This song changed my life. No shit. I awoke to this on a Jay Leno Tonight Show. Aoife, Chris, Edgar, Stuart became part of my passion. Yo-Yo was raised much higher on my altar. Even my insane appreciation of bluegrass music really began that night. I fight the tears in my eyes as I sing along.."fall not winter, spring not summer, cool not cold. Where it's warn not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old". This song truly changed my life. It's not been the same ever since, and I am ever thankful.
This song makes me realize how Americana/folk will always be a powerful genre in modern music. Props to Chris and Aoife for constructing such a mesmerizing piece. Flawlessly executed, and boy is it fun to watch them hit the chorus at 100MPH. Such intensity, talent, and power in this whole group. Wowza.
Aoife's voice is amazing. When I first heard her singing on Crooked Still's rendition of 'Come in My Kitchen' I was blown away. It is such a gift to watch artists who are so in the zone -- and to watch and hear the energy build and build is astonishing. It doesn't get any better.
They just put a smile on your face. The ability to get together with such amazing musicians and jam and just discover what comes out. I cannot imagine how fun that was. Aoife O'Donovan also has an amazing voice just beautiful, like it was created for this song.
Just saw Chris and Aoife in Raleigh last weekend. It was wonderful. Can’t express how much I love their music. Aoife’s voice. Chris’s musicianship. I get the feeling that Chris never sleeps. And he’s clearly obsessive over tuning, just like all the other greats.
Crooked still has been my go to favorite bluegrass band for years, then I found Goat rodeo and was blown away that legends like Yo Yo Ma and Chris Thile are working together , and now this is the cross over of the century
It's over, and you realize it should have been longer, so you listen to it again. And again, and..... The open back banjo sound is perfect in this song.
This seems like they've reached some sort of pinnacle of artistry, some peak I haven't heard in a long time, if ever. Yo Yo Ma and everyone here shine so amazingly. I can only thank each one of you and whoever else was responsible for getting this incredible performance accomplished and sent out to the world.
It's been over 3 years and this is still my favorite song ever. A perfect balance of vocals and instrumental, with no one battling for the lead. Thank you for giving us such an amazing piece!
This song and album have lead me on a neo bluegrass journey in its fifth year. Just a great ride including Sarah Jarosz, Aoife , Chris, I’m with Her, Nickel Creek , Crooked Still, Steve Martin , The Felktones , the Kruger Bros. So rich with great music
I fracking love this album! I bought it when it first came out.. always loved Yo Yo Ma.. He's such a diverse artist. Love the flavor .. like old mountain music.
I was blessed to see Chris Thile & Aoife O’Donovan perform this LIVE backed up by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (her husband, Eric Jacobsen, is the conductor/music director :) last Saturday, Feb 25, 2023. It was a larger than life, yet meditative, experience in contrast to the sublime intimate studio moment. Not sure if this was their intention but my response to this amazing song, as a Christian, was to challenge myself to do better with what time remains to me on Earth, reconcile with those I may have wronged (or not forgiven) and not distract myself with narcissistic excuses. Am I reading too much into it?
This one's the standout on a GREAT album, and made me purchase it on iTunes. I really can't decide which artist impresses me the most on this album, or this song. Ms. O'Donovan, the guest vocalist, had to pack a lunch to keep up with this set of gents... and she managed superbly. She and Chris Thile are squeezing every last bit out of themselves for this. Which is what it takes to make something that hits me so squarely where I live. Great music. Great video. It's great to be alive.
I love how the music starts with a quiet layer, then another & another, building plaintive urgency with the voices, then Yoyo’s cello, but really catching fire with Edgar bringing in the base rhythm…🤗
These vocalists are amazing !! Well and Yo-Yo ... (goes without saying) With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed Between here and heaven between the wait and the wedding for as long as we both shall be dead to the world beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm We can practice our lines 'til we're deaf and blind to ourselves to each other where it's Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it's warm not hot have you all forgotten that we're getting old With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow we are staking our claim On ground so fertile we forget who we've hurt along the way and reach out for a strange hand to hold someone strong but not bold enough to tear down the wall 'Cause we're not lost enough to find the stars aren't crossed why align them why fall hard not soft into Fall not winter spring not summer cool not cold And it's warm not hot have we all forgotten that we're getting old And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold And it’s warm, not hot, has everyone forgotten that we’re getting old And it’s fall, not winter, spring, not summer, cool, not cold And it’s warm, not hot, have we all forgotten that we’re getting old ~Chris Thile Welcome
Spectacular. And for the trolls out there who think Aoife doesn't belong in their company - don't you think they had options? I personally love Aoife's voice and her songwriting, but I appreciate that she might not be to everyone's taste. Fine, but seriously, there are four world-class musicians in this video who have a world of choice, and for whatever crazy reason decided they'd like to record with her. But hey, this is RU-vid, feel free to declaim on your superior taste in music.
Very well said, and thanks on Aoife's behalf. This is my first time seeing/listening to her and I think it works beautifully ~ plus she co-wrote it with Chris. There is a lovely rendition on Google Music of this where you can definitely see the chemistry in singing this together for both of them.
This is my first time listening to her as well - that I'm aware of, and I must say, it is a real treat here, but I can also tell where they're helping to carry her a little, not in a bad nor condescending way at all though that I can tell, just giving and complementary to the overall quality of the piece. If anyone is taking issue with her here, I can only guess that they don't understand nor have an ear for real music, maybe only music theory, or something. These guys are so far up on their game that without a doubt I'm sure this is a breath of fresh air to them, and the lot of them shine brilliantly here. This is raw talent and mastered skill at its best.
I must be a musical idiot or else all these critics are fools because I don't see any reason to think she's not good enough to play with them. It's a beautiful song and everyone performs their parts wonderfully.
