Nicole's clothes literally fell off the wall when the builder-grade wire shelving collapsed. I decided to be the hero and build her the closet of her dreams, or at least as close as I could get. This is the first part of a 2-part series where I install the main large closet units including hangers and shelves.

Marc, the only issue I see with this build is that you did a project for the wife without getting a new tool out of it. Workshop law states that no Wife sponsored projects can be complete with only the tools you currently own. Other than that looks great.

I just used that law myself lol. Got a new Dewalt miter saw, Impact driver/drill combo, and oscillating sander out of it. I built an outdoor sectional and table for the deck and one of those A frame ladder shelves for inside. Now she has a list of about 10 projects for me tho....

Gloves with sheet goods in general is a good idea. Those fresh cut edges on even mdf boards can slice your palms wide open. Not to mention melamine is basically an 8ft long razorblade off the saw.

Thank you SO MUCH for addressing the gloves as you did. Far too many people these days make videos without really knowing what they're doing. They saw someone else--who also didn't know--wearing gloves and thought it looked cool, so they do it. And then people out here in "regular-life land" who think that everyone who makes videos is automatically an expert, think it looks cool too, and it MUST be okay because "he does it!" Gloves and high-speed, sharp metal DO NOT MIX, and had you not explained it like you did, some idiot out here would've thought it was acceptable. So, thanks again!! (I'll come down off my soap box now.)

I have done 3 built in units and used the rabbet to make the boxes. I loved using the Snappy adjustable shelving jig for my set ups. The 8x9 walk in was my first project that convinced my wife I might have more skills than just an engineer. After watching this I so want the Domino. It would have saved me some hours. I love what you are doing. Keep up the great work.

I like the painter's tape / nail trick to limit how much staining occurs from the filler. Need to remember that in the future. We had the same situation happen a couple of of years ago. Wife's side of the wire shelving collapsed. We replaced it with a nicer closet system from a big box store. Yours obviously looks better. I'm somewhat surprised your wife was ok with not having a closet for so long while you custom built the whole thing (vs buying a closet system), but apparently she trusted the end result. I remember in our scenario it took almost 2 weeks just to repair the damaged wall and assemble/install the new system. Attempting to custom build a system like yours would take me well over a month (maybe two months).

When we did our house remodel I had my builder who is a beautiful finish carpenter build me a closet hanging and shelving system for our dressing room and the cabinet maker that did our kitchen cabinets build-in a dresser cabinet. Its our favorite room in the house( that & the butler's pantry that got the same treatment) worth every penny.

I LOVE that your channel has evolved into something that includes the whole family. It's less scripted and I feel like it's just more YOU...all of you. I've been sub'd for years now "because of wood" and always knew by the items in the background of your previous shop, that you were a very interesting person to know and potentially a kindred spirit...lol. Now, I'm under no illusion about "knowing" you personally, however, I feel like we all "know" you a lot better now under this new format...and what's cool is that I like you even more as I learn that your just as big of a nerd as I am and that you love your wife and family as much as I love mine. You inspire me in a few ways...with my woodworking and you inspire me to make more content for my channel. I'm just hit 911 subs this week and I'm really excited about hitting 1000. Thanks so much and we all look forward to the next installment.

On the note of checking your space to make sure you can get a build into the space….very good tip. Often overlooked. Recently built some kitchen cabinets for a friend that is renovating / remodeling a double wide mobile home. I built them a really nice corner lazy Susan lower cabinet. Excellent build. Just went through the same exercise myself. 30 year old plastic clips get brittle and when only a few are mounted to studs... Pythagoreum theorem almost bit me but I caught my mistake during dry assembly. Cabinets are painted white and I did cheat and make use of tape edging. Same construction method - Dominoes and pocket screws, along with a ton of shelf pin holes for all the adjustable rods and shelves. My cabinets do have backs, which I prefer as I've built cabinets with and without. Like yours, the closet looks so much better without wire shelving which screams builder grade. Looking forward to Part 2.

Marc, great job. I can tell you learned a lot. I'm mid-office reno with built-ins, and I'd say you discovery-learned a lot of what I have (saw your short on drilling screw holes in the plowed dado). Agree with below regarding the whole, 'Use the Ikea and upscale it' reply you made, too because that's just sinful. I would have broken the cabinets that can be broken in half, to ease installation, and while I heard your plan for that ~5" gap at the top, you're going to hate the dust and spider farm situation there. I also attach the frame/banding before any final cutting to size and dado-ing, and do the shelf pin holes too... but that's me, my aesthetic doesn't need the face frame. Looking forward to Part II, and now off to order a Dropkick Murphys tee shirt.
