyday (it was cancer) and I'm grateful for God blessing me with the nearly 14 years we had together. Thank you for this video.

Its amazing how fast a tiny kitten can go down when they are sick. I was fostering four kittens at one point and one was not well for the past day and in the a.m. I make the vet appt. Just a few hours later, before the appt. he REALLY went down fast. I RUSHED him to the vets ASAP and we almost lost him, but this story had a happy ending. But they can end up at death's door within a matter of a few hours.

I own 3 healthy cats (rescued) and today basically next to my apartment door I found a young homeless kitten(maybe 3 months old), completely malnourished with pneumonia. He was unable to move and was just lying there with saliva coming out of his mouth and occasionally moving his tail, I rushed to the closest vet and I really hope they will be able to heal the little kitten...I'm thinking he came to my doorstep cuz he knew there were other cats...he had hope, so I can't give up on him!

I got a rescue kitten from outside a few weeks ago, took him into the vet. Diagnosis was double pneumonia! He was on an oral antibiotic called amoxicillin & clavulanate potassium, for 14 days. He is doing a lot better but still sick although he runs around and eats good. I’m hoping he gets a lot better as the months go on. He sure is a fighter! Anyone have any suggestions or anything for this?

I just lost one of my rescue fosters to URI/pneumonia last week. He was not a neonate, nor had he shown any symptoms of being sick until two days before passing. He went from normal kitten to very sick in a few days. We had him tested for FIV/FELV, which was negative and had him on antibiotics as soon as we noticed, but by that point he had stopped eating. If you have a cat or kitten that is shy/hiding and have concerns about their health, please keep them where you can monitor them often. Our current fosters were barn cats and he was the last one we'd gotten to socialize with us. :( I've fostered and rescued cats for years and this was a first for me.

My mom walked in as the video started and I paused it with Jumbo on the screen. "That looks like Sleepy," she said. Sleepy is the name of the foster kitten my sister took in. It had ringworm, so I'm looking forward to the video on ringworm you plan on doing in case any future fosters my sister has also have it.

So that's what the breathing thing I had to use when I was little is called. I had reallyyy bad asthma when I was little so I had to use a nubulizer once or twice a day or else I would have trouble breathing and have some other issues.

I know what you mean. I had Broccoli Pneumonia when I was 19. I was lucky in that Mom took me to the doctor as I was unable to speak. The doctor said that the Broccoli Pneumonia that I had was in my throat which was the reason I could not talk as my voice box was swollen and in the upper part of my lungs. I had to take 5 bottles of medications one after the other until the medication was all gone. The doctor said to return if I got worse or that I was still sick even after taking the medication. Mom and I had gone to the doctor at the rural hospital on Saturday and Mom asked if I could have waited until Monday. The doctor said by the time I would have seen him on Monday that the Broccoli Pneumonia would have taken over both of my lungs and that I would have been put in an oxygen tent in order for me to breathe while getting more medication through an IV.

Dearest Hannah, thank you so much for your amazing video with such detailed information. My stray kitten caught a nasty case of pneumonia. She was so ill. We brought her home from the vet with antibiotics and followed your instructions for using a nebulizer and doing coupage. When my bf was picking up a nebulizer from the pharmacy, I texted him in the middle of watching your video saying, kitten lady says we need saline , please get some! With your help, my baby is slowly recovering and back to eating food. And thanks for the tip about chicken baby food! She loves it!

Today a friend told me that her mum had seen a kitten near the street where I live, so my sister and I went to look for it, but we couldn't find it. I hope that's just because someone else who has some experience took it or maybe there was a mum and she took it somewhere else, but I'm still kinda worried.

Our second young cat that we found outside had a horrible respiratory infection. I rushed him to the vet because he was having such a hard time breathing. He would shoot snot out of his nose! He was also so thin because he was definitely not born an outside cat. But 2 years later he is doing well.
