In this video, you will hear the MD cues at specific times. We are sharing this so that you can hear how Elevation Worship flows in a given moment/set. Pastor Steven Furtick will come up on stage and then the fun begins. Hope this helps you understand a little more of what's going on!
Here Again, and all the Elevation Worship live drum videos were captured on Elevation Worship's Hallelujah Here Below Tour stop in Toronto (October 16, 2018).
HUGE thanks to Luke Anderson, Garrett Davis, and Jonathan Mix for their collaboration with the project.
Also, a massive shoutout and special thanks to Brandt Andersen ( / brandt_a ) for offering to edit all the videos for us.

For those asking about the numbers: What you hear is the MD (Music Director) making calls using the Nashville number system. Essentially the MD is guiding the band through a somewhat spontaneous moment as Steven Furtick comes up on the stage. The numbers he's calling are in reference to the Nashville number system - essentially each number (1 through 7) corresponds with the note or chord in that position on the scale. So - since they're playing in the key of D - when he calls out 1, 7, 6, 5, 4 on the bridge it indicates that the band will play D, C#, Bm, A, G. All of the numbers you hear are the MD referencing which notes/chords the band should switch to next. It's a super simple and intuitive way for the team to communicate, allowing them to call out the progression with the use of quick numbers or hand signals where it would be tough or impossible otherwise!
@F3ARLESSadventures
@F3ARLESSadventures 5 лет назад
That's nashville numbering correct?
@TotalEvo7
@TotalEvo7 5 лет назад
Correct. That way, the musicians are not relying solely on conventional notes, but if they know all the notes and scales by heart and mind, the Nashville Number System makes it super effective to do changes quickly, especially if it's another singer performing the song other than the main one.
@jonathancole3340
@jonathancole3340 5 лет назад
@Anthony Loma haha, thought the same thing. we've always used numbers to represent chords built on the scale degrees. but the nashville peeps can call it what they want lol
@MrVoidFire
@MrVoidFire 5 лет назад
@@jonathancole3340 Well technically Nashville developed it in the 50s and its basically a number notation of scale degrees. But if you have some knowledge of music theory this catches on pretty quickly and is helpful for band communication in a worship context.

@@ObpcAgropol Nashville Numbering System, used historically and most commonly in recording studios. Each Number corresponds to a note which is all decided ahead of time. So here's an example: 1/A, 2/B, 3/C and so on from 1-7 let's say...if he say's "3 6 7.......1 7 4" it would translate to "C F G.....A G D". The reason it's so much easier for this setting (and in recording) is if you have like A minor or major, flats or sharps - instead of saying the whole note sequence you can designate B sharp as 1, C as 2, D minor as 3 and save time by saying the numbers. Having incredible musicians, well-trained and prepared and great chemistry can lead to awesome spontaneity!

I love it , I do the same at my church. Right now we can't afford in ear systems so I have to use my hands to communicate. We've developed our own hand signals when build ups come, being (huge/big) which basically means that the drummer and everyone needs to give a nice fat thick sound using his symbals, kick patterns and snare. I also use my hands to show the number system and the timing in which it should happen. I make a fist to end the song on either a 1 chord (if in the key of C would be Cmajor) or a 4 chord (in the key of C would be a Fmajor). Keep it up @Worship Drummer!

And big rooms also contribute to the big sound. It is a Ludwig raw brass snare drum 14x6.5. All the videos I’ve looked up on this snare it just sounds amazing I’m just a Ludwig guy their snares have a certain sound to them I can’t explain

This is awesome. Cool to hear someone else's experience/approach. I find it interesting (at ~ 5:15) how he just calls the chords in time. I really prefer when they call the progression stack. Like, "okay guys.. 4 5 6 1 7 4", for example. Is he maybe making the chord progression up as he goes? Or is this a specific part of the song? Good stuff. I'd love to hear the MD calls during an upbeat song. Thanks for sharing!

So the obvious question would be “at what point do all the chord call outs and direction for verse, chorus and backing tracks become a distraction to worship for the players and singers?” This is not a complaint- just trying to gain understanding and knowledge. I’ve been a worship drummer for 25 years and am always willing to adapt and learn new ways of doing things. It just seems to me that a level has been reached where the players and singers may have their focus taken off the One they are there for and onto the quality and excellence of the music itself. Of course this is only my external perspective but it would be nice to hear from those on the inside how they find space to worship. I’ve always believed we reserve the “work” of worship for rehearsal where we flesh out the quality and excellence (well after our own private practices) so that during our service times we don’t have to think much about the music but have space to focus on God instead. Thoughts, anyone?

Steven Shauf I have been a worship drummer for 15 years. My church recently started using tracks and such in the last 2 years. We don’t do any kind of calling out of chords ect at this point. However, at first some found vocal queues and click ect distracting. What we found a couple years later is it keeps everyone so much more tight. Our bass player told me when we started doing this stuff and people were complaining about the distraction that it is not OUR job to worship on Sunday mornings. Our job is to BRING the congregation to worship. If we happen to be able to worship in the process that is awesome! However, we should be feeding ourselves through the week with worship so we can pour out from our full cup to the congregation. I look at it as a sacrifice for serving our Lord. I cherish the Sunday’s now that I don’t play so I can worship. But I still love playing as well for different reasons. It’s fulfilling to me to know I’m helping God bring folks to worship. Just some thoughts!

Keep in mind a couple of things specifically as the it relates to tracks and MDs with live instruction...Elevation is a multi campus with all campuses (each with live band) being led from the main campus (or so I’ve been told). There would be no easy way to coordinate all bands to take simultaneous queuing about what’s happening live at the main campus without some live direction. Also once you go to a backing tracks and click...the only way to have “spontaneous” moments would be to have someone calling the diversion from the programmed track. The church I play for uses tracks w/ programmed click and queues, but no live changes. I used to be opposed to playing to backing tracks, but after several years with tracks I barely notice them while I’m playing...unless there is some auxiliary percussion part playing something differently than what I’ve worked out for the kit. I normally request that extra percussion parts be taken out. That said without the tracks on weeks where we didn’t have a keyboard in rotation (which happens from time to time) we wouldn’t sound nearly as full...it just helps with consistency...

Paul, I think this depends on the individual group. It is a good question, but..I'm not really sure what the guy on the mic is talking about...at my church, we don't even run a click track...but let me say, I believe the most important thing is: connect with the group you are a part of, whatever ministry, and even LOVE those around you (as Jesus said, "by this will all men know"...), AND, pray the Holy Ghost for your group and your time, in the impact of it (we MUST decrease--he MUST increase). Bless, in Jesus name

Someone else here mentioned the "Nashville numbers system" though
@MadeByIsmael
@MadeByIsmael 5 лет назад
Idk about this Nashville system everyone in the comments is talking about. But it's just simple music theory. The idea is that just like how you can describe a scale as "do re mi fa ..." And you can describe it as "A B C D...", You can also describe it as "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8". I MD at my church so the musicians know that if we are in the key of C, and I scream 6, that the next chord they should play is the 6th degree of the scale(A minor). If I say 1, then they play the first degree of the scale which is C.
