The use of Imperial units in maritime(and indeed in aviation) circles is for a good reason - a nautical mile equates to a minute of latitude, making it and the associated knot more useful for navigation

Brunswik is probably wanting to train him to be a navigator... then rodger the hell out of him. I mean, fair trade for someone from the underclass, but not the kind of thing you should be doing until someone is old enough to realize that for themselves. Would have been hilarious to give the cabin boy a tiny push off the railing though.

hey Jon, I love anything you with a more historical bend to it, and my favorite thing you`ve done is the Ryse of Rome. I will never laugh as hard as when you were reduced to near sputtering with how little of roman history the game actually seemed to understand. Anyways, bit of a long comment here, but I have a request for you. Sorry if that sounds rude, but I do have a game I think will interest you. Its called Gladius and is a gamecube game, its a grid based turn based tactics game where you managed a sqaud of gladitors fighting to make their way to the top of the fighting world. Its a bit of an interesting game, not just for gameplay, but for the world it is. Its based around Rome, but an alternate history, where all mythos are real, but with some new mythos as well, such as all gods being replaced with 4, one for each element. But things like soldiers, names, types of equipment and names of them, and the way certain things are set up make me curious just how accurate the roman parts of it actaully are. Its one of my all time favorite games, and my all time favorite rpg. To give an idea of the game, my current sqaud is a secutor armed with lignator, with an umbo and iron bracers, a peltast with a jaculum, umbo, iron bracers and a pedes atti, a centurion with a tschehouta, and a sooth sayer who summons water monsters, and a wolf. yes, just a wolf. its fantastic. Sorry for making it so long, I just love this game, and would love someone to play it... cause its kinda unknown :I.

May I just remark that the 'ships boy' as Jon so elegantly puts it is the navigator's assistant/trainee it would make sense that the navigator was to try to give him a compass in order to help him to become a navigator himself. It would also seem however that the 'boy', Ian, does not wish to be a navigator.

The dye thing is true for the british empire as well. I am from Brazil and one thing the portuguese monarchy was interested when colonizing these lands was the extraction of Brazilwood to use for the manufacture of bright red pigments. Chief among the buyers were the english. In the least there seemed to be an english market for red dyes. I just have no idea whether India, Australia and other british colonies were able to produce red dyes as well. It would be weird if they did and the english still bought from the Portuguese... Unless the use of dyes was in such an overdrive that the internal production of the empire was not enough to feed it.

Someone's probably already mentioned this but given the dates and everything, it seems like some kind of alternate history whereby Cromwell won the English Civil war and the monarchy was never restored. Given there are senators/politicians in this, I'm guessing Britain is now some kind of republic, giving the US less cause for grievance, and so they never became independent? The blue colour is obviously so important because it's not royal red.

Jon, they're using sails, 21 mph/18 knots is pretty fast...I think. I know that the Iowa class battleship can go at something like 32, but that's because of her special bow and she uses propellers powered by steam

IIRC - naval crews could be rather diverse as the Royal navy was always thirsty for bodies, though that didn't translate to diverse officers generally.

So let me get this straight, so Ludlow is introduced to us with his speech about "a life at sea means you must be open to change", then like the next day we find out he's freaking out about losing his pistol because he can't handle change. I can't tell if this is intentional to show he's a hypocrite or is it just poor writing?

Okay this caught me off guard very well. "A nautical mile is a little over a regular mile". So with that said, it would mean that 1 mile = 1.xx nautical mile. So by saying 21 miles per hour = 18 knots is actually incorrect. Sorry, by a statement it is wrong, but by the approximate math it is correct.

There's stuff that I find horribly annoying in there. The voice acting is so slow and foppish. Also, the officers are unaccountably polite to the sailors. "I say, if you're feeling particularly energetic after tea, maybe you might pop off and have a little poke about the rigging for an hour or so before we all sit down for story time."

Also negative points for pronouncing it "Boatswain" - it's spelled that way, yes, but it's pronounced "Bosun".
