I bought one of these last fall and by the time it came, in hunting season was winding down. Now, here we are again, leaves are turning colors and that Henry rifle is ready to go. I was torn between the 30-30 and 45-70. I got the 45-70. Our deer and black bear season run concurrently here; 30-30 is a little light for bear, so and this gives me a good 100 yard thumper. I’m not shooting hot loads, just Remington green box, and it’s basically the same recoil as a 12 gauge slug. My only complaint is they don’t come stock with a peep sight. I wasn’t a fan of that semi buckhorn sight, especially for a close and fast brush gun. I installed a Ranger Point Precision peep sight. It’s a quality setup, made in Texas, USA. Could not be happier!
@Lex5576

I've got the .30-30 version of this rifle. I'm glad I bought it when they still had the ghost ring sights, because I think they've now done away with them and gone back to just buckhorn sights. But I think it's the most ergonomic and satisfying to shoot lever action gun ever made IMHO. Superb workmanship and finish.
@charleshodge1873
@charleshodge1873 5 лет назад
That “large peep site” is EXCELLENT when shooting up close in the brush etc. It’s much easier to get “on target” quickly. I own a couple of Henry Firearms and will tell you they are awesome in quality of manufacturing. VERY SMOOTH lever action,...Incredibly smooth like butter. 🙄

A friend of mine bought that same gun used,but like new. Beauty of a gun,but it did have some issues with the lever wanting to flop down. Also the mag tube was too thin walled to handle the recoil of big powerful 405 and 500 grain stuff made for the big tough animals.They also later did away with the barrelband and front sight together. Henry has a great lifetime warrenty and even being second owner Henry paid for the shipping, and did all the necessary upgrades and repairs and got the rifle back to him in short order.Because of the front sight barrel band thing, they even replaced the barrel, new heaver tube, and the front sight s now even better.What a great company to do business with and American made.

I enjoyed the video and agree. I own one of these and after having it and developing a problem, Henry paid to ship it back to them and they did not fix it, but exchanged it for a brand new one. It was exchanged because of a design change compared to the first one I had. It is smooth and shoots like a dream. Fun Gun. And a a great shooter. The rear sight can be changed to a smaller sight if you need better accuracy at a distance. Also Cabalas sells a scope for the 45-70 and to use for Hornady Ammo 325gr bullet. good for 100 to 300 yards, but I reload so open sights for me. Keep up the good work Sootch00 .

I love my 45-70!! I typically use 405 grain. I actually saw a friend of mine split a somewhat small tree trunk in half with his 45-70. That's the only time I've seen one do that. I'm not sure what grain he was shooting but it was impressive. The only thing I didn't care for on his was the solid metal butt on the gun. Leaves a nice bruise when shooting his.

+FD Mackey Most of them do come in a more traditional variant, including the 30/30 and the Big Boy. Personally, the feeding system on the Henry is, for me, a better one. If I cant deal with a charging animal with the rounds in the tube, then having a loading gate isnt going to save me. The tube system on the Henry is a lot faster to unload, and a lot softer on brass.

I have a Henry 45-70 for hunting and its a stick of lit dynamite. Pictures and videos dont do this gun justice. Its very handsome , handles well, is very accurate, and the fit and finish (like metal to wood) is above average especially for a “brush gun.” I also must say that I have paid for trigger jobs on my other guns that arent as nice as the factory trigger. Plus it’s just fun to shoot and hunt with. And when you pull it out of the case......everybody knows its a Henry. God Bless Henry Rifles and the USA!

IF THE DAY should ever come that I only had one rifle to own, it would be the Winchester 45-70. Perfect balance, perfect weight, easy to bring up and shoot through the rough. Second choice (and no, it is not an automatic) would be the semi-auto Ruger 44 Magnum carbine. Short and sweet the Ruger 44 Magnum carbine packs a really strong punch...

The tube feeding is more dangerous than a side loading gate by far! You put your ha d in front of the muzzle. The side loading gate is superior in every single way. And also you don't have to cycle the action on the Marlin to empty it. Just push the side gate and they come out the same way they go in

Well I bought my new Henry 45-70 Big Boy Steel Saturday and sent 22 rounds of Hornady Leverevolution sighting in my Nikon Pro-staff, I was a bit disappointed with the new stock sights that came on MY rifle for $599.00 but because I am wanting a little more distance than my Remington 1187 for deer hunting in Ohio I knew I was going to scope it.. the stock sights are fine but no peep sight, Or at least my model doesn't have them. I ordered a Hammer extension for 11.00 because of the scope it's a little tight to set the hammer down. The action is just smooth really smooth like an old winchester 30-30 I had 25 years ago.I am well under 1 inch MOA at a hundred yards, it's really nice to shoot, felt recoil is about the same as a shotgun shooting a slug, not bad at all... I actually prefer the tube fed over the side fed, it doesn't mar the brass when unloading. It's a keeper one I will be proud to hand down to my Children and their Children... Thanks For your review !!!

@8654ZuluFoxtrot
@8654ZuluFoxtrot 9 лет назад
+Andre Krumins You must not either have one or have ever spent time training with one. The loading system on the Henry is actually faster than side ports. Being able to drop a round into the chamber and fire is 10000% faster than side port loading. Simple stuff for anyone who actually trains.
@therideneverends1697
@therideneverends1697 9 лет назад
Steve H. I was going to let that go as a matter of opinion but your simply incorrect. a Henry style loading action requires you do basically half disassemble the magazine to wedge rounds through a little hole. During the whole operation the gun is basically deactivated and incapable of fire. Where as the side loading system allows you to reload and keep the gun in a ready condition as well as having a quicker mechanism to insert the cartridges, at any time during the reloading process you can stop and fire, where as the henry requires the magazine tube to be reassembled, so what the henry can have a cartridge dropped into the action slightly faster, the rifles essentially a single shot rifle until its put back together where as the side loader is adaptable, as well as having a simply faster base reload. There's a reason every lever gun 1866 onwards was side loading, its a direct improvement. Its ok to have a statistically inferior gun, as lever actions themselves are statistically inferior, but you cant argue an direct improvement. Mosens are great, even though the VEPR-54r is functionally better in every way, You don't have to have a reason for every gun, and your guns don't have to have a purpose, its ok to have a technologically behind gun, because its fun.
@8654ZuluFoxtrot
@8654ZuluFoxtrot 9 лет назад
+Andre Krumins You are allowed to have your own opinion, but if you own one (or have actually trained with both) you would know you can actually reload the Henry just as fast, if not faster. The OP points this out in his video, as have many others, and I reload single shots and put rounds on target far faster than you (or anyone) can reload and put rounds on target with a side loading system. "Technologically behind" is simply stating that you don't appreciated a proven system that is nearly 100% reliable. I don't have shit to prove to you, I've been there and done that, but I will put the tube loading system slightly above the side loading for speed when you actually train in both. When you consider the single shot loading speed....well, it's not even close. Please, stand downrange against someone trained in single loading vs side port loading and see where you stand. Real world experience surpasses "opinions" every time. This was not an "opinion" post by the way.
@pipcollectormobile9859

8654 Zulu Foxtrot I think Andre's point is during the shooting side load allows you reload and back to shoot quickly, don't have to bother pull and insert the follower. I like side load gun.
@andrewjonas3557
@andrewjonas3557 6 лет назад
If you need to be able to reload on the fly as to put 20 rounds down range maybe you should get a gun with higher capacity. With 5-6 shots of a 45-70 there shouldn't be anything left to shoot at unless you are a terrible shot or there are multiple targets. Still in either of those cases maybe go with a higher capacity. I just bought a Springfield M1 alpha 308. It is semi auto and has 20 round mags. Fairly comparable gun, trading a little knockdown for more rounds which may better suit somebody that is being forced to speed load their 45-70.
@billbright1755
@billbright1755 5 лет назад
The old snorty five seventy, in very robust action as a Ruger #3 could hand loading up to nearly 458 win mag velocity, but I always found the more modest loads more than adequate. 405 grain flat nose hits plenty hard for moose at close ranges.. the Hornady 300 grain poly tips good for long range velocity retention. I’ve had my Marlin 1895 model since 72. This is much alike minus side load. All in all this caliber is very capable. Modern rifles as these are much stronger than the trap door Springfield. They 7th Calvary rode with to their demise on a hillock in the Montana Territory.

I bought a brass Henry 45/70 about a year ago. I always put some folded towels under my shirt to protect my shoulder. However, I did not bother getting a proper pad for either the butt plate or my shoulder. Big mistake. Two months ago I was shooting particularly well and in my enthusiasm, I fired far more rounds than usual. No pain at the time BUT I woke up that night with my shoulder and neck muscles aching like hell. It has taken 2 months for the effects to wear off. Moral of the story - don't be the hero. Get professional protection if you are planning to shoot, say, 40+ rounds in one session. How the soldiers in the 1870's managed I cannot imagine.

The majority of factory 45-70 ammo is loaded on the tame side to be safe with the older trapdoor rifles. The more modern lever guns can handle quite a bit more. Most reloading books list different sections for loading 45-70 ammo for the older vs the newer guns. The hotter handloads have quite a bit more punch than factory ammo. Buffalo Bore and some others offer hotter loads but they are pricey.

Hi, I have little doubt that the Henry 45-70 has a smoother action than my Marlin Guide gun. However, I don't like the idea of getting hands so near the muzzle to load or top off the Henry. The Henry 45-70 sure does look like a beautiful rifle, thanks for the review and video.

Sootch00 - Your video helped me choose the Henry over the Marlin. Arrived Christmas eve and can't wait to shoot it. Marlin looked functional, but manufactured. Henry looks and feels handcrafted. Doesn't come with peep sights anymore. Going to order a Skinner peep sight and hunt me some feral hog.

Love the Henry guns but damn, I really would prefer the loading gate through receiver. You guys okay with the tube loads? Seems like ya have to wear a revolutionary war hat to when loading. Good video as usual. Thanks much.

One lil trick to shooting a levergun fast is not to wrap your thumb around the grip. Just lay it in line. It take some getting used to.

I love lever guns, especially 45-70. Marlins are nice too, loading gate is nice but you have to be careful with quality from what i hear, although Marlin is supposed to be good again. Love your Henry sootch but the brass yeller boy 45-70 really gets me.

A guy at my club loaded some 'hot' 45-70 rounds and let me have a go out of his lever action. The rifle was tiny too. I have to say it was the most recoil i have ever felt with a rifle, you could easily break bones not holding the rifle down correctly. Afterwards I had a go with his 300 winmag bolt gun it was like shooting an air rifle in comparison.

+srspower I heard somewhere it only takes 5lbs of force to break your collar bone; an improper shot with something like that.... ouch >.

Gen Scinmore Yes that was what I was thinking! And the hammer is so close to your face with a lever action that you are clamping down on a bench with.

Correction: The original 45/70 had a 500 grain bullet for the Trap Door Springfield. When the saddle carbine came into use a new cartridge with a 405 gr bullet was issued.

I think they used the .45-120 for long distance and big game. I like .45-70 for close range but it doesn't have the flat trajectory of many modern magnum rifle loads such as the .338 win mag or the massive .460 wheatherby . But what a great bush gun for Alaska hard to beat.

Great to see the left handers, lmao!!! I own a C. Sharps 45-120 Bridgeport, still caught in the eternal argument, Henry or Marlin for my 45-70. Marlin WAS leading the race, but after viewing this.......... stone the bloody crows, lol.... Back to square one. Thanks for posting!!!! Great to watch, great bunch of bloke!!!! Cheers from downunder!!!

Actually, Brownings are made in Japan with Rolex precision. The Marlin is made in the US and by many accounts has fallen to the same fnf problems as other Remington/Freedom Group lines.

Give the leverevolution rounds a shot, they are pretty stout and accurate as well. I have had my Henry 45/70 for a couple years and love it, quality is far superior to Marlin in my opinion.

ok, so I need to know if this is just me. I have both a 30-30 side load and a 30-30 tube load lever action rifle and I would say that they are very much simular in full capacity loading time. I think if I was to time myself loading both rifles the side load would take the lead for about the first two rounds but then the tube load would catch up because i am able to just dump them in 1 after 1 and maybe gain the lead, and obviously the tube load rifle is much quicker when it comes to unloading unspent rounds. the downfall of tube fed rifles is always the loading time but honestly if there is a difference, it's so minoot that it shouldn't even be mentioned.

Proper cartridge Identificatiion of this cartridge is ".45 Gov't". It is a smokeless powder loading with the same dimensions on the black powder round. I don't care WHAT is stamped on the barrel. The ".45/70" is the identification of a BLACK POWDER round, that was the US military service cartridge from 1873 until 1893, when it was replaced by a smokeless powder round, the ".30 Gov't", commonly called the .30/40 Krag. This round was replace in 1903 by the ".30 caliber cartridge, Model of 1903 (.30/03), which was replaced by the .30 caliber cartridge, Model of 1906 (.30/06) in 1906. The .45/70 had two loadings, the .45/70/405 for the cavalry and the .45/70/500 for the infantry. Breakdown of the nomenclature is a .45 caliber bullet, weighing either 405 or 500 grains of lead, pushed by 70 grains of black powder.
