Is a plexi a jtm45 or is it a general term for Marshall 60s amps? I’ve been looking for an amp to upgrade and I think a Marshall is what I’m looking for
@@Hillelfan02 When people talk about late 60s Marshall "Plexi" they are referring to the Marshall 100w Super Lead. There is also a very rare 50w version of the Super Lead called the JTM50 or "Black Flag Plexi" that looks exactly like a late JTM45. It looks like the JTM50 is what James is playing in the video. So yeeeaaahh... if you are ever lucky enough to find a '66 Black Flag Plexi in good playable condition, expect to pay anywhere between US$7000 - 10000. Oh and 1966 Fuzz Faces with the Red Dot NKTs start from $2000 and then up (and there's no guarantee it will even be a "good" one or that the resistors haven't mis-biased over the years)
I really like your approach. It gave me a working knowledge how these devices sound in the real world. I wasn't going to watch the whole presentation but got pulled in.
Cool! Thanks for this James Santiago. I'll add that I only realized, when watching Jimi in footage from Fillmore/Band of Gypsies/Machine Gun, how close to the bridge he would tend to pick when on the neck pickup selection, and I find that really can help for avoiding the tubby square wave sound that can result with neck pickups and fuzz, including the fuzz face.
This is an amazing video every Fuzz Face neophyte should watch. To the point, precise, great tone… As for most of us mortals not having a cranked Plexi at our disposal: putting an OD in breakup mode downstream of the fuzz, and into a clean amp, seems to do the trick nicely enough.
I’ve always avoided the strat and the fuzz thing, but I’m starting to build some confidence on my strat type guitar and my first FF is on the way, thanks for the tips. You have a great touch, and obviously know your sht thx 🙏 🤠✌️
Really nice James! I heard Eric and Jimi clearly in your tone and playing. Outstanding demo! I wish you were in Houston so I could hear you play live. Now I've gotta find those pedals! Cheers - Luther
James, I always enjoyed your videos for Voodoo Lab so it was a pleasant surprise to find your channel just now. One request: make more videos! :-) I love your tone and style.
Dude your tone is great very nice sounding sound. congrats. Over time most guitarists figure out that its about the minimal. 1 pedal and good control of the guitar strings and tone / volume knobs.
I have the MRX classic 108 mini. It's basically the same circuit as that light blue, silicon Hendrix fuzz face with a buffer button to make it play nice with other pedals or humbuckers...especially wah pedals or anything in front of it. The button also brightens the tone a bit, but for turning down the fuzz quite a bit, it reintroduces the highs, which is good for getting mellower overdrive tones from it. I'll probably eventually buy the the darker blue silicon fuzz face mini. That one will give you the Pink Floyd - Time solo sound. Dunlop owns MXR ,Way Huge Pedals, and the official Fuzz Face branding , so, yeah...
This is how you should show a vintage fuzz and teach how to use it. Indeed tightrope is 80% Fuzz face (germanium) and a tiny bit of the Roger Mayer Octavia (grey rocket shape), im not sure if SRV had the TS9 ON but the sound in the solo's is the sickest and most brutal I've ever heard, and this guys is completely right you see Stevie rolling down the volume to sing and clean the guitar, when the solo comes he cranks the guitar volume and hell is loose. It's such and Epic performance. By the way with that FF pedal you dont need much more to make stand on the stage it sounds amazing.
I read the Guitar Player pedalboard issue back in the day, and it was interesting to read about how different guitarists used pedals for unique sounds. Do you have other companion videos for that article? Thanks!
I have a question and I really need some help with this. My question is... is it enough to have a buffer pedal or two (my boss reverb and tremolo) at the end of my chain to prevent any clarity loss even if there are other pedals in front of the buffer chain? In this case does the boss buffer work even if there are other pedals enabled in front of the boss pedals, or does it only boost the signal for the pedal that is enabled and everything in front of it does not get a buffer? I really have issues to run a boss pedal at the beginning of my chain because it completely messes up my fuzz pedal and distortion pedal because of the impedance and buffer function. I would like to have a buffer pedal at the beginning of my pedal board but is it necessary to have a buffer pedal at the start even if you have a buffer pedal at the end? thanks for any help!
Boy I really enjoy your videos. Some of the very best on the web. I wonder if you could explain what kind of pick ups are using and why you're not getting loads of noise no single coil pickups? Thank you :-)
Are you plugging your pedals directly into the amp like a send and return jack? Or do you have it like amp to pedals to guitar? My fuzz makes and incredible hissing noise and doesn't sound like yours and i have the blue hendrix signature one that you have.
Strangely so much few comments out there?! Great demo with so awesome gear! I envy you .. But the headroom volume for that amp are too hi for my ( and much people's) house..
hi James excellent tone it is possible to make a fuzz face sound like this or similar in a fender hot rod deville 212, which settings should you use, thanks for your knowledge greetings from Argentina
James - I just bought the Fuzz Face JHF1 ( new old stock Dunlop circa 2015 model ) It has more mid scoop than I imagined. Fender American Pro 1 Strat at all full , btw i ran it through my Vox AC4T1 and my Orange TH30C both clean and dirty. Is it expected at low volume setting on the pedal ???
I am trying to get the hugest Hendrix-Stevie Ray tone possible.. not necessarily most distorted, just the hugest tone all the way..Would it be more in the amp, speakers, guitar, pickups, or pedals? Some even say the pots on the guitars matters a lot.. I got an American Strat, '66 Bassman, '70 Twin reverb, both have JBL D120 F speakers, Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Chorus, Delay, Phase 90, Harmonist.. I dont have an Octave pedal or univibe yet.. I am mostly talking about getting the huge basic tone, with or without any extra pedals..I mean would the pickups matter a lot, I got stock Fenders in it now..I heard maybe Lollars or Fender '69 were good.. what do you say? What would make the most difference?
Coming back to your channel, I seem to remember there being more videos than there are now? Am I misremembering or have you removed some of your videos? Atb - Luther 😎👍
That 66 G fuzz is spectacular....I had an old red one that got stolen many years ago and been trying to get that tone again....What do you think of the Dustin Ivor FF clones that are out now ?
Very usefull video James. Thank you. Would you recommend using a treble bleed on the volume pot of the guitar or is it better to stay away from that when trying to make the Jimi Hendrix fuzz type sounds?
Danny Plinck I haven’t heard of anyone recommending a treble bleed circuit with fuzz faces. Si fuzzes especially get even brighter when you turn down the guitar volume so no need for a treble bleed. Btw this applies to single coils. Hope that helps, have a nice day! 😊
How is it not absolutely screeching next to you at that volume? I tried diming everything on my plexi and it's unplayable. Using a different speaker than the 4x12 by you?
