▶︎ About the episode:
If you’ve ever experienced trailer sway before, you know the feeling of sheer terror. It’s an out of control feeling and for some RVers it’s hard to relax while driving again. Many people get rid of their travel trailers because it was “white knuckle” driving. There is no reason to drive nervous. If you’re experiencing sway, take the time to investigate your weight and balance, axle alignment, tow vehicle, the proper hitch or anything else that could be causing the issue.
If you're worried about sway to the point where RVing isn’t fun or your spouse doesn’t like to drive, it might be time for the Hensley Hitch. Being full-time combined with a 62-foot long rig, the Hensley was a simple choice for us. We also have the added benefit of better handling in case of a near accident.
We’ve been pleased with the performance of the Hensley, especially during strong crosswinds. As I said in the video, it does take some getting used to initially, the hook-up process can be frustrating. With some experience, it will become a breeze.
Oh, I can’t believe I forgot to mention in the video about the lifetime warranty. Unheard of in the RV industry, which is probably why I forgot!

I started RVing in 1995. I have had several white knuckle experiences while using friction type sway control. In 2003 the white knuckle experience came to an abrupt end. No, I didn't buy a Hensley Hitch, I bought a Reese Dual Cam setup. This is an awesome sway ending device. If anyone is not familiar with the Dual Cam setup, it basically locks both vehicles together, eliminating sway totally. Due to mechanical advantage, the vehicle can unlock the cams when you make a turn, but the trailer can not unlock the cams, so trailer sway is eliminated. The Reese is also a weight distributing hitch and hooks up like a standard hitch, but allows you to back up without unhooking anything. The cost is also about 80% less than the Hensley. I used this setup on a 35' Sportsmen Travel Trailer grossing out at 10,000 lbs. It made towing an enjoyable experience.

Glad to see the Hensley vid is up! We love ours, and have been on two cross country trips with it. I did paint it black because I was not a fan of orange. We had a tough time too getting to learn how to hitch and unhitch. It took some time to get used to it, and we have had some moments if the truck is off kilter from the trailer...but not deal breaking. The advantages are definitely worth it. I am always surprised these hitches aren't more popular. As you note, the crosswinds in Texas and Oklahoma can be pretty intimidating. Our trailer is super lite so I equate it to flying a kite in those winds. This was where I was very happy to have it.

Going from a travel trailer to a 5th Wheel will change your life forever! Love our 5th wheel. They just plain tow better all around and a simple hook up. I have watched all your videos and see you guys moving into a 5th wheel toy Hauler or non toy but definitely a 5th wheel. If you guys would have bought a Toy Hauler you wouldn’t have had to upgrade suspension. Plus comes with Generator and huge water capacity. I know you guys know this by now but watching your adventures in Alaska I kept saying dang it why didn’t they get a Toy Hauler. I can’t wait for season 6. Keep up the amazing vids. Thanks for all your tips and tricks...

Well done! A couple of tips: You probably won't need the spray lube once you've used the hitch for a while. The fit gets better as things move around (I still clean the dirt off mine from sitting in the garage, though). When you unhook, just leave the jacks where they are. They'll be in the right position to hook back up. You really don't have to be dead on center when you hook up. There's enough play in the hitch that it will shift into position when you start backing in (you can also move the hitch head by hand if you're way off). That mistake with the strut bars is the #1 installation mistake. Remember, you're pushing the hitch away from the trailer with the strut bars, and it only has to be hand tight, no need to muscle it. We have three different weight distribution methods, as you said. I have the simple hanger brackets on mine. I find them to be the simplest, but some folks don't like jacking their trailer tongue up to loosen the tension. Oh, and you can hand tighten your jacks when the tongue jack is down. There's no tension at all so it's simple, though the drill does makes it faster. Great video! We have a few more tips when customers call about the hitch. That's why we remain a direct sales company, so we can talk to each customer individually. We've been doing it 25 years now and it's been a great ride.

I picked up a Hensley Cub and still looking for a travel trailer. We have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler a brick of a vehicle. We are getting a trailer under 3,200lbs. We owned a fifth wheel and went through a Derecho in 2012. A garage sale on I87 when it flipped over. 10 years later we will start camping again but on a smaller scale and less 2 children who are adults now. The Hensley will be a perfect hitch to enhance our Jeeps towing performance. Camping 2023 should come to fruition.

I finally installed my Hensley hitch this weekend. Oh wow...I cannot truly describe how amazing the ride is with this hitch. It completely smoothed out the ride with my F-350. I knew it was going to eliminate the sway but I had no idea it would help balance the TV and trailer. Its amazing how foolish this makes regular WD hitches look and feel! I can't thank you enough for introducing this system to me!

I put a Hensley Hitch on my RV travel trailer 10 years ago and had them remove it and put it on the next RV travel trailer I purchased 6 years later. Fantastic piece of gear. I bought it after I was pass by two 18 wheelers in crosswinds and almost lost everything. I don't get scared about much, but that scared the %$#^@& out of me. After some research I saw the Hensley and was sold on it. One of the best things I've ever bought in my life, and I've never looked back. Absolutely no sideway any more under any condition. Yes, it's expensive, but so is your RV and you can't put a price tag on your health and peace of mind. Don from Florida

I own the Propride 3p hitch and there are some important changes. The stinger to the receiver is more forgiving. There isn't a need to worry about the rolling of the receiver to get the angle correct to receive the stinger. Also the receiver is wider to be more forgiving on getting the stinger going into the receiver. I usually only have a problem with the forward/backward yaw but even that is forgiving because the weight distribution isn't quite as solid of a link. The drop bar is also adjustable so there isn't a need to measure the height of the tow vehicle to the trailer and order a specific drop bar for the setup. The one drop bar can be used across many tow vehicles. Now with the differences the performance seems to be the same of eliminating sway. I have towed through some severe winds that could blow over a semi and I was once hit by a dust devil in high cross winds. The dust devil was one of the interesting things I've ever experienced because the whole trailer and vehicle just shook violently but there was no sway. The Hensley/Propride 3p are big upgrades for safely towing a travel trailer regardless of your tow rig. There is only one life and my body wouldn't be the same after a bad accident if one were to occur.

We towed our 32.5' TT for a year with no sway control. No sway but for minor push from crosswinds or passing trucks. Not scary at all but could get annoying in heavy truck traffic. I scored a barely used Equalizer 4 point on ebay. It took all of the little but of sway we had out. I like simple. Interesting video on the Hensley. Safe travels!

I installed a Hensley 4 years ago. I had an equalizer hitch prior to that. I had some trips with side wind and had to really slow down as the back of the trailer swayed A LOT!!! I had the same experience as you when you describe the cross winds. The Hensley solved ALL of that problem. It did eliminate the problems! I do have one tip that you could try and share, and that is if you are backed in so you are not quite seated on the bevels, just use the cam locks and it will move the trailer enough to seat it, rather than try to back in the inch or two. Thanks.

Thanks Mark, I think your efforts will help many enjoy towing. I installed my Hensley Hitch myself prior to a cross country journey knowing it was totally essential. A long day of white knuckle driving on the road can really ruin your trip. I have a half ton PU and a small single axle trailer so, for those that say, "Oh you wont need weight distribution or sway control for a small rig", then that all depends on how relaxed you want to feel towing at highway speed. And as far as wind and poor road conditions? yeah you can count on all that in every trip. When you call Hensley you will find the staff extremely friendly and totally helpful. They know what they are doing and will set you up right. Only downside.... Expensive. Please don't consider the price a deterrent. After my first thousand miles on the road in horrific wind and rain and crazy drivers I realized it was probably my best after market purchase for my RV adventure. $$$ WELL SPENT!!

I love this channel because of two main reasons 1) you make things simple and concise. No rambling on talking in circles. 2) you seem honest in your reviews. That being said, I don't think I'd ever own this hitch regardless of circumstances or means. Reasons being, it seems like no matter what, it's a pain in the ass to hook/unhook every time. I currently have an equal-i-zer and it's got parts, but it's never a pain to put on or take off. I'd say it's one extra step above not having a sway/wds hitch. The stinger thing just looks like a pain. Greasing, aligning, adjusting, it looks like a lot of effort. Peace and admiration. I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, safe holiday season in beautiful Arizona!
@JasonS_IN317

We had a Hensley for 7 years and loved it. We had the chain version, not the Jack version. It works well too but you have to use little spring bar "keepers" to keep them in place when you unhook so they don't swing out and disconnect. They're a pain. We traded our trailer last year and went to the Recurve R6. I was sad to see it go but also happy to see it go. The R6 is so easy to use and weighs so much less. Also, if you take your trailer with Hensley in for service, dealers hate the Hensley because it's a pain for them to maneuver your trailer using their forklifts or tractors. We've had a bent strut and missing hardware that way. If it's any testament to how substantial a Hensley hitch is, they will buy it back from you when you're done with it and refurbish it for someone else. It is an extremely heavy hitch so you need to factor that weight into your tongue weight.

This brought back memories for sure. I had a Hensley Arrow on my trailer in 2013 and LOVED it! But he isn't kidding about the learning curve to hook up to the tow vehicle. We stayed at Beautiful Park in the DELLS WI The first time out. The camping spots where anything but level, not even remotely. I'm pretty sure it took me close to an hour to get hooked back up and this from a guy how drove semi-truck for my career and backing is not an issue for me. So as much as I loved that Hensley, make sure you keep in mind the hooking learning curve. Be Sage out there.

Great video Mark. You made a very important point in this video - understand what is causing the sway in the first place. Very few people understand the physics of sway and the monumental forces at play with some of these heavy rigs. Robert Pepper from Australia makes some of this very easy to understand, even if you are not a physics major, with a series of videos. For full-timers who don't go too far off the beaten path, this type of hitch should be part of the package along with a heavy enough tow vehicle. For the vast majority, this will be pricey and hard to justify, if you travel just a few times per season. For these folks, understanding sway, and how to load the trailer and tow vehicle properly so as to reduce it, is a must. Then proper use of a more traditional WDH with built in sway control should keep them safe. How many trailers do we see with massive loads hanging off the rear in an attempt to lessen the tongue weight to justify too light of a tow vehicle. Perhaps the greatest challenge for the occasional user is having a capable tow vehicle. Many buy a trailer based on the max tow capacity of a vehicle they already own rather than one that is safe. Often they consider the weight of the trailer empty, thinking we won't put much in it. Big mistake - payload adds up fast. There are many in this situation making videos about their ongoing issues with sway, and some have had serious accidents. This should convince people to buy smaller trailers if you can't afford a bigger truck.

Anecdote about the rear bumper where you have mentioned never rest anything on that lower part. Back in 2003, yep!, I purchased a brand new F350 dually Lariat diesel truck. Beautiful machine and further in the summer, I washing this thing every chance I got, on a beautiful sunny day, I finish washing and drying the truck then sat on my balcony admiring it. Looking at it I noticed a perfectly round very slight indentation in the middle bottom part of my tail gate... well I literally jump out of my chair and started investigating what could had caused this dent in my precious truck. I toke one of my kids bike and had a perfect match to the end of the handle bar. Never could make my son admit that he had done it, poor him. Now we are in 2005 and I just got a brand new truck, F350 dually King Ranch, copper colour, just amazingly beautiful. Same routine wash the and then sit and admire! When a few months later, you guest it, the same perfectly round indentation in my tail gate. So we are now four years later!! After running in my head over and over again what could have cause this dent, i finally figured it! .... After the hard labour of washing and drying my truck, I was always gratifying myself with a nice cold beer! For some reason, I had put my bottle on the lower part of the bumper and opened my tail gate 😂 and the rest is history lol

I too was experiencing sway with my setup, 38' TT with an F250, same as yours. I checked everything, tire psi, tongue weight, axle/tire alignment, you name it. Turns out, my rig is just too long and rather heavy and is susceptible to sway. Being that I have a SRW and do not wish to transition to a DRW, the Hensley was my last option. I ordered it last week and received it today. Took about an hour to install, no major issues, and took it for a test run. I could tell a difference immediately once I hit the highway. It truly does eliminate sway. As you said, if you're experiencing sway after eliminating all possible causes, I would say pull the trigger. Yes it's pricey but as compared to other options, (Fifth wheel or DRW), it's not too bad. Now if you're in the market for a new truck, get a DRW and your problem will likely be solved!!!!

I looked at those when I had a trailer, very expensive, and we went with the Andersen WDH and that worked for us, however I know folks who have had your hitch for years, they swear by them. We moved to a fifth wheel, so now we have more control over towing, also we have a 1-Ton F350 PSD, so much better for us towing. Glad you guys like that hitch, just waiting for the day you upgrade to a fifth wheel :)

Love the videos. Just a tip for easy unhooking, back in , set your parking brake and level left to right and chock the trailer tires as normal. As you learned in your unhooking mistake videos, (kudos for showing that btw) the hitch won’t uncouple under pressure, up or down. So, lower the tongue jack till it touches ground and take the weight off the distribution bars. Unhook everything but the safety chains. Pop off the parking brake and raise the tongue jack. When it gets to the correct height you will be able to see the stinger release and you can rock the truck a bit with ease and see the stinger is free. Unhook the chains and pull away. Works every time. ..then I save the hitch height on my level mate and can recall it when It’s time to hook back up. Anyway. Love the videos. Have watched you guys from the beginning! Cya

Thought we were going to flip the Rig after the winds kicked up in Idaho. We' didn't feel safe and slowed down and then the Big Rigs started flying by giving us the push / pull effect. Not a good combo with the high cross winds.... "White Knuckle Ride".for sure. Once we made it home I remembered you discussing your Hensley Hitch. I watched your video again and did some more online research and just ordered a Hensley. We have 3 more trips planned next month and I'm not pulling the rig again until I get the Hensley put on. For anyone who pulls an RV at any distance, the Hensley Arrow is unreal, but you will pay for it. You get lifetime parts and excellent customer service. Also designed for self install, but most RV dealers can do it for you. I believe the Arrow starts around 2300 for refurbished. I tow an 8300lb Sporttrek 327vik with a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins (not a dually). This is the third trailer I've had the same Hensley Arrow.

Hi! We've been rv-ing with our hybrid travel trailer for a few years now, and are starting to think about our next rig. We love our Roo, but it gets chilly in New Hampshire in October! The first step is to get a bigger truck, as our current one is really not up to snuff with what we camp in now, let alone a future upgrade. We're planning on getting an F-350 as soon as Ford lets us order one. We were settled on our next rig being a 5th wheel but as we were looking at floorplans of other models stumbled across the Reflection 312BHTS (Grand Ginger) and out 11 year old daughter, who will be using the bunkhouse as her own private room, prefers the bunkhouse in the 312BHTS to the 5thWheel we had been considering. The prospect of towing a 37foot TT vs a 5th wheel of the same length seems a bit daunting, so I've been researching the Hensley and ProPride hitches. My question for you now is, with almost 4 years of hindsight, if you were going to tow the Grand Ginger again, would you definitely switch back to the Hensley style hitch again? I might be over-sensitive to sway as I've been towing with an undersized truck, and am looking forward to getting my superduty, hopefully sometime next summer (though I'm at the mercy of Ford at this point). Thanks! As always, love your videos!

Thanks, Marc! A few comments after watching your video. You want to 'fly' the hitch head to get the stinger lined up for entry. It's also a good idea to try not to mess with the head once you pull the stinger out. One other 'trick' is to make sure you run the screw jacks down to relieve spring bar pressure before disconnect. Also, the bars don't necessarily need to be level with the frame. We have been using a Hensley Arrow for about 8 years and I won't tow a travel trailer without one. Especially towing a long TT - 33' with a short wheelbase SUV - Yukon/Tahoe. Take care!

Hey Joe, I pulled a 33 ft travel trailer over 1000 miles recently with my Tahoe. I have the equalizer hitch but I still get the out of control feeling when trucks would pass or gust of winds. I made a 2" X 2" X18" piece of wood with wedges on the sides like the stinger (hitch shaft) I put it in the hensley & it helps line up the stinger & the hitch both in line & height. Get the truck close & then remove the wood piece & continue to back up. I also measure the height of the Stinger & then adjust the hitch height before backing up the truck. The best thing I did was purchase a back up camera to see while backing up the the truck. Yes the Hensley is expensive, but so is your trailer.and it works great - no sway.

Excellent video as always! They are always a highlight of my Sunday or Monday free time, and I'm especially liking this technical series between your regular seasons. These sway elimination hitches are awesome for TT's, especially if you want to have a relaxing tow experience, or do not want to be a slave to the weather forecast in terms of wind. Personally I opted for the ProPride version which is a more efficient sleeker design. It was also several $100's cheaper. At any rate It really proved its worth on our 2000 mile round trip out to Yellowstone in 25-30mph cross winds - could barely tell the trailer was there except for the fact that the gas gage was dropping as fast as an hour hand on a clock! It would be great to hear how the hitch has faired at the end of the season, or next. Any failed or worn components yet, or maintenance items? Keep up the great work, and best of luck with the cabin and the start of season 6!

I bought a 20 foot TT on the Internet for a great price. It seemed like a good deal all the way around. The first time I took it out for a serious test, I was going down a long grade and a semi blew by me. The trailer started swaying, serious sway, and it was a lot of work to get it back to stability. I bought an Equalizer with the trailer, but it was enough work to use that I hoped I wouldn't need it. I never pulled the trailer again without the bars installed. I never had another sway incident. In the wake of the sway incident, I looked at the Hensley and I figured I would buy one if the Equalizer had any problems. I'm not thrilled that one of your AS hitches failed and the other one didn't work. This is not a good situation. One problem is that there is not much pure information out there, maybe expensive tests or side by side comparisons. What we have is YT with a lot of user experiences, some blogs and forums. The RV industry doesn't believe in problems. My online RV dealer was reputable enough to sell me an AS system that worked. They set it up by having me take some measurements, and that worked. I understand the geometry of the Hensley and there are some online pictorials that show why it works and why is isn't really failure prone. But my Equalizer worked and it is based essentially on friction. Given the nature of the RV culture, all people can do is give their experiences. My experience without AS was horrible. I would have stopped there, sold the trailer I guess. There is a cost issue with the Hensley. The industry provides very little guidance on much of anything, nor are they visionary folks. That's my opinion. I bought some used CALB Lifepo batteries. The vendor has sold a lot of used products and has a good rep. They seem like a great solution. But the DIY person ends up having to work out the protection circuits, charging from solar, the alternator, and a generator, in ways that make Lith much better than lead. Most of this stuff is fairly simple, charge and cutoff voltages, amp rating. It can be done on a low cost, DIY basis, but there's not much information and it is spread across the ebike community, the RC/Lipo community, the power wall community, and other experimenters. I know you went with the a lith solution. Hope you've got it all worked out. Maybe you could give your lith stuff the Hensley treatment. This is just great information.

I had ask how you like your Hensley when I first saw you had it. Glad you finally did this video. You have me sold on the Hensley. Most trailer places say you don't need it and they are a pain to hook and unhook up. Guess unless you make something for a dealer to hitch to you would have to take it off while you are having trailer serviced as the dealer could not move around with their tractor or fork lift. Great video and I am again thankful that you made this video. Safe travels and have a Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year..Cheers

Make sure your strut bars are level and the same length. Also, make sure that your trailer brakes are working properly. That being said....if you use an engine brake while making a slight turn.....expect a bump....at least that is what I have seen. We have a 39' RV and I Love the sway control of the Hensley.....I don't like the fact that hitching and unhitching is a pain in the @$$ if you can't be in perfect alignment with the camper. Some campsites are like that when you have a 39' Trailer and a Crew cab long bed truck....
