In this video, I'm going to explain why most people probably should not buy a digital camera in 2024. I will also offer a personal insight into why some individuals, including myself, still prefer to use professional photo gear despite the ease of using smartphones for taking photos.

In addition to taking great photos, your phone is also waterproof, and shockproof if you have a simple case on it. That makes it a no-brainer for a lot of situations.

I can't believe that people fall for this "buy this, don't buy this" routine. People want everything now and without putting any effort in at all. I do use my phone to take some of my photos, but I'd say that dedicated cameras are always going to be in my life regardless of what any RU-vidr or so-called influencer thinks.

For me, I been liking taking pictures on my phone, so that's another indication it's a good idea to get a camera. Doesn't have to be latest and greatest, as long as it does the deed

Yes, definitely try to get an access to any type of camera and just play around with it to see if you like it or not. Hopefully you’ll enjoy taking photos with a camera as much ad I do :)

One of the best parts of using a camera is ergonomics, WAY bettee than a phone

For me, when I take photos with my iPhone and when I take photos with my cameras, the process is just completely different. With an iphone I just snap photos, without thinking about composition, lighting and so forth. On the other hand, when I shoot with my cameras, I take time, I am more conscious and aware of the environment, lighting conditions, etc. This in turn result in much better photos… hence, the approach is just totally different.

@@ohmycamera also I got a low end phone so the cameras are crap hahahaha, but that's a good point

I don't need a digital camera. I purchased a film camera

Nice one! I’ve never tried shooting with a film camera. 📸 It is actually something that I plan on trying in the nearest future! Whenever I watch Peter McKinnon recent videos, where he talks about how film cameras have changed his approach to photography and made him fall in love with the craft once again, I just want to go and get one too 🤣

The best phone in the world doesnt even come close to the image quality of a good entry to mid level mirorless camera setup. I see it every day on my screen. If you only watch the picture on the phone screen its ofc not that visible.
@ohmycamera
@ohmycamera 2 месяца назад
True that! But even when I import photos taken with a proper digital camera onto my iPhone, I can still see a clear difference… and i am not talking about the technical side of things, but rather the overall photo - composition, lighting, etc. When I shoot with an iPhone, I don’t spend much time thinking about it, hence the photos end up being very standard.

I've started my photography journey over a decade ago, and I strongly agree with you. Smartphones are so good nowadays that it answers more than 90% of most people's need without the hassle of nailing the focus, exposure parameters and such, making the creative process much smoother (like modern cars which are decreasing drivers' workload making them focus more on the driving part). If I didn't have any specific needs, I wouldn't have bought any camera at all. However, since I grew up enjoying photography with these amazing piece of technology (specifically Pentax DSLRs), I always need a real camera in my bag even if I find my self using them less than before (anything from Micro Four Thirds with a professional lens is fine). They offer operational tactility that no phones I've used ever matched.

Totally agree with you! The tactile feeling of adjusting camera settings is something I forgot to mention in my video… It also reminds me of listening to music on a vinyl turntable vs. consuming songs on Spotify. The difference is enormous, and not specifically in the sound, but rather in the approach. Hard to explain with words, really, but I can definitely relate to what you’re saying! 👌

Awesome video and great story. When I bought my first digital camera some 15 years ago, I had several long periods when it just collected dust on the shelf, but it all changed when smaller mirrorless cameras became mainstream. 😊 keep up the great work!

Phone cameras have had the capability for quite some time, and it's widely recognized that they consistently improve. However, using cameras is way more fun!
@ohmycamera
@ohmycamera 2 месяца назад
Definitely. Plus, as I mentioned in one if my previous comments, the approach to taking photos with a phone vs. camera is just so much different for me… when I take photos with an iPhone, I can never be bothered to apply my photography knowledge, I just press the button and snap a photo, and in most cases it ends up being just a very regular photo…

Unlike car review, Camera review is as subjective as it gets. People buy cameras for different personal reasons. Try taking a photo with a phone using just one hand while zooming in and you'll see what I mean. Don't you think it's best to give the viewers the fact, preferably from your own experience, and let them decide for themselves, rather than telling them what they shouldn't do.

I'm in the process of selling my Fujifilm X100V, not because it's a bad camera, it's because the form factor just didn't work for me. I wanted to love it, but I've realised that the Panasonic Lumix cameras just fit me like a glove. Got my eye on picking up the GX80 🙌
@ohmycamera
@ohmycamera 2 месяца назад
Yeah, it is very individual... especially if you have larger hands, it may not be that comfortable for you to use Fujifilm X100V. For me the form factor of Fujifilm is just right, I love it. However, when I tried to use my dad's camera, namely Sony RX100, I noticed that it was just way too small and uncomfortable for me to use it. The dials are just so tiny, making it super hard to adjust the settings, and so forth.

@@ohmycamera exactly. A horseshoe thumb grip helped a little, but it ultimately just wasn't the right fit for me. I think I got caught up in the hype and specs as well. I started looking back on the photos I took over the years and some of the best shots I've ever taken were on a cheap fixed lens Lumix. That told me everything I needed to know. Pixel count and specs aren't everything, the enjoyment factor plays a massive part.
@ohmycamera
@ohmycamera 2 месяца назад
@@timporter definitely. I own three different cameras: Sony A7III, Sony A7C, and Fujifilm X100V. My favorite is the Fujifilm X100V. I love it because it feels like a game to shoot with this camera. I also love the fact that I can take candid photos of people, and even if they notice me taking photos, in most cases, they don't mind. However, this camera is definitely not for everyone. It has a fixed lens, which most people would find a huge disadvantage, and as you've mentioned, the form factor of this camera is not for everyone. But it works really, really well for me. :) I've never used Panasonic cameras before, so I can't say much about them, unfortunately. But the most important factor is to make sure that you love your camera-how it looks, how it feels in your hands, and how easy it is for you to change the settings, etc.

i can't take good pictures by looking at a screen. i need an OVF or EVF, that's why i bought my cameras. i seriously struggle with that, either a smartphone or a professional camera doesn't matter, i can't shoot by looking at LCD screen.
@ohmycamera
@ohmycamera 2 месяца назад
I must be honest, I take most of my photos by looking at the LCD screens of my cameras :) It is just more convenient for me because I wear glasses 🤓 Everyone has different reasons why they prefer digital cameras over smartphones 🤌
@denizkendirci

@@ohmycamera in this case, age and habits are also a facor i guess, younger people are more accustomed to shoot by screen. older people didn't have smartphones or lcd screen digital cameras in their primes, so it might feel weird for them not to use viewfinder.

This is bad advice. You must be very new to photography. Edit: years? It took you _years_ to understand photography? I think photography might not be for you, dude.

You have really good points. I would say the caveat to that, which you know for sure too, is that Iphone or Samsung Galaxy just can't take good low-light images or video because of the sensor size, and also due to having no option to interchange lenses for optical zoom (and lower quality lenses I guess ?) you can't take photos of the moon for example that are detailed. I had the Sony alpha 7R which was released in November 2013, and it takes much more detailed photos in low light or the moon then my Iphone 13, and better photos for large prints. Yet after my long rant, I do agree with you that most people will not use these features as they just use point and shoot photos in acceptable light of friends or selfies, and the algorithms in phones became so good.
