Want to help support the channel? I've started a BuyMeaSpaceDonut page for small donations if you want to send a little this way. buymeacoffee.com/atomicsnackbar Also, I now have an Amazon list containing all things related to the Snack Bar. Whether it be stuff I want to cover, need for research, or just to dress up the Snack Bar itself, any bit is very appreciated, though by no means required. www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/374C1K1AC0HGR?ref_=wl_share

A big reason why I always try to highlight the suit actors when I can, they are such unsung heroes and go through so much that most folks just take for granted. Always a pleasure, Bandito.

I always think of the 1983 movie with Lou Ferrigno when I hear "Hercules" (also made by an Italian director, Luigi Cozzi). He also appeared as a character in Jason and The Argonauts (1963).

I can't help myself. I really can't but one teensy wiff of a sword and sorcery and muscular torso and I immediately recollect Peter Graves asking a young lad, " Do you like gladiator movies? " It's a knee jerk reaction - that I readily admit but it does tickle the ole hoo ha bone. I'm sure I've seen this but really have no memory of it. In Australia we had a thing on Sunday mornings called "Epic Theatre " and such offerings were its regular diet. Preferably ones with well endowed Italian virago's who would thrum their lines along with the heaving of their expansive chests. this film is a real trip! I get much more from Mario Bava when he Isn't doing horror. Things like "Planet of the Vampires" and "Danger: Diabolik". ..just the ingenuity of his framing, colour palette, and in-camera effects are inspiring. I wish all peplum films were as good as this one, but not many get the remastered Blu-ray treatment this one got either. Odd that Bava thought of this as a parody!! It's certainly a hoot, but it fulfils all the peplum requirements (with panache), without feeling particularly satirical.

If I'm not mistaken this was one of the Maciste films in which his name was changed for the American distribution, there was quite a number of Maciste films where the American distribution changed his name to Hercules or Samson etc because those names were more familiar to gringo audiences. Reg Park was once asked to compare his films with the Kevin Sorbo Hercules show and he said "We were obviously not doing the family friendly Hercules" . One last tidbit footage of the undead coming out from their tombs was "recycled" for the Mexican movie SANTO AND BLUE DEMON IN THE WORLD OF THE DEAD. Now if Santo and Blue Demon has teamed up with Reg Park... what a movie!

@ AtomicSnackBar - I think that this was actually supposed to be Steve Reeves' third Hercules movie, but that's when he got frustrated with being constantly dubbed even though he spoke English. It's a shame. It would have been the 'Steve Reeves Hercules Trilogy'. The names Maciste, Samson, and occasionally Goliath were more commonly used as the Peplum genre hit it's brief height. Hercules was just a more familiar name to American audiences and an easier sell.

Hercules In The Haunted World looks like a winner. Christopher Lee after his service in WW2, became a journeyman actor appearing in films all over Europe before he became Count Dracula(I had read that his breakout role was in the film Corridors Of Blood with Boris Karloff). Mario Bava. He is a great filmmaker who understands how to create atmosphere with the sets and photography. When I saw Three Faces Of Terror (aka Black Sabbath in America), it was very well made and it was a build up with each story in the film. Reg(or Reginald) Park was just as big as Steve Reeves to play Hercules(or Goliath, Ursus, Atlas, Samson and Machiste). Rosalba Neri was in the film Hercules And The Black Pirates(which was the first film in which Hercules wears pants). The unique style of those Italian sword and sandal films were that they were definitely films a viewer can get lost in as long as they are willing to take it all in. It’s not like a western or romance movie where everything is expected. Sword and Sandal has action, mystery, adventure, suspense and horror because the fate of humanity was in the hands of the gods of that time, and it didn’t take much to upset them. A challenge from the gods
@garyreid2178
@garyreid2178 3 месяца назад
A challenge from the gods happened to those that had the favor of the gods. There were blessings and curses from the gods. In other genres, the hero depended upon his skills and abilities. In Sword And Sandal, the hero is blessed with being a song of a god and sometimes, he is guided to perform good deeds. I remember one time in the early 90’s , TNT had a marathon of Hercules and Sword and Sandal films on New Year’s called the Herc-athon. To add to the fun and enjoyment, TNT encouraged viewers to lower the volume and ad lib their own dialogue. “Don’t worry. These movies can take it,” the announcer said.

Watched Hercules Unchained last night. I need to see the first one with Steve Reeves, but at present, I still think I lean to Reg Park. As a boy with no cable television at the time, I watched and took it all in like a sponge. I remember watching Hercules And The Black Pirates on cable television. Believe me, I enjoyed every minute of the movies because it was the only time I had the television to myself. My late older brother was really into Sword and Sandal and the chop socky king fu, spaghetti western or war film and blaxploitation movies that occasionally came on during the weekends. Steve Reeves’ Hercules set the stage for Sword and Sandal. It was even alleged that Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian wrote a screenplay at the time of Conan’s popularity as a pulp fiction character. But it never came to be. Probably because of budget constraints and maybe censorship issues. The movie The Whole Wide World with Vincent D’ Onofrio as Robert E. Howard showed how the author’s life and imagination crafted the life and the world of Conan the Barbarian.

@@AtomicSnackBar The genre was really started by Ulysses, with kirk douglas, of course, roman and greek epic movies were already hollywood's usual fare, most typically as bible movies, but then of course there was cleopatra or helen of troy. Then of course it was really started by Hercules with Reeves, and the italian strongman and adventure film was born. The reeves and park's captive women were more like adventure films with a stricter though liberty taken mythological basis, the writer of captive women calling it "creative mythology". Adventure films were common, especially of the King Solomons Mines, and of course Tarzan variety. Pulp fiction and stuff like Conan were also common. These Greek subjects also and perhaps creative costumes were well known even from Shakespeare. It spawned a legion of imitations in italy., with these kindof movies all being made, with subgenres of the generic sortof classical adventure film. Another subgenre was the barbarian theme, taking place in the late roman period, such as goliath and the barbarians, with reeves first. The reeves movies are somewhat more historical accurate, but none are strictly accurate and serious serious movies, nor academically accurate either, as most movies in hollywood aren't. A notable exception to this might be kubricks space odyssey, but then, of course, he does his kubrick things on that. this was all dino de laurentiis author of adventure and genre., and of course cecille be demille paved the way for it. These movies the reeves ones were moderately sucessful at the time and in the early sixties like Jason and the argonauts, these kindof classical adventure films and films of all such nature like sinbad were definitely the coin of the realm and in vogue.

There are typical themes in at least the Hercules proper ones. There is usually: A silly or doofy sidekick, sometimes a dwarf, sometimes as in Haunted world a half hobbit or idiot, there is Hercules' son, or real sidekick: often who gets a girl, in the reeves movies this is Ulysses, who doesnt have red hair like in Homer, in the reeves movies he gets the girls not boyish ulysses. There is Hercules' girl, Iole, this role is absent in the reg park movies, where he does interact with the evil queen, but his wife is at home, there is also of course usually an Evil queen, and there is often a prophetess or sybil.
