I recorded this from TV onto VHS in the early 90s when I was 8-years-old. VHS's had stickers supplied so you could write the name of the programme you were recording. Herbie wasn't a name I heard often at the age of 8 and I hadn't heard of Monte Carlo, so I titled the film 'The Magic Car'. I lost the VHS long ago, and for a long time didn't know the title of this film (or that it had sequels), but I always remembered the Volkswagen design of the car, the opening theme music (which I could hum it off by heart), and the title I gave it. (I've never told anyone this story) Thank you for the upload
Marvelous main tune, so catchy, so French (I know the composer/arranger Mr. De Vol wasn't French) reminds me of Paris now surely permanently gone. Love the strings/horns section. Childhood coming back to me. Lovely Herbie. Beautiful Giselle. Beautiful Miss Sommars. Gorgeous landscape of France and Monaco. What a race, what a movie!
It's sad when you realize that nearly everyone who was in this movie has passed on. There are only 2 actors in this movie that are still alive, Julie Sommars and Eric Braeden. All I have to say is God bless them and may they rest in peace.
R.I.P Dean Jones aka Jim Douglas, You will be missed until we met again :( Same to Don Knotts also rest in peace. Don Knotts was such a great actor especially he's very funny as Wheely in HGTMC.
@@pranjitdas24 I hope. Dean Jones actually owned one of the Herbie's from the original movie, but now that he's gone, who knows what'll happen to it. Hopefully, it'll wind up in the hands of someone who cares for it just as much as Jones did.
Easton West Since I loved Herbie The Love Bug and Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo equally (Which is something that is very rare for me) they both take 1st place. Herbie Rides Again takes 2nd place And Herbie Goes Bananas takes 3rd place.
1st 3 Herbie movies are much better than the others. Herbie was the car that made me fall in love with cars when I was just 6 years old and am still deeply obsessed, addicted with old cars even after 12 years especially Volkswagen.
I remember I watched it for the first time when I was 15. It was shown on the BBC in August 2005. I thought I never watched any old Disney films like that before in my whole life. It's kinda very entertaining.
Lmao this is the movie that I used to rent so much that my dad told the video store we rented it from, to pull it from the shelf so id finally pick something else.
I like to think Herbie was chatting about the events of Love Bug and Rides Again in the opening, and I think it went something like: Herbie: So guys, you want to know the story of how I became a racer? Jim: Herbie, I was there. Herbie: It all just kinda happended. Jim and Wheely: (sigh) Cuts to the scene of Herbie passing lake. Herbie: And I had my first win with Jim at Jackrabbit Springs, and then I had a race at Riverside against Thorndyke....... Cuts to the scene of Herbie on the bridge. Herbie: And after all that, I was entered into the El Dorado, even though Thorndyke was playing dirty, we still managed to win on the 2nd and final lap. Cuts to the scene of Herbie on the ferry. Herbie: And after Willoughby insuted me a second time, I took them to a jousting tournament, and of course I won, and I took Willoughby with me. Cuts to Herbie driving pass a big bridge. Herbie: And then Nicole smacked Willoughby with a boiled lobster, and it caused him to fall into the water, I mean is that even possible? Herbie: And we were ready to chase Hawk away with my own army of beet- Jim: Herbie! We know that sounds excited but could we some moment of peace for five minutes? Herbie: Okay. Fine.
When Herbie's passport is being stamped, his birthdate is August 18, 1965. That would make him a 1966 model (VW has begun model years on August 1 since 1955) and not 1963 as claimed.
... but in 66 they definitely made changes from the 63 the little "fin" on the back is longer in width than a 63 that's just an example theres more that you can ask a Volkswagen beetle expert (I know a lot u think but not all of it some changes I know some I don't so yeah)
Also that could be the date the movie take place in? I say that in question though as Dean Jones (Jim in the movie) states later his last race was 12 years ago... so if it was 1965/66 that would mean that his last race was in 1953.
Heres another theory I think the reason they chose 12 years ago as a line was because in 1966 Walt Disney died (I'm gonna check to see if I'm right) yep he died in September of 1966 (after he approved the movie Herbie the love bug which was Walt's last project/movie to get approved from him)
Wait it says the date is September 27, 1976 sooo the movie released in 1977 and uses herbie rides again's picture of Herbie also in the top left corner it says 1963 so Herbie is a 63 beetle specifically August 18, 1963 so that's probably when Herbie was created/born
At a VW show I was at I met a guy who owned a perfect Herbie replica that also included some replica props as part of the display, including Herbies passport. He pointed out to me that if you pause at 0:16, you can see the passport is clearly stamped "CANCELLED", which I guess means it was an old passport they just used for this once scene.
@@doodledangernoodle2517 no because dudu was alive by a computer and not magic like herbie and also dudu was a much newer super beetle in the later movies
@@liamclarke5761in the first one, he was an older 1960s beetle. It was explained in the movie that Dudu was made from a converted stunt car from the Love Bug.
Notice that the Herbie used here has a wonky fake ragtop sticker and has French spec headlights (yellow headlights were mandatory in France until the 1990s, I believe). As well as the front 53 placed higher up.
I noticed that right at the beginning the guy asks what the destination is, and another one says “Monte Carlo” but Herbie was actually being shipped to Paris, since that’s where the race started.
