I was born in Michigan, at the hospital down the street from The Henry Ford Museum. It is an incredible place and some of my happiest childhood memories happened there and at Greenfield Village. I'm currently a history major at college and have no doubt that my experiences at the museum (and Extra History videos!) shaped my love of history. This was a great series! :)

Hal Roach told a Ford joke, I'll try to do it justice here: Henry Ford traveled to the Irish town where his family originally came from, and the town officials paid him a visit. While there, they heaped praise upon him, "You're the world's greatest entrepreneur, the world's greatest philanthropist, etc." Eventually they mentioned that the town was building a new hospital wing, and they asked him to make a donation. Ford took out his checkbook and wrote out a donation of $1,500, which they thanked him profusely for, and took their leave. The next day, the local newspaper ran a front page headline saying that Henry Ford had donated $15,000 to the new hospital wing. The town officials, showed up later in the day, and they apologized profusely, telling Ford that it was a mistake, that they'd have the paper print a retraction to correct the mistake. Ford, not wanting to be revealed to be less generous, told them that he'd instead give them the difference, on the condition that he'd be allowed to pick the inscription over the entrance to the hospital. They agreed, and he selected: *I came among you, and you took me in*

PLEASE keep the Foreshadow as a recurring character!!! I'm not at all familiar with "The Shadow" , think I might have heard of him in reference to Fallout 4's "Silver Shroud", but I thought it was such a fantastically funny bit of self-awareness on its own that you shouldn't worry about it being a bit of a niche reference, it just stands on its own merit!
@talideon

20:25 - an Elon Musk reference wouldn't work, because Musk fell upwards by buying into existing companies at the right time, whereas Ford was an actual engineer. That said, it's a very real thing that when people achieve a level of success in a niche, they'll assume they're similarly right in other areas (and rarely are). There's even a term for this, and I've forgotten what it is. I can remember a related term that has to do with a famous physicist reading a newspaper and doing kind of the opposite: reading a whole bunch of things outside of his field by a writer and then something in his field that was horribly wrong and coming to thr realisation that he should question anything that writer wrote that he agreed with previously. And no, before anyone jumps in, this is not the Dunning-Krueger effect. It might be something related, but it's not the same thing. This is about parlaying your competence in one area into unjustified confidence in another, not simply an overinflated sense of competence, which is more general.

There is a BBC podcast where there's a panel and the host brings up three facts about a historical figure, the panel discusses things, and at the end they have to decide if that person was evil or a genius. They've covered people like Nixon, Escobar, Elvis, John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin, Emeline Pankhurst, Marie Stopes, Billie Holiday. They do the occasional special where they've looked at Darth Vader and Lara Croft as well, lol. It's called Evil Genius. One of the things that comes up a lot is the fact that genius doesn't exempt a lot of these figures from being evil, but they HAVE TO PICK ONE LABEL. They can't (as the host says) 'be wishy-washy' in their final verdict. As far as I know they haven't touched on Ford, but it would be interesting to see what they'd say about him.

Henry ford was a big deal growing up in Southeast Michigan and he is a part of Maker culture in the area. The company got serious attention in my elementary and middle school history curriculums (without the antisemitism) and Greenfield village and the museum hold a lot of great memories. Even as an ethnic jew Its pretty difficult not to love him the way i grew up learning about him. Great series

I experience that double standard. In my case it's usually when people who don't know or forget that I'm a foreigner (though born in my country of residence) start complaining about foreigners (especially when they are using the collective foreigners). I always push back and try to get them to see how generalizing is unfair to everyone.

Episode 4 Q&A, regarding comparing history to today: One of my favorite teachers, who was also the professor of one of the 3 college classes I actually used before deciding college was to expensive to be practical for us 90s kids, had been a double major in both history and philosophy. He taught my American history class at CPCC, and was a VERY good teacher. The kind of teacher who retained and passed most of his students because he made the subject so interesting. Essentially, what he would do is present the history of what happened. He would add no opinions, he wouldn't tell us how folks back then reacted, he would just lay out a particular event in the most unbiased way possible. Then, he would ask, "if this happened today, how do you think Americans would react?" Or maybe, "How do you think folks reacted to this after what we just learned yesterday?" Then us, as a class, would discuss for several minutes what we think the reaction was and what actions we thought would be taken by the public. Only after all of that, would he step in and say what actually happened. He did this because, without fail, every single time we were able to fairly accurately predict public sentiment and find out that folks today aren't really all that different from folks hundreds of years ago. In many American history/government classes you get students who can be super divided. Even in high school my classmates (incl myself) rarely agreed on anything. In that professor's class however, current political opinions/ideals didn't come up and we were able to debate and discuss in a way that involved listening to and learning from each other. I wish more history was presented in this way, it actually encourages intelligent thought.

It was a car that was so revolutionary for the time that it shook the foundation of the American auto industry. It had safety features that were unheard of for the time and had an extremely powerful motor for its displacement. Eventually the Big 3 (GM, Chrysler, and Ford) got so worried that they bribed the SEC to take down Tucker by trying to charge him with securities fraud. It didnt hold up in court and they ruled in favor of tucker, but he ended up dying before he could manufacture any more vehicles

I know Ford gets a lot of "the good and the bad" historical treatment, but honestly it sounds like he had the bare minimum of good ideas necessary to achieve success without a trust fund, and then he was just a monster. In his personal life, in his humor, as a boss, in his politics, etc. He positioned himself at the center of something which did a lot of good for a lot of people, but that doesn't mean he was necessary for the process or that it makes him a good person. Taking control of something that does good for people so you can be a monstrous abusive dictator makes you *more* of a bad person in my books, not less.
@scottanos9981
@scottanos9981 9 месяцев назад
He wasn't a monster. The historical context of the time is (due to how short the videos are) largely overlooked by the Extra History. Antisemitism in the 1920s was SO common in every western country. The fact that Ford adopted these beliefs and then promoted them was largely due to the fact that he was already surrounded by that kind of rhetoric. Remember, this is the same time period as the rise of not sees.

24:30 I appreciate you not giving him an armchair ADD diagnosis. As someone with ADD, I find the idea that Henry fords utter ignorance was a result of it to be uh.. slightly offensive? Not that I think you were implying that, just like.. the thought makes me feel icky.

I thought it was pretty clear in your production the automobile was not invented by Ford.

I know you guys are probably inundated with suggestions from your fans, but nevertheless I would love if you guys would take another. I feel like you guys would do an amazing job doing a single-episode series about Americans building nuclear shelters in suburbs.

ford just like any other historical figure is someone we should learn from but not idealize or demonize because just like any other historical figure they inform us about ourselves and the human condition when anyone is given too much power

I'm an English teacher, of course I would like a Foreshadow cup. Not a mug, I don't drink coffee.

29:25 I think it’s also worth mentioning that someone’s impact on the world and their quality as an individual are two VASTLY different things - they often intersect, but they’re not mutually entwined. I think with ford I can safely say that he was (in my opinion) both a bad person and someone who negatively impacted the world overall.

Shadow seems cool but I can't say I like foreshadow. It feels like the joke is a bit shoehorned in, and like it was trying too hard to hint at Henry ford's anti-Semitism, instead of just letting the hints be subtle
