I have seen a couple crossings use prestressed concrete. You can cut them t length as needed and you do not need to stop the creek. They have 3 channels running through them so when the water is low it would run through and over when in a flood. Or you could put the crossways and just let the water go over. Either way you would most likely just have to flatten the creek bottom out. Saves routing the creek

Being a native american, I think you should trust your bison to reproduce when the time is right. Trust them to know how mild or not the coming winter will be. Seems like the last time you had late babies, the winter was mild. ✌✌

How about a precast concrete slab lowered onto the crossing area. That way there's no worry how you revert the creek.
@corbal09
@corbal09 3 часа назад
You might consider using a flat deck or trailer from a semi truck. Take wheels off and place it across the creek. It is heavy enough not to float downstream and you won't need a culvert. Build an access and exit ramp. Can get them 40' plus

I think you should not disrupt the set ways of the herd and leave the bulls in year around. It hasn't hurt anything and by separating them you can stress them out plus lose potential red dogs given the cycles of your females is so diverse.
@joywebster2678
@joywebster2678 3 часа назад
Cycles would change if bulls removed.
@Jules1280
@Jules1280 2 часа назад
Cycles can also be changed by giving the late breeding cows a shot of LUTALYSE in the spring to change their cycles and not have to pull the bulls. Maybe at the spring round up.

@@joywebster2678 No. Bison don't work that way. Nor do Suffolk sheep or Angus beef cattle.
@the_quaint_gypsy
@the_quaint_gypsy 45 минут назад
@@Jules1280 that would mean Dusty having to round up the Bison to put them through doc Parsons mobile shoot again and that's expensive. What's the time and effort of separating the cows from the herd and the stress that it would put upon the entire herd. And Dusty is doing it natural. I mean look at everything he's doing to regrow the natural grass of the area for the Bison to graze on. I understand that you're saying it for the spring Roundup but by then it's too late. I just think that's not a working suggestion. But everybody's entitled to their opinion.

My suggestion is to make you a form pour the slab near the creek, get some culvert steel pipes, place them in the creek, then with a crane, place the reinforced slab over the culvert pipes, and you make yourself a bridge. The problem with a slab placed in the water is concrete is it is porous and will start to deteriorate over time. The bridge, if anchored correctly, will prevent it from washing out during floods.

While you build something for your rigs, in the areas where the creek is shallow, would it be possible to slow up the creek a little? That way more water would seep deeper into the ground. The grass roots would like that and grow better. My grandpa just dumped logs over his creeks. Then he nailed big cross ties. But his creeks were not as wide as yours. He had one your width. It was fun. When we got close, he gunned the pickup and flew over and up. Us kids were in the back of the pickup.

What about concrete pavers instead of pouring a slab? Or Pour some slabs on dry ground, then, when cured, use the skid steer to drop 'em in a row across the creek. Then, if you want to change the plan and move the crossing 2 feet upstream, you can move 'em. Once you get them the way you want them, you could divert the water for a few days and pour a more permanent slab over the pavers that you put down. Or even concrete blocks set on their sides so the water runs through them? You could dig into the sides a little bit to allow a more even decent and ascent into and out of the creek. It'd make a ready made culvert. And completely moveable until you get it the way you want it.

I don't know what the regulations are in Oklahoma but here the creek may run through your property but the water in it does not belong to the land owner, so in order to use the water like you want you may need to get a permit or an agreement to be able to use it. dIt would be great if l you could utilize it to help the bison.

Yesterday I saw a short video on a Russian cattle feed solution for their snowy winters. They build a long grow room building and grow multilevel racks of 3x3 palates of what looks like wheat grass from seed in the palates, but might be some other protein rich grain or grass. When the grass gets maybe 6” or 8” tall they peel it out of the pallets. The roots keep it in a block and there is no dirt, so they must be just feeding it water with nutrients. They throw the grass blocks out in the feed troughs. And the cattle eat them roots and all. It looks healthy. And then they fill the shallow pallet up with seed again & water it. Sort of growing it like a Chia Pet. They probably get all the water from all that snow.

Couple of culverts covered by large rock (7-8) and then smaller rock (5-6) to fill the voids, then even smaller rock (3-4). Kind of like what Greg Judy does to feed. Water will feed thru the rock at low water times and run over the rock in high flood times. Slope so you can drive truck tractor across the bridge.

you can do a short term coffer damn, use a small flow though pipe, which you can then pour over that, then dis conect to get the water to come back to run over the slab. You will need to keep the slap wet anyhow so it will cure correctly! Sorry was married to a bridge engineer for 30 years!

If your bison was running wild they would have some babies born at this time of year so i would leave them as you are. I know a lot of ranchers pull their bulls so the calves are born only for a couple of months. Thing is they miss out on future livestock. If the cow does not calve they are shipped. I was on the understanding that bison were tough and could handle any temp. Am i wrong? I dont know. Do you have a place to raise a calve if the winter is to cold for them?

Dusty from my limited experience, the rancher had to fence the animals out of the creek and leave opening for them access the water. He only used a two wire fence in the tight brush with the creek trees as post whenever possible. The fence was not straight by any imagination. Of course that was both sides. You could obviously put a fence out further from the creek but that does not protect the flora.

Think about this... 1. Have the water run over the slab. Pipes will just fill with branches and silt especially when there are heavy rains. That would just be one more hassle cleaning out the culverts. 2. Pour your slab (or multiple slabs) away from the creek. Place large medal loops on the end of the slab(s) tied in with the rebar when pouring them so that a heavy chain can attach to the slab(s). Use a backhoe or dozer to dredge out the creek where you want the slab(s) to go. Stretch the chain across the creek and then drag the cured slabs into position using a pretty heavy-duty tractor or dozer. If you have problems with the slab(s) in the future, you can drag them out or if they settle a lot, just pour new slab(s) the same way as the old one(s) and drag them over the top of the old one(s). Best thing to do would be to dredge out the creek down to the bedrock, then measure how thick OR how many slabs you'll need. That would avoid a settling problem.
