Momentarily, I thought that a young Barry White was on Alto sax during "Coming Home, Baby" and "Soul Serenade" - until I listened carefully to the artist's sound and ORGANIC JAZZ ad lib(itum) Never knew that Gerald Albright played with Herbie Mann and David New Mann. What a treat! His style was already there as evinced by Gerald's personalized display on alto saxophone. David Newman could not have disguised; he was the epitome of, what I call, "Standard Jazz" or "Academic Jazz" - smooth, cool, coherent and relaxing with adherences to form, structure and progressive organization - a la Clifford Jordon, Scott Hamilton, "Flip" Phillips, Houston Person, Lester Young, for example. Regrettably, there was inadequate amplification and effects on soprano saxophone during 'Rald's rendition of King Curtis' "Soul Serenade" Would like to hear him play much more sop. sax; won't you? Herbie Mann was, literally and figuratively, the multiplicity of world genres - from European Classicals to American Classicism, not forgetting Calypso, Reggae, Soca, Samba, Bossa Nova, Marengue (sp) etc. Mann almost single-handedly popularized the FLUTE in every genre - except in European Classical Music - after abandoning his tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. That honor goes to Julius Baker and Baron as well as to Jean-Paul Rampal (sp) and James Galloway - among others. Cornell was a "hold-over " from the King Curtis- McDuff era, while David Newman moved between performing Orchestral Organic Real Jazz and Pop, RnB, Funk, Soul, Fusion ... in Mann's Band as well as while leading his own Rhythm & Blues Group in which he played Tenor, Alto and Soprano Saxophones as well as flute. With the physical demise of both Herbie Mann and David Newman, Gerald Albright has been pressing on ably well. Lohvissimo!

I didn't know that this fabulous session was played for Atlantic Records' 50th Anniversary. Thanks for the upload! I still got Herbie Mann's LPs "Memphis Underground" and "Push Push" (CD too), which featured so many of my favorite musicians like Duane Allman, Larry Coryell, David Spinozza and of course Richard Tee & Cornell Dupree. Still very much listenable.
A fine reunion of Herbie's band in the early '70s. Kudos to Gerald Albright for doing such an amazing rendition of Soul Serenade. Herbie was THE coolest!
This tune is called "Comin Home Baby" if I'm NOT mistaken.... Love it.... Sergio Mendes did a fine version of it on his 67 lp on Atlantic "My Favorite Things".... Herbie Mann a MONSTER musician....
+Unixilandia Le premier titre est "Memphis Underground" composition de Herbie Mann , le second titre c'est "Soul Serenade" composition de King Curtis et Luther Dixon .
Richard Tee. Cornell Dupree. Like enjoying a couple ounces of cold fine wine and a little baby gouda cheese on a Saturday afternoon and holding hands with your sweetheart. Sadly missed.
