Helping my partner on a big one

This is my partner's first big cedar. I came over to give him a hand. The tree is a true 15 foot diameter tree. We lucked out on it, as it was hollow in the middle and was pretty easy to cut down, other than wanting to pinch in the undercut and having to make a double window to reach all the holding that was keeping it up. Enjoy, I am sure this is one of the biggest trees you'll see on youtube being felled.

OK People fail to realize that harvesting forests doesn't release carbon into the atmosphere, it stays in the wood. There are people who think letting the wood die and rot is better, no not so. Rotting wood uses up oxygen and releases its carbon back into the environment. Harvesting forests that are slowing down their rate of carbon absorption and replacing it with many more younger healthy trees that absorb carbon and make o2 at a much faster is a good thing in my mind; while keeping in mind that the wood that gets harvested retains it carbon long as it isn't burnt or broke down in some sort of way. We have saved more trees like the one in this video than one man can possible see in his lifetime. And all you people who google earth thinking all the forests are wiped out, that is a new young healthy more diverse forest taking its place. Even green peace leaves us alone for pete's sake. This is not killing whales, poisoning water or polluting, this is the cleanest most natural resource possible.

***** "harvested retains it carbon long as it isn't burnt or broke down in some sort of way."So you dont break these down any sort of way? What, you chop them and leave them? Or sell them to logging companies... Caught your bullshit real fast. Stupid.
@canadiancarguy
@canadiancarguy 9 лет назад
Chopping them up and milling them does not release carbon. You can turn the whole thing into sawdust and it still retains its carbon. As long as you keep wood as wood it stays in there. The carbon will make its way out of there anyways eventually, keeping it in the wood for a few more years is not going to make a difference in the long run.

I've felled trees before, because I wanted to experience the work and see what it was like and what it entailed. I can confirm that it is not a safe job, it is not a clean job, it will make mincemeat out of your forearms, your hams, and your back, and anything that goes wrong on the job can easily kill someone. I wouldn't even know where to start on a tree like that. Great job.

Stephen B. cutting down a almost dead tree yeah. making room for new trees. thats how it works. often big trees cast a shadow on the ground which makes it impossible for other trees to grow, so a "beautiful" dead tree isnt better than a new little tree. thats also better for the eviroment.

ok you people are not getting the whole picture. what we are doing is sustainable logging. meaning we plant the forest back for future harvest and wildlife habitat. if you eat Doritos kraft dinner Hawkins cheeses and pretty much anything else with fake powdered cheese flavour you are contributing to the largest scale of deforestation ever. miles upon miles of palm oil plantations takes hours to fly over in a small plane that all used to be jungle rainforest hundreds of species gone extinct and for what. so you guys can sit at the keyboard and get fat and type your two cents about a couple guys cutting a dead tree down even though you have zero clue about how things are being done.

there's nothing 'sustainable' about forestry, or silviculture in general. There's only more 'efficient' ways of harvesting. Even the Canadian government abandoned the idea of "Forests Forever" after they realized how far up shit-creek they were.
@MrLioncash
@MrLioncash 7 лет назад
I agree, palm oil is terrible, it should be banned. They cut down miles of forests to grow the shit. The problem is this isn't sustainable. period. There is no sustainability in it anywhere, you could plant a thousand trees, it makes no difference, we burn all that wood you cut down all that energy it's keeping is released into the atmosphere, you've then got trees that are 1% of the efficiency of a fully grown aged tree, attempting to then clean all of that energy you released back out of the atmosphere? Feels like stabbing yourself in the lungs whilest you're grabbing for a breath of fresh air.. The sad thing is, this is just palm oil, I spent two years in Portugal, they turned the whole country into fucking eucalyptus..... for toilette paper... people give more of a shit about wiping their ass than helping the planet live longer... it's madness.

Respect guys. I am an arborist from the UK, I wish we had trees like that in England. Maximum respect. Glad to see you are wearing some PPE as well. One of my major gripes with the Canadian and US videos of tree work is hardly any of you wear PPE, except some budget tin hat... No ear protection, eye protection, chainsaw trousers. So respect for doing tree work and wearing the correct PPE. You guys have got the best trees but some of youre tree workers look like absolute nutters coz of lack of safety precautions. Heard all the excuses, you wont be able to make any of them when you are deaf.... or dead... at forty years old because you are too cool to wear the safety kit that could save your life. If you want to see the best tree surgeon in the world, (IMO) feller, and general boss of tree work, check out Reg Coates. That man is the don of tree work. Well done again guys. As for the arguments about felling trees. Felling trees is not the problem it is the solution! If we fell trees and replant, use the timber produced sustainably, use high efficiency wood burning stoves like the swedish and norwegians manufacture and use, which produce 1gram of co2 compared to 30grams with same quantity of wood in an older inefficent stove. Make timber a bigger part of our home heating systems world wide, we could stop digging up coal and oil releasing carbon locked up for millennia. Turn global warming on its head and actually use this sustainable and vital resource to its full potential. Plant more trees, everywhere. Trees keep us alive and are vital habitat for a plethora of wildlife. I genuinely value trees more than most people. Too many people, not enough trees. Timber should be a part of our culture, our history and our future. Sadly, currently it is not a big enough deal for people. By the time i have kids and they have kids it will all be academic. Big mistake voting in the donald in the US.... he lines his pockets by helping out his dear friends in the oil industry and ramps up destruction of the planet at the same time. Got to help out those oil companies... they are struggling for cash and are so morally up standing and care so much about the planet and people. Got I hate fat cat businessmen and the bullshit they act out to keep the status quo maintained. Many have said this but it gets truer by the day. "When will humanity wake up and realise that we cant eat money?" I fear the answer to that is never/ too late. Rant over. Read book "Norwegian Wood". Everyone. Read it. :-) James Long

Caught the back of the tip on a small windfall while cutting a back cut and the chain bit in and the tip walked around and flipped the saw out of his hands and it cut through his safety pants and forearm into the bones. He seen he cut his pants and went back to work pissed off and then realized he had cut his arm when his hand wasn't working right and sleave was turning red and dripping blood. I see more and more negative comments about how we are killing this and wrecking that and how once its gone it is gone forever, but people are failing to realize what happens when ALL the precious metals are mined? What happens when all the fossil fuels are gone? What will be the new gold?? You guessed it; TREES!! So why wouldn't we ensure that our forests stay healthy and care for it for generations to come? In as little as 20 years there might not be anymore gold to mine, in 50 to 100 years we might not have anymore fossil fuels. What is also sad is there might not be anymore natural drinkable water in another 50 years fresh drinkable water is already less than 1% of the earth's total water volume. Mining and fracking are going to take care of that, maybe some of the people here should focus their energy on those guys, not the forest industry. Forestry is forever, mining is not....
@serbianserb3554
@serbianserb3554 9 лет назад
We don't breathe metal, but oxigen made by trees that are cut daily but planted yearley. If you plant a tree for every tree you cut then its ok. Water is renewable. And think about what you'v said, mining wont last forever, but material will, it can not be destroyed, it will only be in another form, it wont be raw ore, but train rails, old cars, broken metal things etc...
@anthonyyantha7046
@anthonyyantha7046 9 лет назад
Trees are also renewable. They can also be planted daily. Sure, they may take 100 years to grow, but that's when you take care of the rest of the forest and then come back.
@serbianserb3554
@serbianserb3554 9 лет назад
***** It's not renewable if nobody plant them. Wood cuting companies do not plant trees, that is done by forest owner which want to cut trees to get space to build or plant some argicultural plants. Small amount of forests are reforested, and those who are, are planted on big plantations where are sprayed with all kinds of chemicals becouse they pland one sort of tree on 100 acres and its very easy for bugs to eat all the trees. So, what is left is about 5% or less that is replanted
@canadiancarguy
@canadiancarguy 9 лет назад
Данијел Томић That might be how things work where you are from. Around here it is law to reforest, unless it is private lands, but if they are registered woodlands they must be replanted. No chemicals here, and we plant back what we take. More than 10 trees planted for each one taken

You are ignorant. Theres plenty of second growth and smaller trees to cut. Theres no need to kill giant trees like that. Thats a pathetic excuse. People here arent "moaning because a tree is cut" they are moaning because those 2 guys destroyed something that was hundreds, possibly over a thousand years old and is incredible and there arent many of them left. This is stupid. And not only because it is glorious tree. Timber just like a corpses produces poisonous chemicals which have an adverse effect on our health. In Russia in past, houses made of timber used to stay 100 years empty and only after 100 years people would move in. Today's timber products is being processed with polish and other chemicals.( i mean furniture) Add to this poison( which is assumed to be very toxic) dead wood produces and you ll get very good reason for cancer. Cutting this tree is awful. And i won't believe this tree was long dead. The major fake excuse being exploited.

What are you talking about??? This was the second time this place was harvested. This block is already green with saplings growing nice and healthy. We do not DEFOREST we put more back than we take. There is only 15% less forest today than when North America was first settled. I think that is amazing, considering how much America is developed. This block might not see giant trees while we are logging, but by logging the same places again and again we are saving other untouched parcels of virgin old growth stands from being logged.

+Thearmorcav You might direct your righteous indignation at the people who turn Amazon rainforest into grazing land, or who regularly burn huge areas in Indonesia (with major air-quality impact on the region). The long-term trend in much of North America is developed land reverting to forest. Selective cutting with horses/mules is also gaining ground, for trees much smaller than the giant cedar here.

Moose Craft So fast? How old was that tree? I've cut down hundreds of trees in my day and I've planted thousands as well. The trees forming the timber frame holding up the home i live in and most of the boards as well, came from trees I cut down on this land. And after I planted the trees which can be sawed by my kids for their homes or my grandkids. Ignorant? My point is how fast we can take from the earth, how long it takes to give something back. Human society can make a good living without harvesting the oldest trees still remaining on this planet, their are few of them left. More than 99% of original forest has been cut where I live. Is it so crazy to suggest we leave something ancient for our children to see, use and experience? What if your parents had cut all the old groves -would you mind if the only trees you had access to were dwarfs of this massive tree you're cutting down in this video? Peace, Ben

This is an awesome Vid and I and I'm sure many others thank you very much for taking the time to capture and post it. It's a real insight to something few people get to see. Forget about the whingers and other twits and their brainwashed comments. It's real easy to take the highroad on the internet but rarely does the practice and reality match the attitude. I'll be every one of the people bitching about using wood has as much or more of it in their home than anyone else and does nothing to conserve it as they preach everyone else should do. Stuff the shiny arse green washed whingers, They wouldn't last 10 sec doing what you do or know what a real days work is. Very good point and well explained. It's obvious that people don't understand what goes into sustaining a forest. I have state land that borders my land and for the most part it's forest. Year after year I see more & more trees prematurely dying do to an insect. It's gotten so bad that the insect is now killing my trees! And yes I had to cut down the infected trees and a few tree around them so it would not decimate my area. I wanted to let you know there are people who stand behind & with you.

@Temater

it was most likely rotting, as written above it was hollow inside, and better to use the still workable and good wood instead of letting it rot away and give other healthier trees the possibility to grow.

Of course nothing goes to waste and also some species only live in Old-Growth Forest but some foresters only see the money they will do with their cuts. Biodiversity need also ''almost dead trees'' to maintain some species. But what is an almost dead trees when it's 800-950 years for a forester who just see the money he will get at the end! They lie to us! They are corrupted mindset! How about some studies at University of British Columbia from real ecologist: “All the trees in the forest are connected below ground. They behave like communities,” Simard says. “They’re a forest, not just a bunch of trees.” But foresters who cut forest for money don't really care about the complexity of forest ecosystems, they just see the tree to cut, not the complexity of interactions to maintain an ecological sustainability.

I completely understand the need for lumber, but to cut down such an enormous tree is not good stewardship. This tree could be as old as 900. Anything that's been here that long deserves to stay exactly where it is. There's plenty of other forms of lumber.
@canadiancarguy
@canadiancarguy 10 лет назад
This tree had no real economic value in it. Read the comments, we left many more like this that were still healthy. We have strict regulations to remove any danger trees that pose a threat and do not have good wildlife tree characteristics. This tree was left from the first time this block was harvested. Since then the tree had died and there was a broken top from another tree that had broken off and was hanging in the candelabra limbs.
@dieselphiend

***** It's not about just this tree. It's about all of the enormous, old growth cedars that are cut down in your region every year.
@canadiancarguy
@canadiancarguy 10 лет назад
dieselphiend Google Great Bear Rainforest and look how large this 1 single park is. 64000 square km in 1 park with more projected to be added in the future. This is the largest undeveloped temperate rainforest in the world. The trees average 350 to 1000 years old. We have many many more parks and reserves like this set aside never to be touched. I would be more worried about the oil sands and fracking going on, that is killing the earth, not logging.
@betatester03

***** You should definitely add that comment to the description. People can't even begin to appreciate the difficulty and danger involved in that cut because they're hung up on their ignorance of the reasons why it had to be done.

That is where you need to come back to reality. What does stewardship have to do with an old tree being left alone because its an old tree? Do older trees produce prettier bigger better trees than younger trees? Do all the other trees look up to the big tree? To keep growing morale high among the nearest trees do we need to leave a few big ones in their midst? Sounds like you might have great understanding of the logic in the tree kingdom. I decree we need to worship you because of your vast knowledge assemble all of the other liberal democrat friends of your so we may fell a tree on oops I mean worship you and enjoy your vast knowledge daily.

I think deforestation is sad...Fracking for petroleum products is sad...Overfishing and polluting the oceans is sad....Overpackaging with plastics is sad....Using pesticides and fertilizers is sad...In the future more and more of the world's O2 production is going to come from forests versus the ocean, we are actually helping the earth out a little by planting younger o2 producing forests. Francois Couturier New Brunswick is approximately 72,000 square km, The largest unlogged old growth park is 32,000 square km with a projected expansion to become a total of 64,000 square km of unlogged virgin temperate rainforest, the largest of its kind in the world. That is just one park, we have many, many more parcels of virgin forest never to be logged. These trees are not endangered by any means, but even we see the historic value these trees have, blocks are being layed out to preserve as many of these monument trees as possible. We are not perfect by any means, but we are learning from our mistakes. It is easy to get the wrong impression from a 4 minute video.

This was every day logging for Weyerhauser back in the sixties. Point of fact is that these northwest firs and cedars only live for about 900 years and then they die, rot and blow over. One company waited 60 years more than the rest and had a lot of defect in the timber when they finally logged it. Makes you wonder what happened 900 years ago to produce that uniform old growth. I just wish they would never die they are so beautiful. One consolation, the trees I planted forty years ago are now big enough to be beautiful, straight and tall 100-footers. Sincerely, David Parker
