Oh we got ourselves another BEACHED WHALE HYBRID on the lot.
This 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid was towed in from FLORIDA!!
But it's originally from Southern California xD
Customer got quoted over 7 GRAND at the Toyota Dealership, and decided it was worth shipping it to PHAD for a proper diagnosis and hopefully a reasonable repair.
Let's see what is going on with this Helpless Hybrid... at the moment it's completely DEAD IN THE WATER.

Lead free stamped on the circuit board means the solder connections are susceptible to tin whisker and dendritic growth. A little moisture combined with a voltage potential between 2 pins is all it takes. Military electronics require at least 10% lead solder.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis Год назад
Lead based solder doesn't prevent water ingress or corrosion.
@cbayman869
@cbayman869 Год назад
Tim lead solder does not mitigate moisture ingress conformal coatings are used to protect circuits from moisture but no conformal coating is perfectly hermetic so moisture wicks onto the PCB surface. Connector pins are more likely to be impacted because they are exposed to the mechanic stress the external connector is subjected to. Lead free solder is more susceptible to conditions that promote dendritic growth not only because of material properties but also due to the way the alloy solidifies during the solder process. This leaves lead free solder alloys surfaces more susceptible to corrosion vs tin lead alloys which are eutectic.

and why it's insane people think putting phones in rice actually helps them... as the phone sits there in a rice bath unable to disconnect its battery as all the micro lines fizzle and fizzle and fizzle as the rice just taps its finger and the normal slow process of evaporation eliminates some water... only thing saving a phone is immediately opening it and disconnecting the battery... next possible is hitting it with heat gun or hair dryer to speed up evaporation process... rice? how r people this dumb...

A lesson I learned back in the 80s the applies to modern electric vehicles. I had just purchased a $150 RC dune buggy and was impressed at how fast it was! It was a clear day but had rained the night before leaving a few puddles. While scooting around the street I plowed through a puddle and waaaaaa, buggy stopped immediately! I mean dead! Zip-nada- nothing! I dried it out and still zilch! Checked the battery to find it had power and the leads to the motor were at full voltage. The motor was toast! The replacement motor cost me $80! I ran fine after installing the new motor and I never used the bandit where there was moisture present again! Water and electronics do NOT mix! Same applies all these years later only the lesson is vastly more expensive! Unless these manufacturers seal the entire system to water intrusion they are subject to a similar fate! And while gas powered vehicles are not immune to water damage I believe they are far more resilient (so says my 98 Jeep Wrangler😂)! The more electronic connections a vehicle has, the higher it's chances of failure due to moisture intrusion. I watch footage of the Willys Jeeps that fought in WWll blasting through waist deep water and mud with 6 GIs holding on for dear life and think if they had the electrical crap the vehicles of today have, we would have lost that war! Your channel rocks, Ivan! 👍

Traxxas Bandit? That RC Car was my best friend as a kid, I lived with the thing, brought it everywhere, used it just about every day for years and loved tearing it down for maintenance and upgrades. Everything was fixable too. One day I was flying across a parking lot and wasn't quite looking at how far away it was, smashed into the wheel of the only vehicle in the parking lot at full speed and demolished it, it broke in half. I was devastated... But I was able to buy every part I needed to fix it up good as new!

I don't think I would be too keen to mess around with the sense wires pig tail. Well not without knowing the set up, like is there any kind of circuitry to limit current on each cell wire. I should image that each cell is capable of delivering a whole ton of amps. I would be careful probing and messing with them, especially with all that bare steel around them. And if they are current limited by a resistor or some fancy circuitry inside the battery pack itself, one must wonder if that survived without blowing open circuit. Take care Ivan, we don't want any unscheduled welding or fire starting!
@tedmoss

The battery is divided in half by the safety plug. As far as I know, having taken apart only one, there is no other protection, the wires are directly connected to the cells.

We have a 2007 Camry Hybrid and finally had to replace the battery in the trunk in February of this year. The battery was a Panasonic and it was manufactured in October 2006 - we bought the car new in December 2006. That means the battery lasted about 17 years. The Walmart Ever Start battery is not the right kind of battery for this kind of car. The traction battery, on the other hand, lasted until June of 2018, about 12 years. Got it from NAPA for about 1800 after the core charge was returned. When the traction battery went, the car was still drivable on just the engine but complained a lot on the dash display. It was almost like the trunk battery was starting the engine.

What seems to happen with inexperienced people that don't understand the electronic world sometimes believes the person diagnosing the problem caused the problem. Once you filled up their new auction car with burning electronics smell, they probably wont call you back. They like to blame and pretend that you were the cause of the reason why you were called there in the first place. It's that old "It was working before you touched it" mentality. I had that recently when I was outfitting a brand new house with outlets and switches and had one breaker tripping from a short to ground. The builder told me "My master electrician roughed in this house so it must have been something you hooked up wrong or backwards". I went to convincing him he has to remove cabinetry and drywall so I could inspect the wire. He had done so and said "I checked every inch of that wire and found nothing wrong with it" and tried pushing back on me like I wired it wrong. I found a staple driven into the wire about 2" under a box which proves it was done when the electrician was roughing it in. I was only sent there to finish it out and get everything working for inspection. Diagnostics can sometimes lead to spooky outcomes when you have to break the news to the customer or client. Thanks again.

So few people understand these cars, and also EVs. I bought a Smart EV six years ago for pennies on the dollar because it was "dead". All that was wrong with it was the 12 volt battery wouldn't hold a charge and therefore failed to initialize the car after sitting a few hours! $200 later and I've had a fully functioning and trouble-free EV since. And one thing about hybrids I don't like is, if the electric drive section fails or something goes awry in the hybrid control, why can't the car default to ICE-only operation? You would think, especially with this "parallel" design, they could have engineered a fail-safe mode to at least let you drive the car.

After we got it home, I pulled the cover off the spare tire compartment... it smelled SO BAD ... and there were two inches of muddy water in there. Further panicked exploring showed no sign of water/flooding anywhere else. The dealer investigated. When they bought it, the cargo area was just full of mud, and the kid assigned to clean it got frustrated that the carpet cleaner was taking too long, so he used a pressure washer on the interior ("That's a bold move, Cotton") to clean the mud out of the back, then the carpet cleaner to extract the water out of the carpet, and fans for a couple days to dry it out. It never occurred to him that the pressure washer would flood the spare tire well. Cleaned out out, dried it out, disinfectant to kill the smell, and never had another problem.

In most cases it gives the mechanic time to schedule the vehicle in at a time when he/she can spend time on iit instead of parking it in the corner till time is available. In most cases the mechanic can spend time to actually repair the vehicles that are repairable on the day and get paid for those vehicles! Rant over!

To push a charge you need 14.5-15v. 13.4 is a “float voltage”, 13.5 isn’t enough to charge from death.

The pitfalls of Hybrids. I don't have a ton of experience with them, but I do know the 1st gen Escape hybrids must have a good main battery, with somewhere in the neighborhood of at least 30% charge, or the main engine will not start. They used the battery pack to run the starter...

The 12V batteries in Toyota Hybrids are suppose to be AGM and are not suppose to be charged at a high rate.

Ouch! Methinks those wires have soot on them. It was close to burning down! Are there fuses between the battery cells and that plug going to the sensor board?
