such great lectures!!! RU-vid is such a great resource. The technology of learning was so primitive back when I was born in the 1950's.

Sorry for correcting you @5:40, but the Barberini Faun was unearthed in the 1620's. Michelangelo died in 1564--the year of Shakespeare's birth. M liked the Belvedere Torso (known as early as the 1430's) and the Laocoon (unearthed in 1506 in Rome) and some ancient Hellenistic cameos. He did do some restoration work on the Farnese Bull sculpture group (unearthed in 1546 in Rome) which is now in Naples. And that ain't no bull.

Yes, Cantor is probably conflating the Barberini Faun with the Belvedere Torso. Michelangelo was definitely familiar with the latter but obviously not with the former.

Marcellus: Horatio says 'tis but our fantasy, And will not let belief take hold of him Touching this dreaded sight twice seen of us: Therefore I have entreated him along With us to watch the minutes of this night, That if again this apparition come, He may approve our eyes and speak to it. Horatio: Tush, tush, it will not appear.
