A special thanks to my patreon supporters, in particular Daniel, The Benevolent!
Henry VI was King of England for 39 years from 1422 to 1461 and then again for six months from October 1470 to April 1471.
Although he’s the 11th Plantagenet to have sat on England’s throne, he’s commonly referred to as a Lancastrian King because it was under his reign that the Wars of the Roses broke out between two separate branches of the royal family stretching back to Edward III.
One the one side the House of Lancaster, descended from Edward III’s son John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster.
On the other the House of York, descended from Edward III’s other son Edmund, the Duke of York.
Henry VI is famous for inheriting the crown of England when he was just 9-months-old and for suffering such severe mental health issues as an adult, the Kingdom toppled around him.
He’s also arguably the only one of our Kings who simultaneously ruled England AND France.
He’s a pivotal monarch - starting his reign when he could barely walk, realising the dream of many previous kings by sitting on the French throne, but then losing it all; his life snuffed out with a blow to the head when he was 49.
On top of that, the chaos of Henry VI’s reign would result in an unexpected turn in English history - just 14 years after his death a distant branch of the royal family would sweep to power and come to dominate the history books …. the Tudors.

These are great videos. I teach British history in high school. I always tell my students, once the main Plantagenet line goes extinct with Richard II, nobody has a legitimate claim to the throne, which, paradoxically, means EVERYBODY has a legitimate claim to the throne.

You forgot to mention that Henry IV was not even next in line to the throne after Richard II but Edmund Mortimer, but Henry got away with it being the most senior agnatic descendant of Edward III.

Great series. I think you elude to this in your video that there isn't that much interesting, but we don't hear much about Henry IV's ACTUAL reign in this video. 5:00/6:00 is when we get started, with the preceding 5 minutes dedicated mostly to events within Richard II's reign, which was covered in the previous video. I would have liked to know more about the trials of his reign in a little bit more detail. What about his struggle to cement his legitimacy after his rebellion? Nonetheless, please don't let this overshadow the opinion that I'm thoroughly enjoying these videos.

From what I understand from all the research I've done, Richard did not order the fight to the death. Henry and Mowbray set it up on their own because they accused each other of being lairs and traitors. Richard put a stop to it, most likely because he wished to get rid of both of them, not just one. Hence banishing them both. Before banishing Henry, Richard did indeed ask permission from John of Gaunt and got his blessing.

I do not agree that Edward 3 participated in the coup to overthrow his father Edward 2nd. He did, however orchestrate the coup to overthrow Mortimer & his mother.

I agree with you. Isabella and Mortimer thought they would have a handy puppet in Edward III. Unfortunately for them, Edward was much more like his grandfather than his father.

You should go back to school. Henry the forth was not a Plantagenet king, he was Lancastrian. He was the one who brought the Lancastrians into power. Then his son kicked the French and won the French crown, but he died young, leaving his infant son to be crowned. Who apparently took after his French Grandfather mentally. Thus the war of the Roses began. I'm a Yank, (American) and even I know this. But apparently you forgot to read that part of the British History.

Henry IV is Lancastrian albeit through the Lancastrian branch (paternal descendant) he is still counted
