Just a couple of notes: it's the second edition of Bratislava Fecht after Covid. They had one as well last year in July again with LSO, LSW and LSA categories. Last year they tried a Blow-Afterblow ruleset in the Advanced categories with deep targets being 2 p. and shallow targets 1 p. No RoW but doubles were 0-0. It run longer and messier than expected so they went with their usual Vor ruleset this year. The LSO and LSW tournaments started from 8:30 till 12:30 and the Advanced from 13:00 till 15:30. Matches and turn around time was extremely quick.

I got eliminated by Lubomír in the 3rd round. Yes, his leg cuts do hurt 😁. You did great job in pronouncing the names!

It's kinda crazy to me to see the difference between the video and the actual thing. What you really can't tell here is how fast and intense these guys fence, while still beeing relatively crisp and fast in recovery. My favorite fight of the day was Martin Vrabel against Ondrej Hercik in the elims.

Hello, A few notes for my part. The ROW rule does not fact not stop at the first clash - provided it is direct, the riposte is given priority over the remise. In general at Bratislava Fecht this year priority calls were used quite sparingly. As regards the judging, we use a 1+1 system (head judge and line judge) with two video judges. The video review is generally only used on a fencer's challenge. We find that this approach keeps things moving at a good pace, it let us go through all three categories before 3:30 PM this year which is quite fast. Nice to hear a new set of opinions on it :)

Lubomir is primarily a sword+buckler fencer, that might explain his more "classical orthodox" stance :) Also, from personal experience, he gave me one of my most challenging fights, as he was able to attack the hands from all sorts of unexpected angles, as I found out :D

Most if not all blosfechten tournaments in Czechia and Slovakia prohibit grapple which is possibly quite different from the US scene. You discuss the missed grapple opportunity around minute 47 and I feel this might help you understand some decisions those fencers went through.

honestly, the bronze match felt rushed, as if to meet the promised timeline. Being there, seeing the video and knowing the rules they used, it seems to be 5:3 for Medvid. in the end, even he has had enough and you can see him going to tell the judges that he received a valid hit to the hand (that even you from this angle noticed). without hella good reason, dismissing identical opinions of both fencers is not very cool in pools, and this was a winning point in a medal match...

18:00 I believe that guard is called Shrankhut or Barrier Guard in English.

As a static guard I could see that but as an action I think krump describes it better

11:13 is where they finally stop talking about HEMA RATINGS and the bracket and get into actual fencing, JC!

1 handed should be fully disallowed, they are garbage fencing, I don't care to fence you after that. that garbage will ultimately be the downfall of LS fencing.

show me on a doll where did the one handed strike hurt you?

What are you talking about? One handed longsword techniques are in the sources. Having fenced some of the guys in this tournament, I can tell you that being hit by those one-handed leg snipes is no joke - they would almost certainly be fight ending without leg protection. Having looked at some of the videos on your own channel, I can offer that what they are doing here is not so different than the techniques you are using - these guys are some of the best in the world, and they are just doing those techniques (and the decision-making behind the techniques) much faster than you are used to seeing, as well as generating a lot more force and being more committed at the correct moments. This is not garbage fencing at all - I would invite you to watch again, this time with more of a focus on trying to understand what these fencers are doing well, and adding something to your own fencing toolkit.

@@AngryArchaeologist To be honest, the 1H stuff and injuries I've seen from it in tournaments where it should have been banned have ruined it for me, I'm not even interested in fencing longsword much. It hits with a lot of force, that is true, it is in a manual, that is true too, but that does not mean it on the same level as a well executed cut with structure behind it. Flat hits hard, but does not mean it cuts. I am being harsh when I call their fencing garbage, my fencing is garbage, I have no right to call out theirs. However, I maintain my point that 1H cuts and thrusts with the off hand only on the handle are the downfall of LS fencing. There will never be Art in fencing with those being prevalent.

@@mikajlod25 The Art of Dodging, Timing, Proper Setup, Evasion, Baiting, Distance Control would all beg to disagree, sounds like a skill issue to me that instead of dealing with you point towards the technique

21:50 Again, boo, boo that, it's not good, if you are throwing away your stance and structure to guard against a inferior threat, that's not good, that should be discouraged not praised. I'm just gonna say it again, 1H crap will be the death of the Art of Fencing
