Triads are the topic of today’s video. This is something that ALL intermediate guitar players should learn in their journey from an intermediate to advanced level of guitar playing. Why? Because not only are triads an incredibly useful tool for lead playing, they are equally useful for making your RHYTHM playing sound so much more interesting!
In this lesson, I explain to you what a ‘1st inversion major triad’ is and how you can combine it with major barre chords to get a bit more creative with your rhythm playing and add a bit of life to basic chord progressions.
I do this by taking you through the first four bars of a rhythm playing etude I composed recently. This etude was inspired by the opening to the Hendrix classic ‘Bold as Love’ and shares the same four chords played in the intro of that song.
These first four bars should act as a nice introduction to combining major barre chords with triad shapes for those of you who are new to the concept of triads.
If you enjoyed learning the first four bars and would like to learn the etude in full with downloadable TAB files and a video breakdown, you can find exactly that in the EXTRAS section of my instructional website - bulletproofgui...
In addition to a breakdown of the etude, I have created 6 BONUS exercises for practicing the combination of major barre chords and 1st inversion major triads.
These exercises will be helpful to those of you who might not feel technically ready to learn the entire etude and would perhaps benefit from practicing some easier exercises to begin with.
Subscribing to bulletproofguitarplayer.com gives you full access to ALL SITE CONTENT, including Parts 1 & 2 of my original Bulletproof Guitar Player courses.
If your knowledge of fundamental music theory is lacking, or you’re a COMPLETE beginner when it comes to theory, you will absolutely benefit from studying the material found in Part 1 - Master the Fretboard. Triads - and many other concepts - are covered in much more depth in that course and you will learn how and when to use them in your lead and rhythm playing.

Now these are the types of lessons I like. I much prefer it when the instructor is speaking of chord names, inversions, intervals, etc so it can be applied in various places on the fretboard as opposed to the teachers who just tell you what fret and string to place your fingers on. You just earned yourself a new subscriber to your channel. Will have to check out your website as well.

I prefer to pick up a few licks instead of the yaptty yap yap. If I want to learn technicalities, I will join a classical guitar school. You can best believe Hendrix didn't care about yapty yap.

You're a really good teacher Ross, I like the way you play it and then come back and play it a little slower while at the same time showing the TAB of what you are playing - Thank you very much for sharing this info sir!

What really helps me with understanding triads and how to use them while improvising is knowing which major and minor pentatonic shapes are lying underneath and next the chords of the chord progression I'm playing.

God bless you in Jesus Christ name amen

Hendrix played barre chords with thumb and muted A string so he could instantly move from rhythm to lead and back again. He had no rhythm guitar backup. Great lesson. Thanks. I'm going to switch my guitar neck to a lefty neck, so my low E string will have the most play in it, just like the Master knew...

Jesus Christ loves you and He will save us from our sin if we put our faith and trust in Him! we all sinned and fell short of Gods perfect glory (romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is eternal death! (romans 6:23) but the gift of God is this john 3:16-21: “for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” and romans 10:9-13: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” so God is coming at a time we least expect, and if we put our faith and trust in Him He will gift us His grace and clothe us with the righteousness of His blood (but of course death could not hold Him, He is risen!) and we will have eternal life in His kingdom where there will be there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves you so much! (romans 5:6-8) but if we deny and reject Him and don't repent from our sins to follow God, then we will have our part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. because no liar, no thief, no blasphemer (using Gods name in vain as a cuss word to express anger or disgust) and no adulterer (Jesus Christ says in matthew 5 that anyone who just looks at someone to lust for they’re an adultery at heart) will enter the kingdom of heaven. so hear these words, repent and believe the gospel! accept Jesus Christ and confess your sins to Him so that He will forgive you and save you from hell where the fire will never be quenched and give you a life with truth, love, joy, and peace in His kingdom instead which will never fade away or perish. this is all if you haven't done this yet and Jesus Christ hasn't saved you yet, God bless you! 🙌👑💟

Thank you, Ross. This is the type of content that made me subscribe in the first place. It is immediately accessible and understandable to a hack like me, and something we can all put into practice right now, regardless of skill level. But you include enough music theory and nomenclature to keep us all honest, and stretch those of us with less exposure to the more technical side. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
