Dear Melissa, I have to tell you, the out going messages that you give at the end of your vlogs are the best part of your videos. Your messages are always so inspiring they pull at my heart strings every time. I’ve never seen any RU-vid channel that does what you do, it is so unique and refreshing. I always look forward to seeing your videos. Just wanted you to know, you touch people. Shannon

As an engineer, i would recommend that you take a couple of elevation shots on those piers just so you can monitor for any more settlement before it becomes a problem, hopefully most of it has occurred already…do you have a surveyors level?
@geraldrhodes5948
@geraldrhodes5948 2 года назад
Curious: is that plate sufficient to fix the original problem? I'm assuming the problem was nothing more than dirt settling? How much settling can one expect for this type of situation?
@dunep6465
@dunep6465 2 года назад
Whoever put the footing in is the culprit. 2-1/4" settlement is absolutely unacceptable. Where were the Inspectors?
@stevoschannel4127
@stevoschannel4127 2 года назад
I dont think that roof got much snow load this year, probably not enough bearing or maybe some deeper soft soil…nows the time to fix it, if it gets loaded in the winter and settles it would be bad: i was thinking do new piers further in, put some kickers in above…not hard, just go to a depth where you aren’t depending on end bearing?
@dunep6465
@dunep6465 2 года назад
@@stevoschannel4127 Agreed, but it should have been done by the foundation crew and verified by the Soils engineer and Inspector. That steel shim probably isn't the answer. That's a quick fix for now.
@jeremykelly7311
@jeremykelly7311 2 года назад
See my thread above where I suspect Jeremy responded - seems whoever dug foundation over dug and then backfilled (mistake). Agree I worry there may be additional settling. Whoever dug their foundation should be accountable.

Where is your grass mower? 🤔 Those support beams should've been installed on impacted ground and rock/concrete to begin with. Did they do that? What about the other side? It is wonderful to see you doing more family things together and being outside. You are building your house, maintenance will fall by the wayside. Cut yourselves some slack. These hay, grass, weeding projects do build up, but they harm nothing. When you get moved into the house, you will have a barn. Peace. Breathe.

Jeremy, I think the real root of the problem lies within the concrete footing below the post. The raising of the truss will only be a temporary fix until next winter. I would suggest that you consult a structural engineer for such a crucial element of the building structure, especially since it is tied into a main wall. My suggestion (disclaimer: I am not a structural engineer) would be to increase the area of your footing on both sides. This is a major fix and would require digging around the footing, drilling and dowelling in rebars and casting around the foiting..to make the area twice as large. This will reduce the pressure on the ground from the above structure. Another possible solution could be to jack up the structure similar to how it was done in the video , and add a 2'×2' 1/4" thick square steel plate BENEATH the 4x4 column plate. Be sure to prime and paint it properly to protect it from ust
@barbaralewis3281
@barbaralewis3281 2 года назад
It will be money VERY WELL SPENT to hire a structural engineer! Since there's no telling what other unseen problems there might be. It's thought to be the problem of the beam; it's thought to be the problem of the concrete foundation. I pray this is the only problem you will EVER have. I would think addressing it now would fall with in 'warranty time allowed' or time frame of usual, anticipated problems. This is your first season of rain, snow, ice, freeze, etc, at this weight of the house, before furniture, appliances, & people add to.the weight... Just my thought; food for thought! You've done such a great job so far! Congratulations! I love the way you put your family above all else. Moving to give them best opportunities, teaching them to work AND to play, appreciation of God & country, family, & of the simple things in life! Thank YOU!

I thought the same thing and wondered what caused the post to sink. It has to be the footer. What's to stop it from sinking further over the years?
@brianthompson9485
@brianthompson9485 Год назад
I fix structures that have sank and settled for a living. With such a light load on that footing and it sinking is alarming. I would have pulled the footing out and installed a helical pier to support the column. A structural engineer should be able to tell you the torque the pier needs to be installed to support the load.

I would not put landscape fabric down. Within 2 or 3 years, the mulch and soil built up in top of the fabric will prevent nutrients from reaching the roots of your trees. Something to think about. I had to pull off a bunch of fabric. It's not an easy job. I would highly recommend just using cardboard and mulch. Or, look into the Bio 360 compostable landscape fabric.

We now use straw (not hay) for the very reason you mentioned and it works well with our drip system, very little evaporation as the straw protects from the sun and heat. We also have used cardboard boxes we broke down in our 3 ft raised garden boxes (we just entered our 60’s so realized we wouldn’t be able to bend or get down and get up easily as we age) as it decomposes well but still keeps weeds from coming through.
@janewalkerhall4311

@@jkp62 WOW... wish I knew how to do this! My veggie garden is 3 x 26 bricked in knee height but it's still a pain to weed while bending over for hours. UGH!
@jkp62
@jkp62 2 года назад
@@janewalkerhall4311 our boxes are 3x6, we have 6 of them. We plant to the outside perimeter of the boxes, run the drip hoses down the middle and place the straw over that and around the plants. We made knee rests all around each box and we wear knee pads. As for the cardboard boxes, every few years after full harvest, the hubby digs out all the soil to mix it up with chicken poop and he puts new boxes down, then puts down the mixed soil in the boxes covers with more boxes and the old straw and let’s it all “bake” over the winter, though we make sure the garlic and onion starts are in for the winter.

Melissa ! I write children stories and poems as a hobby, for my kids and now my 7 Grandkids. When I saw your younger baby girl blowing the Dandelions, it remind me a story of a Prayer Flower. That is really a Dandelion that I wrote. Blow it to the East and Say a prayer for someone you Love. My own Father taught me that he was a gardener, for East las Angelas parks, and was a gardener for many homes in Beverly hills. I grew up in Garden, it was my play ground. And a fig tree with a swing on it, was where my dreams lived. And when enough figs fell I collected them for some Yummy Homemade Jam, 😋 my Mama made . "So seeing your children living a free child's life is beautiful. I had a beautiful childhood and I know your kids will to. And grow up calling you and your husband our Blessing. As they are to you. Great video. So true how we let things build. Aging parents is one of those things. I lost both my parents in 2020. I'm in my late 50's, so I knew these days were coming. Just when I was getting better about my outlook... My wife's father passed this weekend. He had flown into Seattle to see his first great grand daughter and had a massive stroke on the flight... a week later, he is gone. We are all devastated. Saturday we all visited our daughter and our grand daughter and it reminded me that life is not a straight line, but a circle, life does go on. We will get better, but for now, the grieving process. Seeing your video reminded me that the sun will come up tomorrow.

You heard the house creaking and cracking as they lifted it up. I live in California, and an earthquake operates like that except the creaking and crack are greatly magnified. The entire house starts ripping at all the joints -- everywhere. The wave action of the quake transfers to the house -- like pushing a child on a swing with the synchronicity between the push and house ripping.

Good news! The only known poisonous snakes in Idaho are 3 sub-species of the Western Rattlesnake. They all prefer drier, rockier habitat and are confined to southern Idaho and the western edge probably no further north than Moscow. None are known to inhabit even as far north as Coeur d'Alene Lake. That's one worry you can pretty much cross off your list. Now, did they do anything to stabilize the concrete under the post? What's to keep it from settling more?

The area you weeded looked like good place for permaculture design where lay down cardboard and add other plants that appreciate your trees and household, ie simple greens, strawberries, herbs etc. . .

That plum tree has lots of rich, black soil to explore with its root system. We all need space to grow and we all need to be cared for and longed for. As with your lovely orchard, I trust you will also reap fruitful rewards of how you are investing in your lovely family. So glad the structural work went well and without a hitch and your reflections at the close of the vid were so apt. In everything, a metaphor, because life is one continuous episode of learning. Well done.

You guys are so hard on yourselves. You get more done in a day than most days get done in a week or two. I understand that you feel behind however, we see it differently. You work so hard and you do such great jobs. Well done, happy your jobs turned out well.

So glad everything came out alright with the house. So love seeing how the whole family always gets out together to work, eat, and play. These times will always be treasured. The best and cutest part though was the night after eating cheeseburgers,yum, your youngest son just a shaking it dancing. He was absolutely so adorable.

That's awesome 👌, and remember don't forget to use drainage flex lines too add to the bottom of the down spouts. That way there no water pooling underneath the soil by the foundation. take care place is starting to look great and God bless amen.

This same thing happened to me. I was picking figs and was up in the tree. My 1-1/2-year-old daughter was on the ground playing. I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. It was headed for the ground where she was. I just released from the tree and fell to the ground. Picked her up and ran. It had 12 rattlers on it. It was a huge rattlesnake. The people whose the house belonged to made it into a paperweight. It set on the principal desk at the high school for year.

Sorry for the simple questions but im just now getting into the idea of homesteading. 1) if you protected the produce & fruit trees with wire mesh could some goats keep the weeds out of the orchard? 2) why do the horses wear blindfolds?

So happy for you, that the subsiding has been resolved! And: I love all of you - caring for each other, your animals, the land… and crying for a tree. I live within a city, and my neighbors are not too crazy about my 25 years old silver birch… but asking me to trim it severely, is like asking me to euthanize the cat… Btw Melissa, the braided hair looks great on you.
