Real "number doctors" are terrifying. I was a mathematics major and every now and then some instructor or other student would drop some true savant stuff in class that was terrifying. I had a female statistics professor solve a equation in her head that included factorials that had everyone in the class sitting there in stunned silence after we had punched in the numbers into our calculators. How do you solve something like the square root of 56! in your head? I'll never find what I witnessed as anything but inconceivable!!!

If you only knew what I saw when I was a child when I am now 77 years old now but back then I saw a lot of injustice back in Miami, FL and questioned my mother why black people that had food could not eat inside- they were able to buy food at the restaurants but had to eat outside on the steps. Talk about what I saw as unfair truly bothered me but later - I didn't recognize bigotry until I was much older because I never though Hispanics would be insulted by whites telling us they didn't trust us due to being "thieves and sluts." That is what I learned but tried to ignore these prejudices' since i had to work to provide financial assistance to my parents. My understanding of "computers" (the 'human calculators' meaning) is that they were assigned the boring-but-necessary "rote" mathematical work, while so-called "imaginative" mathematics were done by men with degrees in Mathematics and such - hence Paul's (Jim Parsons character's) comment about how the "mathematics doesn't exist" being more about a "computer" trying to create one, than that one couldn't be created.

Interesting question...these women led the way for the rest of the 400k people across the country in many supporting industries who had the smarts and commitment to get the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions off the ground. We owe them much for their efforts to advance space science.
