Here Is Why Boeing Made A Special Version Of The 707 For Qantas

At Simple Flying, we love our old school aircraft. The Boeing 707 is a classic example. Boeing built 865 of them between 1958 and 1979. Like most aircraft types, there were several variants. But it is a little known quirk of aviation history that Boeing built a 707 variant just for Qantas.

@Brad Williams Volume control is not really relevant. There's both music and narrative at the same time. In order to hear the voice clearly, you have to raise the volume so loud that the music (which sounds like crap anyway) is deafening. Music, if you use it in the background, should be no more than half the volume of the voice. Needless to say, I've placed this channel on my "do not watch" list.

A total of 13 707-138s were built, comprising seven standard models and six 707-138Bs. They were registered from VH-EBA to VH-EBM, and all of the standard models were later converted to 707-138Bs.

Most of the photos show B707 jets equipped with the later JT3D engines. The JT3C was not known for having abundant takeoff thrust, which is why water injection was used. By 1959 Boeing was making the B720, which was a shortened version of the 707, but for _shorter_ range flight.

..Lockheed did experiment with a turboprop version of the Constellation on the military end (the YC 121) using a P&W turboshaft. There was also consideration for a civilian version, the L1249, but the project was cancelled. There was also a constellation which was refitted with Allison 501 turboprops for development of the L-188 Electra. All turboprop versions of the Constellation were scrapped.

The Comet was the first practical jet airliner, not the 707, and the first practical jet aircraft was a lot earlier and smaller. Yes there was a design flaw which was corrected, but that didn't make the Comet impractical. It just made the Comet a commercial failure. I've also never heard anyone call Qantas "QEA", just like nobody calls it QAL now. The first international flight I ever flew on was a Qantas 707 from Sydney to Auckland just before the type was retired and used by the air force as tankers.
@pierodavies9508
@pierodavies9508 4 года назад
Have to agree with you. I was quite surprised at this omission. Only flew twice on one (across the Tasman and return) which will stay with me forever. Unfortunately, never on a Comet (which my Father helped build back in Hatfield. He was a sheet metal worker, and helped skin those massive wings! She, (Comet), was a masterpiece with lines that have never been eclipsed.

@@pierodavies9508 we were supposed to fly on the first Air New Zealand DC10 but missed the flight and ended up on the Qantas 707. The return flight was an Air New Zealand DC8, so it was the only time I ever flew on those jets. It's a shame that Boeing got to take advantage of the lessons learned from the Comet, but the UK lost sales.

@@theharper1 Never managed a DC10 and it would not have been a choice either, as I seem to remember a bit of doubt as to their ability to stay airborne. My memory may have been unkind to it? Yes, it was pretty rough on De Havilland. A close (very) 2nd in the good looks department for me, was the VC10. I had a great Airfix kit that I made up, which even had cabin lighting via the magic of optical plastic piping (not quite fibre optics), but in truth, essentially, it was over for the British Aircraft Industry by then. More's the pity.
@theharper1
@theharper1 4 года назад
@@pierodavies9508 the kit sounds great! I saw a VC10 in London at the RAF museum. I flew the DC10 from Fiji to New Caledonia, and the MD11 domestically in the USA. Much less claustrophobic than smaller jets with the high ceilings and large diameter fuselage. Another British aircraft I flew on was the HS748 in Fiji on that same trip as the DC10.

Qantas has never been called "QEA". Lol. My parents were frequent Qantas (first class) flyers. I still have a postcard from 1959 when my parents first flew the 707 around the world. There is one reference on the postcard to "Qantas Empire Airways", five references to "Qantas", and zero references to "QEA" (lol). Neither my parents, nor anyone I heard, ever referred to the airline as anything but Qantas.

I was curious also. Glad to see replies naming it as a spare engine. Yes, this method to carry a spare engine was in fact developed using a Quantas 707-138. A special fairing was developed. The early 747s also had this option, as back then few if any aircraft could load this wide/tall engine as cargo, and it was a while before 747 freighters were operated. A very few other airliners had this capacity.

@calvinnickel9995
@calvinnickel9995 4 года назад
The Comets windows weren’t really any more square than pressurized airliners like the DC-6 or Convair 340 or even jets like the DC-8. The square windows were an easy way to explain to laymen the Comet’s flaws. The only aircraft where the direct cause of the crash was found was G-ALYP.. and the crack originated from a hole for the ADF antenna where rivet holes were punched instead of drilled which created micro cracks which eventually grew and united. G-ALYU underwent static testing and while the fuselage did fail adjacent to a window, the greater failure extends to a fuselage lap joint. The root cause was the use of aluminum only 0.032 inches thick. While this was sufficient to hold more than double the pressure, aluminum fatigue was not understood. Unlike steel aluminum fatigues with any cyclical force no matter how low. The thin skin simply fatigued too quickly.. and lost strength until it could no longer hold the pressurization forces. It failed at openings like any fuselage would because any opening makes it weaker. Subsequent airliners would use 0.125 inch skins with fail safes designed to stop tears and depressurize the aircraft before it exploded. Unfortunate this worked almost too well when Aloha 243 lost its entire roof. Subsequent comets used thicker skins. The oval windows were literal window dressing that would dominate British and European airliners for decades in comparison to the far more square windows on American airliners.

BTW, this wasn’t built especially for Qantas and the 120 designation was simply 100 with the Boeing in house customer code of 20. The aeroplanes were re engined with fan jets instead of the turbojets originally fitted. Either the 7th or 8th aircraft onward were delivered as 138B with the others being re engines by Boeing bringing them from 138 to 138B. The other element is that these aircraft slots on the production line were originally KC-135 slots that were canceled which is why they were shorter and why Qantas got the 707 before everyone else outside the US. That was the real reason for then being different because Qantas wanted them before everyone else and that was the only way to get them early. This they were shorter because of that but had the normal 707 cabin width.

The very first jet I ever flew on was one of Qantas' B707-138s. Off all the Boeing 7x7 types, the 717 and 757 are the only two I've yet to fly on.

@@flybyairplane3528 from a pilots POV, was there much difference between a 707 and a 720? I have my PPL (nil endorsements) and retiring medically will break my heart.

So did Qantas and British Airways build their special version of the 747-400?

How much do you earn, that a London - Sydney ticket is on weeks wage ( I'd rather say it's a wage of one month)

Great video and cool to see an airplane I flew over the Atlantic as a kid. So Quanta flew the 707 internationally before the first clients Air France, Lufthansa, and Sabena?

VH-EBA (now VH-XBA) was the 29th 707 off the production line and arrived in Sydney at the end of its delivery flight on July 2, 1959. It was the first jet airliner Boeing ever sold to a foreign airline. Considering that only 28 aircraft came off the production line before VH-EBA, that doesn't leave much room for any prior deliveries to Air France, Lufthansa, Sabena, and the others.
