Herceg Novi or Херцег Нови (2024, Castelnuevo in Italian) is a coastal city in Montenegro at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor and Mount Orjen. The city has a population of 20,000. It is a popular tourist destination especially among Serbians, Russians and Ukrainians. Herceg Novi has two impressive defensive castles: Forte Mare and Kanli Kula. Herceg Novi was conquered by the Ottomans in 1482 and remained under Turkish occupation until 1687. The city became part of the Venetian Republic until 1797.
