The hot water can freeze mid air because it creates a lot of vapor that instantly freezes. These small frozen crystals serve as starters for bigger crystals to form. The technical term is nucleation. The colt water has nothing that can instantly freeze, thus no small crystals to freeze around. So it does freeze, but from a state of vapor that started it all.

It all depends on what you wear normally and what you’d need to compensate without heat. Warm blankets or sleeping bags are also very smart. I have Walls Blizzard Proof Arctic suit with -200 F freezer boots and Sub Zero leather hunting gloves with four inch gauntlets. Topped off with matching hood, leather mask, and goggles. Other cold weather gear includes candles, Ohio blue tip matches, chemical warming patches for feet, hands, and body, flares, reflective gear, two shovels( short & long handle), and two fifty foot tow straps. I've been carrying this and more since the Winter of '74 including when I lived in Dallas during the ice storms of '82 thru '84. The hardest Winter was in '78. Everyone thought I was crazy until they got stuck and called me to dig and pull them out.

I’m in Manitoba, Canada. It’s been -24f and a -40f windchill all week. This is normal. In our car for winter is a foldable shovel, candles, blankets, first aid, jumper cables, boots/snowpants. All the time! We also need to plug in the cars to keep the engines/coolant warm so it starts in the mornings

yes, winter gear in car: snow shovel, food, candles, blanket, fire starter things, first aid kit, ropes for towing cars, jumper cables and more. the extra jacket is not neccesary since thats what you wear already

In cold weather, we have things like candles, sleeping bags, beef jerky, extra socks, mitts, shovel traction grips, flares, matches, first aid kit, tow rope, jumper cables, flashlight, water, propane heat buddy, chem hand warmers. Basically a trunk full of stuff for smart folk. City folk just don't get it.

I carry a gear bag with snowmobile suit, long underwear, goggles, hood, hat, 2 pair of gloves, boots, and goggles. Besides the 2 blankets that are there year round. My daughter is now 36. When her and her mom were ready to leave the hospital after birth it was -20F (not wind chill). The nurses were all worried about them leaving in that weather. I went out and brought the 3/4 ton Suburban up to the door and carried my wifes snowmobile gear in. The nurses started asking me to come back and give them rides home.

When I was stationed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I carried a wool blanket, candles and K rations in my car along with my flashlight, jumper cables and tools. I installed a CB radio which the police monitored. I was issued some really good cold weather gear too.

General rule of thumb is bring your jacket with you whenever you travel, extra pair of hat and gloves sometimes socks. I usually have an extra pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt or jacket in my pickup and a blanket

My folks drilled it into our heads first of all you don't go out in the extreme cold or blizzard if you can help it but yes always keep emergency kit in the car, shovel, ice scraper, snacks, water, emergency blanket, other warm clothes/blankets, maybe sand tubes, hand warmers, all that stuff. We got down to negative 45 wind chill this time. As a teen my car battery froze at -65 wind chill years ago.
