Great video! However, cel shading is much older than the 1990's. Most animation before computer animation used cel shading for coloring. Think Snow White and the like. The need came from the analogue process of coloring cels. Animation takes a lot of work and duplicating gradients across multiple frames and putting them in motion is incredibly difficult (though some projects, like the film Loving Vincent do just that)
I use to want to be a professional artist but after doing the research all the jobs that professional artist have it’s really stressful career for example, if you were in animation, you have to do deadlines on time consistently and they’re always pressuring you if you work in Hollywood. It’s the same thing if you do commissions as well, I just draw for fun now because I have like an anxiety disorder so I can’t be in a job that is high stress like that.
@@Silustrations yeah I was researching it a lot and most of the jobs are really high stakes and high pressure. If you do manage to get a job, there's a lot of competition now. The job that you get is only temporary until the project is finished, so it's a really unstable career. If you're lucky, a company might keep you on. There's also been like a massive layoffs in the video game industry for artists. And with the animation industry, it's good if you work in the US where there's unions but if you work for smaller companies or in countries like Japan where there isn't a Union, they really take advantage of you. That's why people who work on anime. They're working ridiculous hours like 60 hours or something and they don't even get paid extra. It's almost minimum wage. There's been cases where people even died from like being overworked. I think if you want to have a stable career as an artist you have to become an entrepreneur and like sell your work through some means like your social media starting to company selling merch or teaching. Proko mentioned on his podcast It's really hard to get a career in art. It's really just about luck because some people can get a job and start working right away. And other artists who are even better can spend like decades struggling to just get into the industry.
