Watching this now after him having announced his retirement. Henrik had a legendary career and will be hall of fame bound soon enough. As a Ranger fan it has been a privilege to watch his entire career. I'll be watching when his jersey number goes up to the rafters at MSG. I don't know if it's too late now but the Rangers should sign him to a one day contract so that he can officially retire as a Ranger.
- Would love to see this guy win a Stanley Cup before his career is concluded; has had numerous chances getting into the playoffs. Class act all the way, too. :)
+Daniel Sanderson. People don't hate the King. I'm a Caps fan and despise the Rangers almost as much as I hate the Pens. It's hard to hate Lundqvist just like it's hard to hate Malkin. I hate the uniform they wear. There are players I hate(Crosby, Fleury, Nash) but I hate them because of their attitudes on and off the ice not their success playing for a rival team. My prediction for the current Pens-Caps series is the Caps win game 6 in Pittsburgh and lose game 7 at home by five goals. If you meet an optimistic Caps fan they haven't been a Capitals fan very long.
And winning the Cup or any championship in any sport is a TEAM effort. You could be the best hockey player in the world. If your team doesn't Perform then you won't win.
Goalies rarely get drafted early. He didn't really break onto the scene until the 2006 Winter Olympics when he backstopped Sweden to the gold medal. That was when he took the starting job from Kevin Weekes.
I think the most saddest thing is dipetro was 1st overall and was a injury and concussion prone goalie who was bought out and said to be a major draft bust
I'm an Islanders fan, but I will never have anything but respect for this guy. Hands down the greatest goalie of this generation. I hope he wins a cup, just not with the Rangers
i remember back in 2001-2005, i was 7-12 years old and Frölunda HC was my favorite team, they had both the twins but i was totally sold on this goalie, he quickly became my favorite player, he made Frölunda HC just as great as he did with the NYR. Good old times.
As a Rangers fan, born and raised it makes me sad that Hank has worked so hard especially in the psat 5ish years to lift lord Stanley. Him not having a cup shouldnt mean he isnt "good enough" because Ive had the privilege to watch him hold down the fort for so long now. I think both him and the Rangers know the clock is ticking. Lets beat Ottowa, then beat Caps/ Pens and win it all. The king needs his crown :)
Even today the fact he wasn't taken earlier amazes me. 7th Round, 205th overall, taken by the Rangers brass simply because they needed a goalie and the "Well he's the no.1 in europe should we take him? What they hell sure?" Goes on to be the best Rangers goalie of all time record wise, bet they didn't see that coming when they drafted him :P
When he finishes his career he will go down as one of the greatest goaltenders/players in New York Rangers history and one of the greatest goalies in NHL history
This is easy the scouts in NHL has blinders on when it comes to Europe, they just see the most obvious players and miss alot. Henrik Lundqvist played really well the two seasons up to the draft and did solid U17/U18 apperences and was a big talent. And seeing how alot of NHL teams at this point had several strong goalkeepers around born around mid 60's it feels strange such a huge talent went so late.
Hooded they said that about Ottawa in the grey cup, Patriots super bowl comeback, Jets beating the Colts and many other upsets. Also If Sid gets hit again, Fleury and Murray miss extended time I think the pens don't have a chance
Lundqvist is perfection, as a player, as a human and please don't forget about that hair.... in MSG they call him king, in sweden we call him a legend!
Hockey is really a battle of goaltenders, with relatively even teams, at a high level. Especially come playoff time. It's least 80% how well the goalie plays, and at most 20% how the skaters actually play.
This is primarily because goaltending when played properly is absolutely dominant over players trying to score, no matter how amazing a shot or deke they have. This is only not true when considering plays with multiple players and passes across the ice, but even those are relatively easily stopped when the play is read properly.
Die hard rangers fan, they need to trade him to a top team so he can at least have a shot at it again. Ray bourque did what he needed to do to win. Lundqvist needs to do the same.
I'll never forget his first season. He was the Rangers and unfortunately hes at the end of his career on a rebuilding team looking to the future but their will never be a greater NY Ranger. Hail the King
Lundqvist is an outstanding player. Love to watch him play, but not a fan of watching the rangers play because of how obnoxious the crowd gets whenever Zuccarello even touches the puck. Don't know why that annoys me so damn much but it does.
