We can go back a little further. The Cavaquinho came to Madeira from Braga, Portugal, as it did to many places around the world during the explorer times of the late 1400's and 1500's. Thus, one of it's common names on Madeira is Braguinha, meaning little one from Braga. Indonesia gave it their own name, Keroncong, but it's still called a Cavaquinho in Cape Verde and Brasil, because they still speak Portuguese.
