I just read and enjoyed his book Possibilities. But those stories, and Herbie’s personality, really come to life in this interview - amazing! Thank you Herbie for your art and inspiration to thousands (millions?) of musicians. I wanted to sound just like you the moment I first heard Dolphin Dance!

Herbie has such an optimistic view of communication technology. I wonder what he would have thought about getting ads on YT in hebrew for the first time in your life about half an hour after listening to a feature about judaism on the analogue radio in your car.

He started off reading 4 part hymns. His reading was further along then most starting with vertical reading.

He was in a "Baptist Church" when he was young. Sadly, a vast number of Baptist Churches do not preach the gospel of salvation, but concentrate on carnal things: funky singing and dancing and swaying about. In the jazz world (of which I have been a part since I was about 4), the word "gospel" just means that fleshly rubbish, rather than the way of salvation. For example, Hank Mobley recorded a piece called "A Baptist Beat", which has absolutely nothing to do with real Baptist Churches, which do not have any of that shallow, carnal stuff, but, rather, preach how to be saved. I am a missionary and I have preached in about 250 independent Baptist Churches (mainly in America), none of which had that junk. The word "gospel" has been perverted in jazz circles.
