My Hennessey Hammock has been my go to camping shelter for 4 years. This Jungle Explorer Zip model is my new favorite. It has a bug net, a rain fly and the double bottom is as warm as an underquilt with the optional double bubble radiant pad.

Bryan...As a retiree for past ten years and being pleasure oriented was looking a more comfort oriented system. Based on your review I ordered the Deep Jungle XL double bottom along with pad, snake skins etc and should arrive any day. Looking forward to the experience and your clear, concise demonstration, endorsement is what pushed me to give it a go. Will let you know how I fair out down the road. Thanks again. Lou

Thanks for showing us how to put the pad in, I was throwing mine inside, and even clipped in it still slid around a bit. And you are correct, this is one of - if not THE best - camping purchases I ever made. And the snakeskins are definitely the icing on the cake. I’m usually rigged up and off to help the Scouts and other Scout Leaders setup before they even figure out how to put their spider web of poles together, much less their tents up. Takedown with the snakeskins is even faster. It’s also by far the most comfortable camping experience ever, no more bumps and sore spots and I’ve been surprised to wake up with ice on the ground and rain fly. I didn’t know it was that cold because I was nice and toasty inside. The Scouts who had fully zipped up their tents to stay warm actually had ice INSIDE their tests from the condensation from breathing building up. Not a problem with the separate hammock and rain fly and all the ventilation between.

i know this comment was over 3 years ago but youre so right they are so good ive littleraly just bought one i think it was the jungle expedition zip but from what youre saying im expecting a super good hammock. I also bought the double buble reflective body pad thingy with it hopefully im gonna be able to stay out all year round ( ive had hammocks before and they were like 40£ but they were still good for the price but this one is gonna be better then any ive ever had )

I have the Explorer XL, 4 Season Explorer XL, Ultralight Backpacker. I also use a pad in the hammock in 20F or bellow. All I use too, down to any temp -20F is usually as low as it gets here. The 4 Season with insulation, a pad, and good -40F/C bag and it's not problem. Boots freeze outside, but that's unavoidable whatever shelter you use. Except maybe a hot tent, which is not packable for distance.

I'm a little jealous. I just have the one but it serves me well. Of course, it rarely gets below +20F where I am in Georgia.

I have had the older style of Hennesy Hammock since 2008. I have the old style separate "supershelter" bottom with a light foam pad for cold weather . I have slept comfortably a few degrees below zero. For temps this low - you need something like the supershelter or bubble pad underneath you as the insulation in you bag gets flattened against the nylon you are laying on reducing it it's insulating ability , with cold air blowining past your back and butt! This new version with the zipper and double bottom looks great. As usual Brian gives an honest and reliable review
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 6 лет назад
I had the older version too until some bozo broke into my truck, but I didn't have the super shelter pad (or any other cold weather accessories). So I can't compare but I can say this one has kept me warm in some pretty cold temps as configured in this video along with an Outdoor Vitals 20 degree underquilt.

I just ordered this hammock based primarily on your video (and some other research 😀). I have another Hennessy, but for the reasons you mention I believe this one will suit me better. You are gonna like them. Just experiment with how tight you string them up. It takes a little trial and error to find what is best for you. And it also take some practice to find the best way to get into your sleeping bag but you'll figure it out. Sweet dreams.

Another youtuber (Shug) made the suggestion of putting a bight length of cord and tie it to your bug net zipper. You ensure the cord is laying inside your hammock and when you are laying in, you can just pull the cord to pull the zipper without needing to bend over.

I use a Dutch Ware 11' hammock with whoopie sling suspension, a dyneema ridge line and tree straps I make myself from Mule Tape. I triple fold the Mule Tape ends into a loop, stitch it solid and use heat shrink over the stitching. I use a toggle in a knot learned from Shug to hold the whoopie slings. It is an awesome setup. Under quilt and tarp above. Really comfortable, small and light to pack.

I've had my Hennessey Explorer Asym Zip for over 3 years now. Love it. would never go back to tents. I should have got the jungle one though, since it has the double bottom, and the sleeve for the bubble pad. The bubble pad is a bit annoying if you have it right under you..... I use the climbing rings and carabiner method to hang the hammock. Its super fast and I havent noticed any wear to the ropes.... I have some 550 paracord tied to the zipper so its easier to close once I get in. otherwise trying to reach that zipper once your in can be a bit of an annoyance...... Happy you're enjoying your's Brian. Great video.

I've owned the Ultralite Explorer Classic for over 2 years now, and I have no plans of ever going back to tents. When paired with the gigantic hexfly sold by Hennessey not only will you stay dry in a downpour w/ substantial gusts, but you can create a spacious work area while still keeping your gear/bed bone dry. Now I realize that the price tag on a Hennessey is likely to scare most people away (my setup for example was $300+), but for someone who already knows they enjoy sleeping in hammocks Hennessey can provide a tremendously durable product that will be enjoyed year after year.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 8 лет назад
+Aaron Jensen It's really not any more expensive than a lot of good one person tents and a nice sleep pad. And WAY more comfortable in my opinion.

I too started with an Explorer Asym. Still have it and love it. One day I ran into a guy with the Jungle Asym, sitting in it like a chair. That's what sold it for me. Where was your video when it took me 20 times to figure out how to put the bubble pad in? You are right about the Snakeskins. I have Hennessey Snakeskins on one of my other tarps and two of my home made hammocks. They're the best thing since bacon. Good vid. Thanks

Thanks for your video. Had my Hennessey jungle safari zip for a few months now and couldn't be happier. Reaching the zips was an issue, so attached some luminous paracord. Made it easy to find at night and easy to zip/unzip. I keep the fly seperate so it can be washed when the wildlife decide to add dropping on it. Which has happened.

Spotted your video after deciding a hammock was the way to go, visiting the Hennessey site and specing out almost exactly the set-up you have (larger rain fly for the motorcycle or the kayak-gear). Unfortunately I will have a bit of a wait due to current 'supply-chain-issues' in these trying times. Thanks for an excellent explanation and 'demo'.
@L2FlyMN
@L2FlyMN 5 лет назад
I love mine! I got the larger square rain fly, because I like to keep my gear underneath. When it’s hot, I put poles at each corner to hold it up for the best ventilation possible. I use the tent stake method for tying up the main line, so when I take down, all I have to do is to pull the stakes out, & it all comes apart.

I wanted one (two actually - one for my son too), but alas, this year has been rough on all stores, at least in Canada. So I bought two expedition zip with the larger tarp, snakeskins thrown in for free and 42" tree savers. The non-tent adventure begins. I may still bring the North Face expedition tent that has done me well for decades for car camping. We are even considering using these instead of regular beds... cleaning underneath would be so much easier! Thanks for the excellent review.

They are great too. My first one was an Expedition non-zip. I definitely prefer the zip model. It may take you a couple of times to figure out how tight you like it but I have been using Hennessey Hammocks for at least 7 years and I am never going back to tents unless there is no way to hang a hammock.

Great review, I love my Deep Jungle XL which is almost identical to your hammock. One thing I do differently is not pulling the suspension ropes quite as tight as you do. It puts less strain on the trees and all the hammock parts but more importantly, it helps with keeping the tarp stretched out better once you enter the hammock. I don’t necessarily do the 30 degree sag angle I do for other hammocks but at least a 20 degree sag.

Great review Brian. As you know I live in the jungles of the Philippines. I got the same Hennessey Hammock last July and set it up in my yard and left it there for 3 months. 2 typhoons and torrential wind and rain from monsoons. Not a drop of water and the lines never came loose. I use the climbing rings with a carabiner for easy setup. With all the ants, mosquito's and other creepy crawlies we have no bugs have ever got in. Ill by a second one in a few months. Pricey but it's worth every cent.

Going to try one with the Military Sleep System but with a twist others have found works better for extreme cold temps. It is recommended to take the bivy and place a space blanket in as the first outer layer inside the bivy then the extreme cold bag inside the space blanket and as follows the inner sleeping bag. This is said to really work well in extreme cold temps. Now I bought for the purpose from Amazon a Utool 83" x 59" 3 layer padded rip stop aluminized Mylar with 90% heat reflective heavy duty emergency blanket. About $17. Being short lol sometimes has it's advantages. The Utool blanket has eyelets in the corners and has many additional uses if needed. Rolls down to about 3.5" x 16" and being water proof and about 1 lb I strapped it on top of the back pack. If it works which I think it will the cumbersome Hannessy foil blanket between the layers can be left at home. Something to consider as I've seen in the past you have everything and have tried several systems.

The problem with a space blanket (or any other non-permeable tarp) used as a wrap is condensation. I have slept in mine in the 30's using the admittedly bulky (but very lightweight) vitals underquilt and been comfy with a 20 degree sleeping bag

Bought the exact same hammock just received and set it up the only thing I didn't like was the tree huggers they were to short and I had to order 🐍 skins separate !! The hammocks are a bit pricey !! But I think the skins should be incorporated in the deal !!
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 5 лет назад
They have different length tree huggers. And sometimes you can get free snakeskins, I guess it depends on whether or not they are running a promotion. At the end of the day I think you'll be glad you bought it and after using it a few times you won't think about the cost. I 100% like mine.

This was one of the best Hammock reviews I have watched. It sounds like Hennessy has stepped up their game. I would have put Warbonnet blackbird XLC as my grail hammock but I have to say this one is equally good. Just a few differences but still top end. Have you tried the blackbird? It the Jungle explorer long enough for a "6"4 guy? The slight advantage the Blackbird seems to have is the extra room in the foot box. Well and that they come in a larger size. Does the Hennessy do OK for side sleepers? It is asymmetrical so I would think it would be good in that regard.
@Aaron_Jensen
@Aaron_Jensen 8 лет назад
Multiple hammocks from Hennessey offer around 7ft of space, and I believe their jungle hammocks fall into that category. Now when it comes to being a side sleeper in a Hennessey the opinions vary from one person to another. Personally speaking I've never been uncomfortable whilst sleeping on my side in the Ultralite Explorer classic, but what I really enjoy is the fact that I can fall asleep on my back. Which is something that is rarely accomplish for me in a bed.

very good video about the HH jungle explorer model set up. I recently bought a HH Expedition Asym Zip because it was affordable. I'm looking at placing a swatch of fabric between my backside & the hammock to foil them pesky skeeters from penetrating. If it isn't storming, I'm not adverse to hanging a Thermocell device under the hammock some way. A long time past I used an Army jungle hammock for canoe camping but the old Duck canvas hammocks were sort of hefty.

Great review,,,not too much yak-yak nor "non words". You kept it interesting and very full of information. Nice comment re; comfort in storm, pouch for misc inside also repeated comment re; zipper issue was needed. I always pull up ebay in another window and ck prices of items to give me a guideline. At $280 w/free shipping it would be my first purchase if I were going camping or where I may need to be outdoors overnight. As I said once before my age is temporarily 70 so I'll leave "roughing it" to you youngsters. Thanks again for the good review. MikeC

+Joe Sanders I agree with +River rat but a You won't be able to tell how you like a Hennessey Hammock by trying out a regular hammock. The asymmetrical design is completely different and, in my opinion; what makes this one much more comfortable for side sleepers like me.

I used a Hennessy hammock for the first time this weekend and found the only position uncomfortable was on my stomach I will say you definitely need some sort of pad underneath you though The temp got to 3 degrees centigrade and even sleeping in a ex military bevy bag as well it got cold I have now ordered the pad and snake skins to complete my set up

Great video and great hammock! However I’ve never understood why Hennessy hasn’t upgraded their suspension system, or at least offer more options to the user. Tying the hammock rope to the straps takes forever and has no adjustability. If your hammock is off-center for some reason and you need to readjust it, you have unravel the knot and then tie it up again. What a pain. There are much better suspension systems available nowadays with and without hardware. I wonder why Hennessy has not shown any interest in keeping up with the times.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 5 лет назад
I feel your pain. That is probably my one “not delighted” thing about them. I know some people use bridle rings and make a friction adjustment thingy but I think that is probably not great for the ridge line. Maybe they are trying to keep the weight down. Or maybe they just sell enough that they see no reason to change. The old “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mindset. I still think mine is the cat’s meow.
@margoscargo
@margoscargo 3 года назад
Good point. Before your trip you need to figure out what length of straps to take. If you are weight conscious, this is a problem. Then there's your point about adjustability. They are too bulky too. My wife and I switched our suspension system to Dutchware's Beetle Buckles and Spider straps with a sewn on clip. I have not seen a better system. You mod the hammock by removing the rope and replacing it with a continuous loop of 7/64 or 1/8 Dynema cord. It is simple to do and there are many demos of it on RU-vid. One end of the Spider strap goes around the tree and and is secured by the clip. Then simply attach the loop on your hammock to the Beetle buckle. It is a quick, simple, lightweight and adjustable system. Plus you can separate the hammock from the straps or leave it attached for packing. I originally switched to the rappelling ring/carabiner method (which I believe is also superior to the Hennessey system) that solves the adjustability issue but it adds weight and bulk and there's still the issue of determining what length of straps to pack for your trip. I always use a separate ridgeline for the tarp. Also agree the the Hammock is that cat's meow :) Love it.

+Survival On Purpose What I mean is doesn't that "U" configuration on the tree make it possible for the strap to "walk" down the tree? It seems like one loop of the strap should go through the other loop similar to Atlas straps.

It looks like the standard one ( was 'shopping' on the site and looking at various RU-vid vids to nail-down specs recently). I have actually decided to buy both sizes, and take the smaller one if Im on foot or the larger if on bike or kayak... but have to wait due to current 'supply chain issues'.
