See, this is how Britain became masters of the sea. By building ships with no walls on the sides, enemy cannonballs couldn't actually damage the vessel unless they were VERY precisely aimed! 😁

This game looks like it would be a lot better if it had a pause button, right now it just looks like it's a stressfest

A game where Jon working his crew into low morale results in mutiny? this meets my approval

Not sure why they went with Keelhauling in this game. Especially since the animation is clearly flogging. Keelhauling was tying a guy up to a long rope, throwing them off the side and then dragging them under the hull of the ship to the far side. A VERY extreme punishment rarely used since it often killed the man being punished. Any Navy, unsurprisingly, prefered punishments that did not KILL people or leave them incapable of working afterwards.

Jon: Gets sailors drunk repeatedly in a single day to keep their morale up Also Jon: yells at the sailors for falling overboard repeatedly.

I just saw another RU-vidr casually playing this on the normal setting without these morale problems. He kinda just dealt with it, let some people rest during the day or drink, sat in port for a bit. Kept it up instead of always being on edge. I've not played it yet so it's fair to say both people in watched play are better at it than me 😉

I swear, this video is the emotional polar equivalent of the Eastshade video. While Eastshade had me floating in a haze of relaxed bliss towards all mankind, this video had my heartrate through the roof and tenser than a bowstring.

Well it looks like an interesting concept but it also seems unreasonably difficult.

The captain and admiral rankings are accurate they are place on the cuff of dress uniform jackets to denote rank, the thick gold band are flag ranks (Comadore, Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral and Admiral of the Fleet)😊

So it is like FTL but.... There is no pausing. Combat is less strategy and more random dice rolls. Your goal is score oriented rather than plot driven. You can have multiple ships at once.

It's a neat idea but it seems like it has the same problem as Bomber Crew where the devs went too crazy with the penalties/hazards

Has injured crewmen, doesn't heal them. Yup, that's Jon. For being bomber crew with some differences this is pretty decent. The hectic nature doesn't really fit the theme though. Sure if in combat or storms things got pretty hectic on those old sailing ships but for everyday sailing? Having to keelhaul (rarely done due to the likelihood of death) or punish every 60 seconds, having to constantly keep an eye on injuries and crew numbers, and the seeming randomness of those combats makes this feel more janky than anything to me. That said, this is the feeling they wanted so it does it's job, but look at how bomber crew made some QOL (quality of life) improvements like that slowdown mode. In time I can see this being good, but now it is just stressful.

Keel-hauling means dragging a person under the boat by ropes on each arm.

Keel Hauling, is tying ropes to the ofending sailors arms and legs, slinging him across the front of the boat, and dragging them across the underside of the ship, the resulting slashing there backs take can be comparedd to going overboard with a whip (pun not intended) and there is massive risk of infecttion, not to mention on bigger ships, there is substantial risk of drowning, from what I've heard, there are stories about sailors that mutinied if the captain got to liberal with his keel cleaning methods.

When Jon starts saying , "Everything is under control." , it could go south quickly.

nice idea but the having to stop everything at night is a bit much. ocean going square rigged ships are a 24/7 operation with the crew working in shifts.

Yuck. At first the idea seemed interesting, but the actual game seems to be a hollow clickfest, with the only emotion it producing being annoyance from absurdly harshly timed mechanics.

I clicked on this vid because the thumbnail of the cutout of the ship reminded me of a 'kids' book' I read a long time ago. I say kids because it had a lot of beautiful cartoons of these wooden ships of the day, but upon closer inspection the book was a bit too intense on details... In the book's cutout, I remember vividly that it showed the surgeon's room and to my horror at the time there was a surgeon in there sawing off the limbs of wounded sailors and a pile of limbs near him. Because of that every time I watch a period movie where there is a field hospital and limbs being sawed off I am immediately reminded of that book. And now this book reminds me of that book, though of course there doesn't seem to be as much gore in this game.

Clearly the developer(s) was (were) ignorant of the fact that when ships of this genre ruled the waves the English monarch was a >>>KING

I feel they missed the mark with this, between the lackluster combat, the things in the background zooming around rather ridiculously and the general clusterfrickery that constitutes the gameplay. Random tasks popping up for the sake of popping up regardless of how much sense they make with no way for you to influence them outside of just doing them makes it all look like just busy work rather than meaningful gameplay and the resource management part of the game gets completely buried by the "oh we need to flog another crew member for the 8th time this morning for reasons" which again mostly limits the game to clicking the glowies as they pop up which gave me a very "mobile game" feel. If they toned down the random events and made them more meaningful and sensible it would be a much cleaner game as this style can be done well for example Bombing Crew did a similiar style but as each thing you were having to get your crew to do in that game was a logical response to things that where actually happening you could somewhat plan and actually manage things rather than just react. Its a shame because at the start it looked really interesting but the more you showed the more it felt like it was just throwing randomness at you to hide the lack of actual gameplay. It essentially becomes a "bop it" but without the tactile satisfaction :( bomber crew, FTL, sid meirs pirates and a whole host of different games all do most of this games content much better.

I don't agree Jon , the game seems well balanced already, its the mentality that most games are simple that has you thinking this is unpolished (civ legendary live streams), you managed to get ahead of the competition already...in a sense you have already beaten the game, this is it...higher difficulty is just that, even more crazy and faster management.

Jon, between this and Nantucket as seafaring games go, have you ever played any version of Sid Meier's Pirates? If not you should give it a look.
