In this video, Dominican twin sisters Sol and Luna react to Heneral Luna the movie. General Antonio Luna (John Arcilla), commander of the revolutionary army, is spoiling for a fight. After three hundred years as a Spanish colony, the Philippines must endure a new foreign power: the United States of America. General Luna wants to fight for freedom but members of the elite want to strike a deal with the Americans. The infighting is fierce in the new cabinet but General Luna and his loyal men forge ahead even as his military decisions are met with resistance from soldiers who are loyal only to President Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado). Ultimately, it is the general’s legendary temper and pride that bring him to his death when a pack of presidential guards assassinate him in broad daylight. While American newspapers blame Aguinaldo, the mystery of General Luna’s assassination was never completely solved and his killers never put to justice.
Directed by Jerrold Tarog
Starring John Arcilla, Mon Confiado, and Arron Villaflor.

You're not alone hating Emilio Aguinaldo. As a student when I was still in the Philippines, I was aware of what really happened to Andres Bonifacio and Heneral Luna, but the Philippine History books we had during that time were riddled with LIES, I knew the real events because of my great grandfather who fought on the side of Bonifacio.

In my opinion I'd say Aguinaldo was one of those "necessary evil" kinda guys. Like... we can't deny his contributions to our country's freedom, but on the other hand he most probably betrayed two of the most contributing heroes of war in the history of the Philippines. Antonio Luna and Andrés Bonifacio did not deserve their deaths, but Aguinaldo was very burdened, with wars breaking out. To conclude, I look up to Luna and Bonifacio, but Aguinaldo's just so-so that was there to be the face of the Filipinos at the time of his presidency _(basically he had the potential, but he never grew a backbone in things he should've thought of clearly before sending out orders)_ and mostly gets overlooked nowadays.

You're not wrong, but I did learn about what Aguinaldo did to Bonifacio from one of my academic textbooks. I remember I was around grade 5 or grade 6 that time, completely stunned at the betrayal, so it got me very interested in History for the first time. I always study, yes, but that was the first time I was deeply invested in learning History solely because I was genuinely curious. I knew Aguinaldo was the first president so my young marites self found it controversial. I guess the authors and publisher of that textbook were very brave for putting that out, but it seems like later history books had that story too.

It's no secret what he did tho. Maybe in elementary textbooks history is a bit concised, but highschool/college curriculum delve on history further. Just like how we learn Rizal was not really a one-dimensional saint-like hero. We get to know each of their good deeds and bad deeds and everything in between.

Aguinaldo's cowardice didn't end with the Americans. He lived long enough to witness World War II, and guess what, he collaborated with and supported the Japanese invaders. He may be the first Philippine president but he will never be a hero. He never defended the Philippines, he simply took the easy route "to side with the enemies" to save himself, and that's why he lived that long until his death in 1964 while his comrades died young for their martyrdom and heroism.

59:41, Aguinaldo said that he never sent a telegram to Luna to come to Cabanatuan where in he wasn't there. A year or two later after the release of this film, a letter surfaced on one of the museums in the Philippines where in Aguinaldo indeed sent a telegram asking Luna to go to Cabanatuan.

1:00:00 Francisco ‘Paco’ Román y Velasquez a Filipino-Spanish soldier. He was the colonel who went with General Luna when Gen. Luna charged with his horse at the Americans during their battle - the one who stopped Gen. Luna from killing himself. Also, the guy who surrendered and had a scar at the forehead at the end was Eduardo Rusca, so he lived to tell the tale. Btw, thank you for watching Heneral Luna 😊🙏🏽 I know most people were recommending you this movie. Honestly, I’ve learnt a lot because of this movie since I moved out of the country at a young age and I wasn’t able to learn a lot of Philippine history. Now, it’s one of my favourite historical movies.

The Death Scene is close to reality. Luna walked from the Convent to the plaza several meters from the convent. And according to historians he sustained 40+ stab wounds and was shooting till he died. Till this day there is a marker in Cabanatuan pointing the exact place he died.

“The Revolution failed because it was badly directed, because its leader won his post not with praiseworthy but with blameworthy acts, because instead of employing the most useful men of the nation he jealously discarded them. Believing that the advance of the people was no more than his own personal advance, he did not rate men according to their ability, character, and patriotism but according to the degree of friendship or kinship binding him to them; and wanting to have favorites willing to sacrifice themselves for him, he showed himself lenient to their faults. Because he disdained the people, he could not but fall like an idol of wax melting in the heat of adversity. May we never forget such a terrible lesson learned at the cost of unspeakable sufferings!” - Apolinario Mabini, *_on Emilio Aguinaldo and his cabinet members_* Also, I like your reaction to this movie. We are grateful that you are learning our history, as well as the heroes of our country.

LOVE YOU GUYS!! I didn’t think you were going to react to this cause of copyright, but I got so excited when you posted this!! Here are some of the questions you had that I’m able to answer (and these are based on research that I did, and historians that I watched on RU-vid): -Heneral Luna is such a badass and really temperamental. And from what I researched, majority of these scenes are historically accurate. Even some of the dramatic parts that I thought were only for entertainment purposes actually happened in real life! The only thing I’m not certain about is his love life with Isabel. -Ensaymada is a sweet Filipino bread with sugar on top, and cheese. It’s delicious! -Rizal and Luna were friends when they both studied in Europe. They’re friendship almost fell apart when they fought each other (and almost dueled) about a French woman that they both fell in love with. But since Luna was drunk during the heated argument, Rizal wanted to duel when he was sober so that it’s fair. But the French woman fell in love with Rizal which resulted in Luna apologizing to Rizal via letter. I got this information from historians. -The Bonifacio death scene was with Andrés and his brother. As you saw, they were both killed brutally. Andrés’ younger brother, Procopio, was the one shot in the back multiple times, and Andrés was hacked to death, defenceless. Andrés was injured in the leg from a previous fight, so several people had to carry him up the mountain to execute him. But of course, they didn’t know they were going to be executed otherwise Procopio would have probably fought back. -Antonio Luna survived multiple gunshot wounds, but ended up dying when he was stabbed multiple times. At 57:51 was Aguinaldo’s mom asking if Antonio Luna was still alive. This actually happened. Aguinaldo’s mom watched the whole thing from her window. -The other guy that was assassinated with him is Colonel Roman. Paco survived, but was only injured during the shoot-out. - for the rest of his life, Emilio refuses to admit that he sent a telegram to Luna. And it’s interesting that you mentioned that Aguinaldo was a “puppet”. The Americans at the time also said the same thing. The sequel to Heneral Luna is just as great. It’s called “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (The Boy General)”. It’s about Gregorio Del Pilar who also made an appearance in Heneral Luna. A bit of a spoiler, in the movie, Goyo suffers from PTSD, but is pressured to do his tasks as one of the youngest Generals in the Philippines. But before “Goyo”, there’s a 20 minute short film called “Angelito”. It’s supposed to be a bridge between “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo”. You can’t find it on RU-vid though, but if you search on Google, it will lead you to a Facebook post where you can watch Angelito. Just letting you know in case you guys are ever curious to watch the whole series 💙

It is said that Bonifacio, Luna, and other Philippine heroes had talisman that made them invincible in the battlefield. The conquerors didn't know about it but some Filipinos revealed it to the Americans thus they were ordered to kill their own comrades because they know the weaknesses of the heroes' talisman. Like Andres Bonifacio, you can't kill him if he's facing you unless you attack him from the back. Most of the Philippine heroes died because of betrayal by their own people.

• Dr. Jose Rizal was already dead (sentenced to death by firing squad) when the Philippine-American war broke out, Luna and Rizal is a close friends when they both studying in Europe. • Andres Bonifacio and his brother Procorpio was sentenced to dead by Aguinaldo and his revolutionary government court in Mount Buntis due "sedition" and "coup de'tat" (but it was really a baseless accusation). • General Luna is born in Manila. The movie portrays how Luna wants to unify the scattered army of the Philippines so that the armed forces will be strong, because during that time Filipinos only think of their hometown and tribes and protecting it instead of being united and protec the whole Philippines from aggressors. Btw, I'd like your Review/Reaction in this beautiful epic movie. I enjoy it!

Please also react to Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo. In this movie you would of course follow Andres Bonifacio's story and you will also come to understand why some of us Filipinos hate Emilio Aguinaldo and why we consider Bonifacio our first president, not Aguinaldo. In this movie you will also see Dr. Jose Rizal interact with Bonifacio. This movie is not connected or not produced by the team who made Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, so that means you will see a different actor playing Aguinaldo.

Francisco (Paco) Roman y Velasquez was the one who died w/ Gen. Luna, same guy who stopped him from killing himself. Paco was one of the most trusted soldiers of Gen. Luna together with Rusca the other soldier who were with him. The way they portrayed Gen. Luna being dragged was similar to a famous painting made by Gen. Ensaymada - a type of sweet bread rolled bread, usually with a filling inside and topped with sugar and cheese shavings Yes, Antonio Luna's brother Juan Luna was with Rizal in Spain who was our national painter. (If you saw the part where they dragged Luna's dead body, it was paying homage to Juan Luna's painting called "Spolarium" in the National Museum in Manila. I recommend checking that painting out if you get a chance to roam around Manila) I think Paco was the one that lived. Yah, I don't think that was THE Manuel Quezon. And yes, the accepted opinion is that Emilio Aguinaldo was a spineless pinuno. Yey! I just watched the film recently since I didn't get the chance to watch it when it aired. Thanks for this!

Ensaymada is the very same ensemada bread you have there in Latin-America. The only difference is the Filipino ensemada is it coated with margarine and granulated sugar instead of powder sugar just like you have there in Latin-America and Spain. Also for the key point of General Luna's cursing can be translate direct to Spanish. "Putang ina" or 'tangina in short means "Puta madre" and "Putang ina mo or 'tangina mo is "Tu puta madre" The word "Puta" is a curse word in Filipino language too. And if you notice General Luna curse Puñeta. It's a Filipino-Spanish cursing. There is no linguistic record of it that it came from the Spanish. It was a bad expression created by the Spaniards in the Philippines pass to the old rich Filipinos down today.

Rizal was already executed in the time when the Americans have conquered the Philippines. Rizal and Gen. Luna were friends even when they were in Madrid , in fact they had a fight because of a woman and almost have gone into a duel. Another part of the movie, Gen. Mascardo was in the Province of Pampanga and the place of the war is in Bagbag (now part of Quezon City Metro Manila) about 50km in distance and they are transmitting messages thru Telegram. Americans first colonized the center manila before they proceed to the resistance of the Filipino forces led by Luna in the Northern Luzon. Luna had plans to build a stronghold in the Northern Luzon because of its rough terrains and very good tactic location.

The thing I learned from this movie that I probably won't forget is "REGIONAL MENTALITY" that up until now is so prevalent. The PRIDE thing that's been going on as if it is always a good thing. Like Filipinos always make a VS between regions especially BISAYA and TAGALOG. If Filipinos are making representation abroad, it's PINOY PRIDE but when local, it's REGION VS ANOTHER REGION. And it's just so sad.

"Mahirap pagkaisahin ang bansang watak-watak, Joven." "Mas madali pang ipagkasundo ang langit at lupa kesa sa dalawang Pilipinong nagtatalo." Up to this day, Heneral Luna is still right about the situation of the Filipinos and their ego.

This is sadly true. I just saw this twice recently in the comments section of a couple of vloggers here: Tagalogs arguing with Visayans. I felt so embarassed that they were showing this behavior to the foreign travel vloggers.. I guess it's somewhat inevitable that this "regional mentality" would develop, being an archipelago where most regions are separated by water and also by language. But hoping a day will come when there would by genuine unity amongst Pinoys.

That's actually one of the issues from us Filipinos, there are always Filipinos that support the wrong side and so it'll end up with us Filipinos fighting each other instead at the end, this is actually happening right now too at the West Philippine Sea conflict against China, there are Filipino's who are called "Pro-China" which a group of people who supports the enemy rather than their own country and those Filipinos who are in the right track like "Luna" just keeps on fighting til death for their own country, I guess history repeats itself, that's the sad truth.

Rizal is 5 years older than Gen. "Luna courted Nellie Boustead, a woman who was also courted by José Rizal, between 1889 and 1891. Boustead was reportedly infatuated with Rizal. In a party held by Filipinos, a drunk Antonio Luna made unsavory remarks against Boustead. This prompted Rizal to challenge Luna to a duel"

I enjoyed watching your reaction to the film Heneral Luna. It is cool that you were able to explain the meaning of the Spanish words. I didn't know m*r**on is such a loaded term. It's also interesting to see where you agreed with Luna (disciplining Janolino) and where you thought Luna could have done it differently. (disciplining Mascardo, though I thought Luna handled it as best as he could considering Mascardo had deprived the front line of the soldiers of not just a town, but the soldiers of an entire province, and Luna did not want Bagbag to become another Caloocan with so many of his soldiers wounded or dead.) I usually don't watch the death scene, or even listen to it for that matter, but this time I did to see your reactions, and I'm relieved that I'm not overly sensitive, as you were also upset by how he died. Antonio had a grandparent from the Aeta tribe. Antonio's dad was from Ilocos Norte, and Antonio's mom was a part-Spanish Ilocana from La Union (that part of La Union is now in Ilocos Sur) Antonio was an Ilocano but was born on Urbiztondo St. in Binondo, Manila. Ilocanos are generally known as fierce fighters and many Ilocanos formed a staunch opposition against U.S. rule. Ilocanos, who come from the countryside, have a rather rough reputation, and Luna swearing in front of Aguinaldo and making rude analogies at high officials is consistent with the reputation of Ilocanos. Many Ilocanos had learned to speak rudimentary Spanish because they did not know Tagalog. Antonio grew up in Manila though so he probably knew more Tagalog than Ilocano. But as an Ilocano, he probably spoke with an Ilocano accent. In the movie, Luna's accent is an Ilocano accent. "Secretarrry of State.." Antonio's nickname was Toning. At the age of six he studied under a tutor, Maestro Intong. He then went to Ateneo de Manila and the University of Santo Tomas. Then he went to Spain and studied in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, and Belgium. In August of 1896, Luna and two of his brothers were arrested after being linked with the Katipunan, the revolutionary group which rose up against Spain. Luna had been asked to join the Katipunan, but Luna didn't think that the Filipinos were ready yet to fight Spain directly and so he didn't join the Katipunan. Luna and two of his brothers were jailed in Fort Santiago. Antonio was tortured. In February, 1897, Antonio was sentenced to the Cárcel Modelo in Spain. He was punished more harshly because he had learned not only chemistry, but marksmanship and some military tactics. In May of 1898, his brother Juan got the king of Spain to give Antonio clemency on the condition that Antonio not leave Spain. Of course Antonio disobeyed the king and left Spain and studied military science under a Belgian general. Luna returned to the Philippines in July 1898, ready to fight directly against Spain and very shortly after, the U.S.

lol all languages and dialects of the Philippines have some borrowed words from Spanish. As a filipino living in Mindanao there are lots of languages and dialects here and there is a Spanish-based creole language which is called Chavacano and it is spoken in Zamboanga City the southern part of Mindanao Island. And yes, there's a lot of Muslim here but there's a lot of Catholic and other religion too. So can you please stop labelling the 3 island with your whitewashed idea lol like we're Filipino bruhhh.
