Herbie really embraced high tech music technology and used it to tremendous effect.

He's talking about the song Chameleon. Always wondered why he kept that bit in because it sounds so out of tune. But I have grown to love it. Feels so satisfying when he eventually puts it in tune just before the break down.

That's it, that's also how Miles Davis worked apparently: they went for first takes as much as possible to keep it all as fresh and spontaneous as they could I guess. As opposed to playing the same tune for 37 takes until there are no mistakes anymore but it has completely died in the proces.

I always LOVED that bit in Chameleon. The way the note is a little off than sliiiiides into the correct pitch. I thought it was totally intentional and was herbie being playful and brilliant. Playing with the pitches. I really felt that part of the solo, and used to play it for others like "listen to this sh#t!"
@matheusviolante8364
@matheusviolante8364 2 года назад
I'm amazed that was an accident! A happy one at that, buy unintentional. That small bit of the solo was incredibly effective at creating tension and slowly resolving it, all the while making perfect sense melodically and thematically with the song. Wow, how I am glad he made that mistake hahaha

Yeah Herbie! Herbie's ARP playing on Headhunters is still some of my favourite synth work of all time.

Mine too! When I first heard that LP as a 20-year-old who was just dipping his ear into the Jazz-fusion realm, it almost blew me away more than my first fusion experience, the Weather Report LP Heavy Weather (another knock-your-socks-off demonstration of the ARP synthesizer).
@kevinr.3542
@kevinr.3542 6 лет назад
ShreadTheWeapon I will never forget hearing Headhunters for the first time. It was just dripping with funk. First the stone solid groove of Chamealon then watermelon man with it's morphing intro. I was hooked for life. I was 18 years old in 2003. I would also soon discover weather report and it took a little longer before that gripped me the same way. But Herbie was immediate. What an album, what a career

Yeah I think that just about anyone you talk to would have thought it was a part of the tune, that it was by design rather than default. The beautiful thing about jazz is that it allows the musician to recover from what initially seems like an error and articulate it in a way that makes it seem quite intentional

1st: Herbie is an amazing legend 2nd: It's exciting to have affordable analog synths and re-creations 3rd: 2:26 Herbie didn't realize that it has NO midi out, so unlike what he says you won't be using this to play other devices via midi from that keyboard. Not that you'd want to from those slim keys. Over USB sure, but he didn't notice because, really? Who would think it didn't have a midi out and just the in? Had to save those few cents for the connector on an $800 synth.

“Headhunters” is just great! That out of tune phrase is noticeable on the ARP Odyssey and it’s on the first track, “Chameleon”. I play the album a lot. When I got to the instrument myself in a shop, Herbie is right; it’s tiny!

What rubbish. This is 3 years old and no-one has called you a bullshitter. Well I do. You don't know what song he's talking about. I have been playing music since the 80's and I can be out half a step and not notice myself, and I'm pretty sure no-one would notice it stand out on Herbies recording. I like Herbie, I have friends who like Herbie, yet not one of them has ever said, ''Hey did you hear when he was out a half step and slowly crept it back to pitch, that sneaky old devil!

@Shred_The_Weapon
@Shred_The_Weapon 7 лет назад
I should think that Herbie's endorsement of the resurrected Odyssey should serve to dispel all the purists who say nothing can top the original issue. He said that the only difference was the presence of MIDI. I bet he'd already used it when he shot this, so he had a clear chance to be critical and wasn't. That goes for every joe blow that complains about the keyboard. If it really offends you so much, get the module.

Is David Friend still on board with Korg to try to keep the new Odysseys as close to the originals as possible? I heard Alan R. Perlman started some kind of software company close to the original startup site, but admittedly has no musical talent nor interest and supposedly just started his namesake company as a businessman/engineer to compete with Moog.
