Thanks so much for all your support/encouragement since my last video. I'm starting the Camino Frances next week and will be uploading occasional videos going forward in which I talk to the camera in much the same way as the above video. This will mean a different format with less editing/cinematic footage and more diary-like videos like this one in which I talk about various topic of interest. I really enjoy making these types of videos and they are reasonably quick/easy to upload which is why I have decided on this format. Thanks again and I appreciate all the kind and interesting comments you have been leaving on my videos this past year ;) Derek
A placid Irishman who examines, explores and thinks. You defy the stereotype of the craic, boozing and cursing Irish man that most people think of. The purity of your thoughts and reflections typify what a real Irish man is made of. We all need to go on a long journey... question, experience, learn, share and meet others of different cultures and traditions. Thank God for this wonderful life and creation that we are privileged to spend a short period in. Your thoughts represent what many, perhaps most of us feel but can not unravel or find meaning.
Thank you for this series and thank you for being so open and honest about your inner thoughts and feelings and for opening up a discussion about mental health and wellbeing. It's a refreshing change. It's ok to not be ok and it's ok to talk about not being ok. Good man yourself and good luck on the next trip. Regards Darren
Just happened to come across your videos today Derek and I’m blown away at the honesty and openness coupled with the self awareness and simplicity of your messages. You are a beautiful human being and I’m finding you at a time where I need to be reminded of your messages again. Wishing you all the best and hoping one day I may get to meet you in person for some thought provoking dialogue. Take care and keep you the great work because your message is so unique in todays world.
I can relate to your break. Anxiety has dogged me for years and stopped me from doing stuff, at times. My constant blanket was routine and familiarity, but like yourself, I pulled myself back onto the road. I followed my father's ethos that the only difference between a rut and a grave was five and a half feet. I just wonder at the beauty around me and live with the noise. One of your past videos resonated hugely with me and that was the sense of calm and home, in the Blankets. I view your posts as inspirational and motivational at times, so I thank you.
Thank you for your 10 videos Walking the Ireland way, I found them inspiring, interesting, motivating, funny, relaxing and entertaining! I think you have found your soul’s pathway in life and I think it takes alot of guts to be so open and honest. You ‘walk the talk’. A tip I can offer with anxiety (because I have that sometimes aswell) is to: close your eyes and feel where you feel the anxiety (where in your body - head, stomach, heart, …), go to that place in your body and welcome it, swim in it, let it flow all over you. Then ask yourself how does that make you feel ? - relieved, angry, happy, sad, etc. Welcome that emotion and ask yourself “what do I need?” Your answer is the key to unlock the “anxiety door”…Take care and take the next step, you don’t need to see the whole staircase😊Good luck with all your new adventures!
This was a great video. Cant put into words but...to hear your thoughts and difficulties is uplifting. I suffer with depression anxiety...its brave of you to be open. It makes a real video. Cant wait for the next...get in your groove.. and shine on...i pray for you..god bless
Well, I've been enjoying your Ireland way walk, the videos are great. My mate Paul put me onto them. You're a natural storyteller Derek, the video diary is very watchable. Well done with your honesty and well walked and told. Reading the comments here and on your video's the support for your journey is immense. Well done , Best regards from Perth, Western Australia.
Hi, I just wanted you to know since I picked up on your channel via Facebook on your Camino walk I’ve been watching with interest and your words ring true. You really are inspiring and are helping so I look forward to continuing watching and listening. You’re a good man. Thank you 🙏🏻
ahhh! Derek! you are not just a person videoing in his garden. It looks as if you have found a companion! Now, to the central point...you matter! I have spent a lifetime telling people 'we will figure it out' 'no matter what'. You know from your travels that there is always a way, and so, too, with life. Ups, downs, rounds, and rounds, just like walking, just like life. Embrace them all, love each moment...it will all be ok. Many prayers, my friend, come visit in San Francisco, there is a bed waiting for you...
Hi Derek. I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety struggles. You've got a very gentle spirit and you're such a blessing to those who appreciate nature and the outdoors. I would encourage you to seek and know Jesus. He has become my total source of peace. "Come to me all who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest, take My yoke upon you and learn from Me for I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest for your soul. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light" Matthew 11:28. God bless you.
We missed your videos a lot from this trip. I know it's lots of work to film it all, edit and upload it.. it also takes lots of power from the devices.. we tried to film 12 days adventure, little through hike in Ireland and I appreciate your videos even more after I tried it myself. Just try and do your best during the Camino. I am waiting full of excitement to see what you will experience during your adventure and believe me there are lots of people cheering for you. Your videos and stories are very inspiring. We are following in your footsteps and many people do so too... Best luck and keep going 💘😻💜
I had my own issues half way thru following your journey and I also have been 'not ok' !! Had an allergy to a pill(have not had such a serious reaction in many many yrs)and I'm still dealing with the oedema( all over body swelling) 😭😭😭😭. Lots luv man! Life is odd. Can b amazing. Can b tough! ALWAYS STAY HOPEFUL AS THINGS ALWAYS TURN GOOD IN THE END!!
So happy for you!... for your insight, determination and sharing it all with us. Like it's been said, you've been an inspiration for everyone who feels unsure or a little afraid to try. Way to go, Derek! Keep on keepin' on.👍
Fair play to you Derek for the honest and heartfelt words.. keep strong 💪 The glass is half full mate .. head good.. body good.. feet good ..Emma good .. lol fair play to ya ..all good. Love your videos and we look forward to them. Delboy.
Thanks Derek for the wonderful thoughts. I remember feeling those anxious times during walk around Shikoku Japan 88 temples. I also did the TGO across Scotland but mentally stopped before going up the Cape Wrath trail due to the same kinds of feelings you describe. The more time on the trail the better but still sometimes there will be clouds in ones head. It is great that you finished the journey and despite having to move my SlíEireann to April next I am determined and keen. Keep safe and well. Go n-eiri an bothar leat ‘s go meirimid beo an am seo arís.
Congratulations on finishing the walk & congratulations on doing what was best for you when you needed it. I'm just back from my first solo wild camp so do understand some of those demons you got to overcome. Your right to change the format for the videos, I really have enjoyed them but it's too much work to do while on the trail! Looking forward to the Camino trip, best of luck 👍
Hey Derek, I'm lying here in my tent on dursey Island after just completing the e8. A walk that you and your videos inspired me to do. I've said it before and ill say it again, your an inspiration to so many people and a gent. Thanks for being you ✌
@@DerekCullenOutdoors hey derek, quick question for you. As i said I have just finished the e8 and I am starting the Ireland way heading north tomorrow. I have a pair of saucony trainers same as yours, would you recommend switching from the salomon boots I have been wearing for the terrain on the Ireland way?
Great stuff Derek I've been following your journey on Instagram and RU-vid for the duration. Remember keep the RU-vid channel going 😉. Congrats on completion and great to see good people like your GF behind you.
Hi Derick. I wanted to tell you about the Ho oponopono Hawaiian prayer of forgiveness. It has helped me so much with my life and getting through some rough spot and allowing the miracle to flow. I’m happy you finished the trek. That is so important and a total inspiration for so many following you.
Well done you. The inner journey can be far more difficult and scary and you face it and grow. By talking about it you bring light for others. You are a kind soul thank you.
Hi Derek, thank you for your honesty and the genuine reflection of this video. Since doing my first camino with my dad in 2015, and three others starting solo since, I am a great believer that we are the closest to what we really want to be on the trail. That does come with anxiety, and although I'm not a wild camper, walking some of Wales' less well-marked trails does give me anxiety too, especially when you're in the hills and well away from civilization. Really looking forward to following your Camino, Ultreia mi amigo.
Well done Derek on completing the Ireland Way. How did the Altra shoes do the last few days of the walk? Thinking of getting a pair of those myself. Good luck on Camino.......Ultreia!
I’m glad you’re home and happy. I’m glad you’ve got an ‘Emma’ to be home and happy with! You’re very courageous ( courage is not the absence of fear...it is action, in spite of it!) you are a warrior, a spiritual warrior...be proud of yourself! I think it would be interesting for you to contact Croi Nua in Galway (it runs personal development courses...it has a course run by Benny Mc Hale called ‘the Enneagram’ (part 1)... I think you’ll find out a lot about your fears and anxieties there AS THEY RELATE TO YOU. I’ve done this course 3 times...and the other parts too. I wish you well, you’ve had a hero’s journey...and you are entitled to a hero’s homecoming. Enjoy your back garden...and your household luxuries!
You are some person Derek. Such an inspiration. I hope to do the Camino myself someday when covid and restrictions are a distant memory 🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️
So glad to hear that you got back in the road and completed the trip. I so enjoyed following the first part and was beginning to wonder what had happened. All the best and looking forward to your next adventure!
Well done Derek for completing the walk through Ireland! Most importantly, it’s great you were able to know what was right for you and to follow through. That’s the biggest gift in life that I’ve found to date…that same prompt got me out wild camping for the first time and I’m so glad I listened. A fitting ending to one journey which will lead to the next. 🤗
I’d be afraid travelling through Africa too, well hope your life improves, it will life is beautiful, it’s to be treasured , I loved watching you blogs , what a beautiful ending your so lucky take care I’ll say a little prayer for you 🙏

God is the answer. That is my conclusion after 56 years of wandering in this world. I am happy that you regained your own balance. However you got it. Good luck. You are a well meaning person
@@DerekCullenOutdoors I live in Cizur Menor, by the Camino Frances. I will be at home from now up to 1first August. Just in case you need help, or accomodation.
