A low cost way to filter the air in your house to be clean and free of smoke, dust, pet dander, bacteria and pollen. I highly recommend these 3M Filtrete MERV 13 filters: amzn.to/47MKb70 20" x 20" x 1” (2 Pack 1900) or amzn.to/45se4If (3 pack 2200). They have great air flow and do a better job of filtering smoke out of the air than other brands I've tried.
To also remove odors, add this activated charcoal filter material which you can cut and fit to your box fan for about $5 each: amzn.to/2U2pS1v
To filter pollen, dust, mold, etc. but not smoke, these are cheaper: amzn.to/2MOhC3x 20" x 20" x 1” (MERV 8) Filters are only $5 each for a pack of 6.
Or you can get a washable/reusable filter, and some of these can be cut to fit a round fan. Here's a selection: amzn.to/2Zidk7t
True HEPA filter units, from $60 to $800, that also remove odors: amzn.to/2nhCmEJ
This HEPA filter also kills germs with UV light for a fair price: amzn.to/2mLhvsN
A low cost 20" Comfort Zone CZ200A 3 speed fan: amzn.to/2l4MBLC
Black 20" fan with good reviews: amzn.to/2mJFCrS

During the unhealthy air from Washington and BC forest fires in August 2018, and again in 2022 from the Bolt Creek fire 3 miles away, it was such a relief to have clean smoke-free air in our house to breathe, like an oasis. Going outside even for 10 minutes my eyes, nose and throat were irritated. When the weather got hot, I filtered the air coming into our house by putting a Merv 13 filter with a fan in the window to bring cool air into the house early in the morning when it was cooler outside than inside, then closed it up during the hot part of the day and ran our air conditioner.

What if it is not possible to get HEPA or Merv 13 filters? We are only able to get Merv 12. Would 2 Merv 12's on top of each other be an option? Also, is it okay to leave a filter on a box fan overnight? I also worry about overheating the motor.
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
A Merv 12 filter will still filter out most of the smoke, so go ahead and use that. I would not stack 2 Merv 12s, as that might restrict air flow too much. Running the fan speed on low will help the filter do the best it can by not sucking air through too fast, and there's less chance of overheating the motor on low speed. Turn off the fan, smell the motor and feel if it's getting hot. I've never had one overheat. Once the air in your house is clean, running it all night isn't necessary if you keep the windows closed, but should be OK if you want to do that.

I’ve been running 20” box fans nearly 24x7 for years. Since COVID-19 I’ve upped the concurrent fans running to 3 or 4. I use filtrete 20x20” filters good for bacteria and virus. The amount of dirt captured on the filter is impressive. Check my channel and I have a couple vidoes showing it. Nothing fancy. But it works.

I’d like to add further info that I’ve tested the box fan electric draw with and without a single filter. With a filter in place and monitoring the wattage used it does consume a few additional watts due to the restriction. I’d be weary of adding multiple filters. However a single larger filter like a 2” or 4” deep would probably work well since there is additional sq/ft of filter material.

Since these filter frames are made of paper, if you're going to use it a lot and tape it to a fan or window, you can cover the edges of the filter first with clear packing tape. That strengthens the filter and makes it easy to tape and untape it without the paper ripping.

I've been looking into buying an air purifier. While researching, I've discovered that even though they can run as high as $500-$800, they are all just basically filters in front of fans. Then they add timers, sensors, and Bluetooth which basically just are bells and whistles. I came here to YT, and saw many DIY air purifiers using the same FILTER>FAN concept. I'm now planning to build my own, too. I've already ordered two sheets of 16"x48" of charcoal sheet carbon pad for $8 each, and will pick up a box fan and HEPA air filter soon. That's basically what an air purifier is made up of anyway...a carbon sheet for odors, a HEPA filter for dust, then a fan to pull air through them. I'll just put all three together, and I'll have the same thing for a fraction of the price!

Thanks for your comment! A friend runs a box fan with a Merv 13 filter because there's a smelter nearby polluting the air, so all year around they have clean air in the house. We only needed them here for a few weeks because of forest fire smoke, but in that time the filters got darker from the smoke they filtered out. I plan to run one in the spring when the pollen gets high, because my wife has allergies, but for that a cheaper Merv 4 or 8 will do.

We did the same thing. Summer of 2017 wildfire smoke was really bad, so we spent $160 at Lowes on a HEPA filter, which at the time was totally worth it to have clean air to breathe. Only when the 2018 smoke was even worse did I find this cheaper alternative. I still use both. The $160 one is a little quieter, nicer looking, and gets rid of odors a little better.

Yes, we've been using the 4" x 20" x 20" filters lately, and I like them. More air gets through, and I'm sure it taxes the fan motor less. I get that all these products can all be made for much cheaper, but I'd say that it is probably not worth making these. To make one that is silent enough to be in my bedroom, has a nice plastic enclosure that doesn't look bad among my other furniture, programming the arduino, searching a few hours for the sensor library, figuring out the speed controls for the fan, finding vibration absorbing feet... I get that I can do all these things myself, but at the end of the day it just isn't worth the time I would have to sink into the project. That said, if I owned the house I lived in and it came time to install a fixed high capacity air filtration system I would probably build one myself. But for something that needs to look nice in the bedroom I'll buy one for now and be a slave to the corporations :P In my scenario I'm talking about something for daily use of course. Since in your case it is temporary, i.e. only when the forests are on fire, it makes sense not to buy an expensive product.
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
I still use the HEPA filter we bought before I discovered the DIY version - like you say, it looks nice, it's quiet, also removes odors, does a great job. I also now use a 4" thick Merv 13 filter on a box fan, to clear the air if smoke escapes the fireplace, vacuuming stirs up dust, or pollen is causing allergies. By using both, the more expensive one will last longer.

I like to hang a bath towel from the overhead fan and soak it with Distilled water which can drain into a plastic tub underneath sititng on top a TV tray. The the wet towel captures the dirt and dust from the air and the water evaporates into the air providing much needed humidity if you live in a dry climate. The extra water in the air will help you breathe easier and sleep better. The dust and dirt collected on the towel can be washed out in the washing machine the next day. Each day a new towel. Cleaner air with better humidity.

When the smokes are dense like the current wild fires, the FPR 10/MERV 13 is not sufficient to filter out all the smoke particles so I added a HEPA filter to the AC filter and use my whole house fan to draw air through the two layers of thick filters to get clean air inside. You need sufficient air flow to effectively drive the HEPA filter. Since more wild fires maybe in the future, due to the global warming, I am planning on having a HEPA air exchanger installed.

Yes, the worse the smoke, the more filtration you'll need. Our Air Quality Index is around 300 now, between Very Unhealthy and Hazardous, and we've kept the air quite clean in the house with a HEPA filter upstairs and a DIY with a 4" x 20" x 20" MERV 13 filter downstairs.

I used a MERV 16 filter and ended up having better results putting the filter on the air outtake side (not covering the fan motor). The fan motor overheated when it was covered with the MERV 16 filter. Even though it would of course keep the fan cooler, I would strongly recommend putting the filter on the air outtake side (opposite of the fan motor) as seen in the video from University of Michigan.
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
I've never had a fan motor overheat, but I've always used a MERV 13, not 16. The best solution is a 20" x 20" x 4" filter, which allows much more air flow than a 1" thick filter. It would take more tape to seal it on the downwind side, but that would work, although the fan motor and blades would get dusty over time.

If you want it to be air tight, you can seal between the filter and the fan with removable masking tape. I usually do that now. Even with no tape, I can smell the improvement in the air quality within 10 - 20 minutes. It still sucks the majority of the air through the filter.

Great info! and well presented! I'm in the process of building an air filter a bit more from scratch with a big silent computer chassi fan, and filtering cloth. But right now the cheapest option seems to be to order from China, but it will take some time to arrive. I'm building from filtering cloth as I want to be able to clean it, instead of buying new, and also to be able to build a more effective system by having the air circulate at an angle to the cloth, so particles don't accumulate as readily on it. It certainly works for big particles in a bagless hoover, to create a cyclone to drive the particles to the bottom. I've already made a functioning filter with a bucket of water. But I don't want to humidify the air. But water is really excellent, as you can just change the water, and that's your filter cleaned ^^ Perhaps you could do it with cooking oil, as the oil getting into the air would be easy to catch with a filter on the output. But I don't know if I want to be messing with oil.... or do I? I could have it filtering automatically ^^
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 5 лет назад
Our Rainbow vacuum works with water - no filter - the dust and debris hit the water and stick, (sometimes I add a couple drops of soap), the water gets really dirty and you dump it out. Works really well. They say you can leave it running to clean the air. Filter cloth can be bought on Amazon and cut to size. Not sure if particles that fine would blow off the cloth or stick to it. That's nice if you can wash it. I'd be surprised if oil would evaporate at all, I can see how water would if you ran it a lot.

@@HartzHomestead That's so cool! I've never even heard of it here in Sweden! I've thought for years that water would be great for a vacuum! There's lots of different fabrics, but I'm thinking of getting something mid-range, and making the design make up for it. Yes, I guess my oil concern is from the kitchen with heated oils ^^ But even so, if it would slowly grease up my home... That wouldn't be fun at all XD But I will test it right now, and see if it evaporates!

Smoke particles range in size, so yes, I think a Merv 10 would catch the larger particles. @HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
I've never had that problem. What speed are you running the fan on? I always run mine on low speed, as the filter will reduce the air flow and make the motor work harder, so higher speed is more likely to overheat the motor. A brand new fan might make an electrical smell when you first turn it on, but it should go away quickly. Does it make the same smell on low speed with no filter on it? If so the fan motor may be defective.

@@HartzHomestead Thanks for the quick reply. I had it running to high speed, and initially had the filter on the front rather than the back of the fan. As you mentioned, fan speed might be the issue. How about a round fan. I have a good quality round fan for many years. Are there round filters ?
@HartzHomestead

They now sell Merv 13 filter fabric, and washable box fan filters you can cut to any size or shape. I'll add links in the description. You could also tape a square filter to a round fan, make a shroud for it, or cut it to fit.

That's mostly how I've heard it said, the E is for Efficiency. You're the first to say anything and everyone knows what I mean, but Wikipedia says you're right, it's a short e. Probably depends on where you live.

Can you help me think of a hack for when your filter is too small for a boxfan? Specifically, we are able to get a 16 x 20 filter and we have a 20 x 20 box fan. Could we duck tape some kind of a cardboard extension onto the smaller filter? I'm imagining that the cardboard would cover up 4 inches of the box fan on the top or bottom. Thoughts?

Yes, that should work. I suggest using removable blue masking tape, and tape a 2" strip of cardboard on each side of the filter, to keep the filter centered over the fan. Duct tape and regular masking tape can leave residue that's impossible to remove later. Clear packing tape works OK, but I always leave a tab of tape at the end folded over so it's easy to get a grip on it to pull it off. Also, run the fan on low speed so you're not taxing the motor with the reduced air flow.

I did this. The fan is square but the filter I had was taller and narrower than the fan. I used some cardboard and tape to cover up the gaps and it works fine.

Adding the filters on the box fan does not make the fan motor overheat??
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
I've never had a problem with the fan overheating, but read one comment from someone who did. I always run my 3 speed fans on low, which is quieter, and it filters the air plenty good enough, so the motor isn't working very hard. I also recommend getting a 4" x 20" x 20" filter, which filters just as well but doesn't impede air flow much at all.

Funny, I wanted to be a singer, but really my singing voice is pretty average. I do get compliments on my speaking voice though, so all is not lost. Thanks.

@HartzHomestead

Yes, I would also add a charcoal filter, which helps eliminate odors. You can buy charcoal filter fabric online, cut it to fit, and tape it over a Merv 13 filter. 1" thick filters do fine, but a 4" thick filter will give better air flow. They cost more, but also last longer.

I've never had that problem, but maybe it depends on how humid it is where you live, or where your filter is.

Does not work because it filters out too much air
@HartzHomestead
@HartzHomestead 4 года назад
I'd suggest a 4" thick filter, which lets far more air through than a 1". But even a 1" filter, although it does cut down on the air flow, if you let it run at least 30 minutes with the fan on low, you should notice an improvement in air quality.

Air outside your house is smoky??? What? like on fire?? Do you need help?
@karenmikasko7148

The air outside my house was smokey most of last summer due to wildfires that were many, many miles away. The year before that too...not to mention my neighbors who burn in their firepits all summer and the odd one who has a fireplace who burns all the time. I have COPD so I am very sensitive.
